To think that people in Greece seem sad and subdued?

I am on holiday in Rhodes. We normally go to Spain or Tenerife and I've not been to Greece since about 1998. It has struck me how downtrodden and submissive the staff are at the resort we are staying in. It has made me sad and I think it must be the result of the state the economy is in.

Has anyone else noticed this? I texted my bf in U.K. about it as he went to Greece a few weeks ago and he said 'well they just live a simple life' which annoyed me because it seems awfully patronising and suggestive of the fact that it doesn't matter because they're 'only' Greek people.

Last time I was in Greece we went to a bar where they comped you drinks for not being English. As Scots we were happy with that deal.

Went to Rhodes a couple of years ago, everyone was really friendly.

'Went to Rhodes a couple of years ago, everyone was really friendly.'

I have nowhere said that people aren't friendly - that isn't my point at all.

Op, I went to Rhodes last year and in two taxis, the drivers talking about the difficulties they were having. I don't know if it was specific to Rhodes.

They said that there weren't many full time jobs for people and those who did have full time jobs were very lucky. They also said that there were no good jobs for young people (eg graduates) and so they were all moving abroad. The driver said something like 40,000 had left in their a certain period of time.

@OutofTyme well not subdued then is what I meant, my description was meant to say that whatever it was that you were saying was not the case for me!

9amTrain · 29/06/2018 22:19

**whatever it was that you experienced

And I would argue that people being "downtrodden" and "submissive" would not exactly be viewed as friendly by tourists...
