DH’s work - who is BU?

IGiorni · 28/06/2018 21:01

My DH works in an office, not customer facing. He has been wearing tailored shorts with a short sleeved shirt for work this week. Today he was told he’s not allowed as it’s against the company dress code. He’s checked said dress code and it says “wear clothes appropriate for your role”. Women are allowed to wear dresses/skirts. Is he BU to not understand the issue?

Ive never understood the whole uniform smart suit thing when your not meeting a client/customer. Surely your staff being comfy would make them work more. I get to wear whatever I want be that a skimpy dress and heels (heels not so appropriate so I would wear flip flops) or jeans with a tshirt and trainers.

Just keep something smart and formal to change into should you have a client come in.

Get him to wear a skirt. All the school boys are doing it where their schools don’t allow shorts but do skirts.

KitchenFloor · 28/06/2018 21:48

When we last had a heatwave a man arriving in shorts resulted in a sudden change to our dress code specifically banning shorts for men and sandals for men.

Bobbybear10 · 28/06/2018 21:51

I really think he should go in with a skirt in if you have one that fits!

His work is being utterly unreasonable.

I think it depends on the environment. Fairly formal office environment - "Standard" business wear is not shorts, tailored or otherwise. It's just not (whether that's justified or not). But it's only in recent years that women have been allowed to go bare legged. I'm 20years into my career now and I'd say it's only in this type of massively warm weather that it's acceptable not to wear tights. My friend was sent to HR about 15 years ago in warm weather for wearing a dress without tights.

Madness!!

Fluffybat · 28/06/2018 21:54

This rule drives me crazy!!! Tailored shorts look so smart. It's a bloody heatwave he should be allowed to dress accordingly. I'm a teacher and my school says women (and men) can't wear shorts.... but they're fine with mini skirts. It baffles me. I once wore knee length tailored shorts and was told it was against uniform policy but my colleague was wearing a short dress which showed her knickers went she bent over and that was fine...

Get your DH to wear a skirt.

WeAllHaveWings · 28/06/2018 22:00

Our office bans open toe shoes, trainers, blue jeans, and heels > 1". No one wears ties, very few suit jackets, it's smart casual. smart taliored shorts are allowed, but noone wears them ever.

suzy2b · 28/06/2018 22:01

Other country's let men wear shorts in hot weather i lived in sweden over 30yrs ago and saw a lot of men wearing shorts in the summer

Papergirl1968 · 28/06/2018 22:08

You definitely need to be able to carry off the look - or be old enough to simply not care.
I went to Specsavers today and the staff were mainly wearing various bits of England kit with a couple of men in shorts. Still working hard, polite, professional etc.

aliasjoey · 28/06/2018 22:11

I always find it odd watching Rita and the (Danish) headmaster is in shorts.

Especially because he usually wears them with a jumper. Rita herself wears skintight jeans and smokes outside the school front door. Hjordis wears the most peculiar sackcloth dresses.

I think Rita’s youngest son also wears shorts to school... At my DDs 6th form, kids have to wear a suit!

Alicatz66 · 28/06/2018 22:12

No problem with the shorts ... but short sleeved shirts are grim ... ban them !

jay55 · 28/06/2018 22:14

Some men are wearing shorts in work this week and they don't look smart, due to footwear I think. They look like they're at the airport for a lads holiday.

cherish123 · 28/06/2018 22:24

I would imagine short sleeved shirt is ok. It's probably the shorts they have an issue with. It's quite common to consider this not acceptable work attire. I often wear shorts but I would not wear them to work.

Maelstrop · 28/06/2018 22:28

When I was slim, I wore tailored shorts, thick black tights and boots. Rocking look! I’m a teacher, no-one said a word.

Tillytrotter123 · 28/06/2018 22:31

My office is exactly the same. Us women can wear light summer dressed, skirts etc and the men have to wear trousers, we work in a call centre! Tailored shorts can look very smart. I think the pp had a good idea, see if he could find a female colleague who would wear shorts and see what they say.

NotTheQueen · 28/06/2018 22:31

@Papergirl1968
When I went on holiday to Australia, which admittedly was over 20 years ago, it astonished me to see men in business suits with formal shorts made of the same material as the jacket. They mostly seemed to wear them with knee length socks though so there was just a couple of inches of bare knee. I wonder if they still do that over there

Walk shorts are beloved by older male teacher types down under. They’re horrific visually but practical

It's not women telling men what to wear in hot weather though. I don't mind if men wear trousers, smart shorts or skirts, but I won't have it if they start saying women should stop wearing weather appropriate clothes for the summer I will get cross.

JessicaJonesJacket · 28/06/2018 22:42

I've never worked in an office where shorts were acceptable for men or women.

Papergirl1968 · 28/06/2018 22:42

Lol, Queen
There’s an article in the Mail online about whether flip flops are appropriate office wear. I don’t think they are but that sandals are ok with groomed feet.

IGiorni · 28/06/2018 22:42

He’s got this kind of look going on (that’s not him btw!). He doesn’t have to wear a tie so not overly formal. The IT guys wear jeans and t-shirts apparently and some women have been wearing vest tops/ summer dresses (as opposed to more formal summer clothes) and sandals. Double standards I think. He’s tempted to rock up in a dress tomorrow! Grin

We had an email today to say that because of the heat wave male members of staff will be allowed to wear shorts.

All good as long as they’re long enough not to show any male members. Grin

Alicatz66 · 28/06/2018 22:47

Why not just get on with it !! Men have worn suits for work for years ... he probably has no problem with it ... or is he whining on Dadsnet ?? Very much doubt it .. everyone who is encouraging him to wear a skirt .. are your husbands and partners happy to do this ? ... for goodness sake, get a grip .. it will be pissing it down in a couple of weeks and you can all put your cardis and slacks back on and moan about the cold instead

Alicatz66 · 28/06/2018 22:48

Looking forward to all your photos of your other halves at work tomorrow in dresses and skirts ........

tombstoneteeth · 28/06/2018 22:49

It's completely normal for men to wear smart shorts in NZ, even in formal situations. Why not?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 28/06/2018 22:50

How ridiculous! Sounds like far too mang dress codes are totally lacking in common sense. If it’s 32 degrees let your staff wear shorts! How are shorts any different to skirts anyway? I don’t get it?

smithsinarazz · 28/06/2018 22:51

Get him to identify as a woman tomorrow :D :D :D
