How do you open velux windows?

Sounds like a stupid question I know...

We live in a penthouse apartment with bloody high ceilings. Our bedroom has 2 velux windows in. For scale, our wardrobe is 2.5meters high and still has space above it. The ceiling slopes as we are in the roof.

We were told by a neighbour when we bought the place years ago that the velux windows are electronic and require a remote so we never bothered.

We noticed new NDN has his open. He's a tenant and we've never seen them open before.

So, anyone know how to open them without breaking them?

Sorry posted too soon - we have tried to open them with a window pole and they are stuck fast. DH says we should just leave it - if we get them open and it breaks or leaks we'll be so cross we bothered.

perhaps you could get a spare remote here, or find out if you can do it manually as well as electric www.velux.co.uk/products/roof-windows/integra

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:22

I'm not convinced at all that they are on a remote. Not even sure where we'd fine out. Surely there would be a panel for the wibndows somewhere like an alarm panel.

Ask your neighbour? Grin

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:27

Espresso Nope. It was a repossession and we had to buy gate and door entry fobs as well as replace the front door. Sounds like you know what you're talking about... But we can't get the bloody things open to start with without fear of it being ripped off!

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:27

MakeItRain I am sorely tempted to. We saw his window open walking home last night and I was quite indignant that he had open! Would it sound like a weird thing to ask?

We have got several tall veluxes and I have a pole. I opened one the other day that hasnt (needed to be!) opened since it was installed over 2 years ago. I had a heck of a job and really thought it was stuck, but it eventually gave and is okay now. I think they do stick quite a bit after being shut for so long. Probably doesn't help, but I know how it feels when you are gasping for a bit of breeze.

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:30

Lucisky I could probably hang off this bloody pole attached to the window!

We have a pole thingy for ours but we find the bar bit sticks. So we use the pole to open that slghtly but then have to hook over the bar on the frame and give a hard pull.
Dont know if that will help you !

AiryFairy1 · 29/06/2018 15:34

Absolutely ask the neighbour!

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:37

Ours wasn't a Velux window pole that we have flapjack It was one that had like an S shape on it's side at the top.

Will knock and ask neighbour.

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 29/06/2018 15:37

Just ask them how they open. Ours just pull open at an angle no posh remote windows here but we have a pole Grin

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:38

Surely though, if it was remote, we'd see some kind of panel - like an alarm panel - to control them?

OP posts:
Wilma55 · 29/06/2018 15:39

If it has a remote controlled one there will be a switch somewhere like a light switch.

MrsJayy · 29/06/2018 15:41

Ours pulls in the way try that, you are right though you would probabl see some sort of control panel

Deux · 29/06/2018 15:42

If you go on to the velux website you can search for an approved installer locally and get them round to check it out/get it open if you don’t get anywhere with your neighbour. You’ll have to pay though.

You can manually open the electric ones. Tricky when they’re so high. If your neighbours are electric then yours mostly likely are too.

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:44

Wilma55 We have 4 lights in our bedroom - pretty certain we don't know what one of them does.... Bet that's it.

I think it's time to ask the neighbour....!

OP posts:
Deux · 29/06/2018 15:46

Ours just have remotes, not control panel. But they will be wired in somewhere. Do you have switches in the kitchen where the dishwasher etc are on fused spurs? Might be there? Or have a look at your fuse board.

"Lucisky I could probably hang off this bloody pole attached to the window!"

You would be unreasonable to do that if you don't have someone take a photo of it to share with us. Halo

MakeItRain · 29/06/2018 15:47

Good luck with the neighbour! I don't think it's weird at all to ask. Smile

CornishMaid1 · 29/06/2018 15:52

Just ask the neighbour.

I am not sure on the remote controlled ones, as we just went for 'normal' ones. We have the specific Velux pole and even with that they are really stiff to open and you have to pull it a certain way or they don't open. I usually make DH do it as I am always worried I am just going to break them.

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 15:58

You would be unreasonable to do that if you don't have someone take a photo of it to share with us. Halo I can quite positively say DH would not oblige. He thinks I'm accident prone as it is, let alone swinging off a pole attached to the window. I;d probably pull the sky down into our bedroom or something!

Those that have opening veluxes, how do you ensure they're properly closed? I don't want to wake up in a rain shower if we do manage to open them and this Saharan weather ever stops enough for British weather

OP posts:
Deux · 29/06/2018 16:00

The electric ones have a rain sensor. When the sensor gets wet they automatically close. Freaks out visitors.

cjt110 · 29/06/2018 16:14

Deux That's very swish. Our house is full of modern shit. The light switches do different things depending if it's a short press or a long press. They don't stay in the position you pressed them in either and are sprung loaded.

We have a light in the hall on a sensor that comes on when you walk through.

We have an integrated stereo point... All modern shit
