To think that people in Greece seem sad and subdued?

I am on holiday in Rhodes. We normally go to Spain or Tenerife and I've not been to Greece since about 1998. It has struck me how downtrodden and submissive the staff are at the resort we are staying in. It has made me sad and I think it must be the result of the state the economy is in.

Has anyone else noticed this? I texted my bf in U.K. about it as he went to Greece a few weeks ago and he said 'well they just live a simple life' which annoyed me because it seems awfully patronising and suggestive of the fact that it doesn't matter because they're 'only' Greek people.

I'm not arguing. I initially asked since when had Cypriots hated the English and you responded that it was when we sold them out to the Turks. I'm just stating the facts. Cyprus gained independence from us in 1960. Turkey invaded in 74. It seems your landlord, from what you've said, has confirmed that for Cypriots, any ill feeling is towards Turks and not Brits.

CrabbyJo · 29/06/2018 11:00

I'm not patronising lol. I'm basing my responses on your statements and the actual facts.

missyB1 · 29/06/2018 11:04

We’ve been to lots of Greek islands and are off to Crete next week. We got to Greece a lot because we find the locals so polite friendly and helpful, we feel welcome there.

We tried France a few time but encountered such a frosty and “couldn’t care less” attitude every time that we’ve given up on France now, can’t be doing with it.

If I'm thinking about the right programme, one of the women married a guy we know in Zante, we go to a different resort now because my parents built a house but they were definitely happily married for a very long time. (My sister worked for him and knew the couple well)

lastnightidreamtofpotatoes · 29/06/2018 12:00

Ooh what was his name?

Winegal · 29/06/2018 12:07

His name was Dennis (I know that doesn't sound like a very Greek name but it's a form of st dionysis, the patron saint of the island so is a very popular name there)

lastnightidreamtofpotatoes · 29/06/2018 12:19

Yes! Denis was married to Suzy! She actually seemed the least happy of the women, so glad to hear they are still going strong.

Pa1oma · 29/06/2018 12:33

Op, sorry but just because you’re in a resort where the staff seem a bit miffed, you can’t possibly extrapolate that the “people of Greece seem sad and subdued.” Grin. Do you always make such generalisations? Maybe they’re understaffed or having an argument? You could be staying in a hotel in Britain with low staff morale for whatever reason - meanwhile, down the road, people are having a whale of a time Confused.

OutofTyme · 29/06/2018 12:51

They don't seem miffed. They look exhausted and sad. Maybe it is the hotel but my point originally was that I don't remember Rhodes being like this in the 90s

" I'm basing my responses on your statements and the actual facts."

you seem to be basing your responses on the fact that your 'partner' is Greek Cypriot. That is a bit like me pretending to understand Irish politics and society on the basis that I once shagged an Irish person..:)

Winegal · 29/06/2018 13:38

Well they were as of around 5 years ago, she seemed quite happy, she didn't like the late nights though (he owned a lovely bar that stayed open really late every night). Small world eh!

CrabbyJo · 29/06/2018 13:59

My partner is British actually. I said his family are Greek Cypriots. You in turn seem to be basing your opinions on your, erm, landlord?!
You made a sweeping statement that Greek Cypriots hate the English. You based that on you wrongfully being under the impression that the British had something to do with Turkey invading Cyprus. Forgive me for stating facts and challenging your false statement that Cypriots hate English people.

PumpkinReader · 29/06/2018 15:30

Yep, been to Greece recently.

People so friendly and seemingly genuine, one of the main highlights. Its hard to know OP re. your submissiveness point, its possible of course (worried about Tripadvisor reviews, etc).

But poor infrastructure, often dirty and run-down, I was occasionally shocked by rubbish etc. England really did look like a green and pleasant and cared-for land on return.

Yes, Greece beautiful sometimes, free, but ....

bruffin · 29/06/2018 15:38

My DF was greek cypriot Well said Crabbyjo

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/06/2018 15:42

Crabby, it was just an anecdote...I am hardly basing my knowledge and opinions on it.
it's a 'forum'....
Did you choose your username based on your personality?

CrabbyJo · 29/06/2018 15:57

You think it's an anecdote to state that Greek Cypriots HATE the English?
Do you make such sweeping offensive statements about any other countries and their people? Based purely on your "landlord", which I'm sure you now must realise that you misunderstood what he meant. I'm not crabby at all, it's almost amusing that you can't admit that you flippantly made a statement that was offensive to not only Greek Cypriots but also to Brits and completely inaccurate.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/06/2018 16:01

Christ, Crabby - did you even read my post which was about my landlord and the 'Muslim hordes', (not about him hating the Brits).

(Which an awful lot of people do, btw, from ex colonies, just that many brits fail to notice)

I know it's hot but there is no need for an argument. Chill out fgs.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 29/06/2018 16:17

I'm an actual Greek Cypriot. I'm cool with the British, and Muslims.

Not down with scientologists though. But that's a personal feud not a national one

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/06/2018 16:19

I am glad to hear that Alonso x
Not too keen on the Scientologists myself tbh.

CrabbyJo · 29/06/2018 16:22

Yes I read it. I also read your post which said Greek Cypriots hate English!?!
When I challenged that you based it on your Greek Cypriot landlord.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/06/2018 16:24

no Crabby I didn't. that was about him hating the Turks.
I really cannot be bothered to discuss this any more as you are obviously crabby, over heated, and lacking in comprehension skills.
It is just a forum, where people chat.
Have a great weekend.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/06/2018 16:26

oh I shagged an Irish bloke once - that means I have a full understanding of Irish politics, the Good Friday Agreement, and what all Irish people think of the English..:)

CrabbyJo · 29/06/2018 16:29

So out of interest, where did your view that Greek Cypriots hate English come from?

CrabbyJo · 29/06/2018 16:30

You keep mentioning this Irish shag, must have been a particularly good shag as that's all you come back with?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/06/2018 16:31

Grin OKOK I never shagged an Irish guy, I admit.

It's just chit chat, honestly, ex colonies and all.
