DH’s work - who is BU?

My DH works in an office, not customer facing. He has been wearing tailored shorts with a short sleeved shirt for work this week. Today he was told he’s not allowed as it’s against the company dress code. He’s checked said dress code and it says “wear clothes appropriate for your role”. Women are allowed to wear dresses/skirts. Is he BU to not understand the issue?

EveningHare · 28/06/2018 21:02

shesthecatsmother · 28/06/2018 21:03

Definitely tell him to wear a skirt! Grin

IGiorni · 28/06/2018 21:06

I actually think he would do that Grin

Shorts wouldn't usually be classed as appropriate office clothing for women either.

TroubledLichen · 28/06/2018 21:11

Yes to the skirt tomorrow to make a point!

But I’ve worked in many an office and even those with business casual codes/dress down Fridays would consider shorts, on men or women, inappropriate for work.

ReadingRiot · 28/06/2018 21:12

One man in our office is currently wearing a suit with sandals. The dress code doesn't allow shorts but does allow skirts and sandals so he's making a stand. I think he'd wear the skirt if his wife had one that fit!

I dont see how the male version is any less smart. Both of these would be fine in an office with a smart/casual dresscode.

Does he have a female colleague he is closer too he can ask her to wear smart shorts and see if the response is the same?

Neither of those would be permissible in most UK offices NapQueen, but although we did have a discussion today about when a cullotte becomes a short Grin

WearyAlready · 28/06/2018 21:31

I think tailored/city shorts are perfectly acceptable for either m or f (unless you work somewhere which has H&S considerations, obviously).

Shoes are the tricky element for blokes, though. Sandals or boat shoes/loafers are fine. Sandals or boat shoes/loafers with socks are NOT FINE.

Unfortunately, at the risk of generalising wildly, men tend not to take such good care of their feet as women do in terms of rough skin, keeping toenails short and tidy etc, and being subjected to horrible naked feet in a working environment can be grim.

infrequentposter88 · 28/06/2018 21:34

It does bamboozle me that even in non-customer-facing roles most work places wouldn't allow shorts.

That said it is a fairly standard office dress-code rule, so until the workers unite and realise we have nothing to lose but our long trousers he'll just need to put up with it.

When I went on holiday to Australia, which admittedly was over 20 years ago, it astonished me to see men in business suits with formal shorts made of the same material as the jacket. They mostly seemed to wear them with knee length socks though so there was just a couple of inches of bare knee. I wonder if they still do that over there?

Ellendegeneres · 28/06/2018 21:36

I think men in tailored shorts look smart- smart and hot. I don’t get their issue with a short sleeved shirt.

Skirt, definitely a skirt.

I'm a teacher and the disparity between men and women in this weather is outrageous. A suit is easier to throw on every day but they are WARM. Meanwhile women are strolling around in skirts and a loose blouse.

cariadlet · 28/06/2018 21:37

I teach in a primary school on the South coast. We had an email today to say that because of the heat wave male members of staff will be allowed to wear shorts.

I have to admit that I'll probably think it looks a bit odd, but it does seem fair when us women have been able to keep comparatively cool in summer dresses.

ALemonyPea · 28/06/2018 21:39

I used to work in a office where shorts were not allowed, but the med didn’t have to wear ties when the weather was too hot. Ridiculous rule, always felt sorry for the men.

Papergirl, there is a little old man who lives local who is sporting a suit jacket and matching shorts and hat this week. I see him every day out for his daily walk. Makes me smile.

Topseyt · 28/06/2018 21:40

While shorts are not generally accepted in most formal UK office settings, I do think that some of the more tailored ones such as chinos should be.

There are some fairly dressy styles of culottes that women can get away with in warm weather, but the required men's clothing of shirt and trousers strikes me as very impractical and uncomfortable when it is hot, even with short sleeved shirts.

PatchworkGirl · 28/06/2018 21:40

Has he finished off the outfit with socks and sandals?

They are obviously being ridiculous. I'd be encouraging him to wear a skirt too.

RollaCola84 · 28/06/2018 21:40

Definitely suggest he wear a skirt !!! I've never understood why it's ok for women to wear knee length skirts or dresses with bare legs but not for guys to wear similar length smart shorts. I don't like wearing skirts or dresses and was sorely tempted to wear shorts to work yesterday but suspect it would be frowned upon

RB68 · 28/06/2018 21:41

I think smart shorts fine for men and women end of

Maybe just go for salwar chemise ....

Nanny0gg · 28/06/2018 21:41

What is he wearing on his feet?

OnionShite · 28/06/2018 21:44

Yeah, put him in one of your dresses. His work are being dickbags. Most of the time men have it easier than women wrt formal work dress, because suits are more neutral than anything we have on offer, but whenever it gets hot they are at a distinct disadvantage.

Nancydrawn · 28/06/2018 21:45

@Papergirl, it's the hot thing in the NBA! But you kind of need to built like LeBron...

Look for another job where is likes the dress code and tell them why when he resigns.... we're all t shirts, shorts and flip flops (hi-tech industry).
