Just had a call to the landline. Kids answered. Guy wants to speak to a Mr xx who has never lived here. We have lived here for 10 years. Knew previous and only other owner ( not mr xx ).
I say to call centre guy ' sorry Mr X does not live here and has never lived here. We are registered with the telephone pref service so please remove this number' guy gets angry with me - i can hear it is a call centre in the background. Guy is shouting that I am a liar and mr xx lives here and that i am rude. I hang up. He keeps phoning. 3 times in a row, a gap then again. I did 1471 and got the number ( wales ) but it does not accept incoming calls as i was going to report. What do i do now?

On my handset for my landline I can blacklist numbers. Then if the person rings back, it connects and my phone flashes but doesn't ring out. It's in the settings menu on the handset, not the base. I couldn't figure out how to block numbers (for free!) so this is the next best thing.

If I get a cold call that has a number I generally look it up on 'who phoned me' or 'who called me' Once I know its only marketing I save the number and enter the name as SPAM. Next time they ring I know I can ignore it.

when answering these calls just say I don't buy anything over the phone thank you

Another vote for the BT call block phone. Not had a nuisance call since we got them 12 months ago, but reading some of the replies on this thread is making me want to plug in a basic phone so I can have some fun. Smile

BT call blocker is good, we don’t get rubbish calls. In our previous area we used to get the “Microsoft’ Indian scam ones all the time, twice a day once.

Sounds like a debt collector, but still should not be rude

I had a similar experience with some selling double glazing. He called me a liar when I said we'd just had it done (we had). I put the phone down and he called back saying in a scary voice 'did you just put the phone down? How dare you!' And we're on the TPS list.

We have so many unwanted calls too. Either leave it to ring and go to answer, or answer with "Hello police station, how can I help you?"

Magpiemagpie · 28/06/2018 22:00

Sing them the Lionel Ritchie Song Hello

Hello is it me your looking for
Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely
Or is someone loving you
Tell me how to win your heart
Cos I haven’t got a clue
But let me start by saying I love you

Magpiemagpie · 28/06/2018 22:01

I have this song on my phone as my answer message
Really freaks people out 😂

ToadsforJustice · 28/06/2018 22:09

I always say I would love to speak to them but they need to answer a few security questions first.

"Can I have the second and fourth number of your pin?"
"Please confirm your mother's maiden name"
"If you were a biscuit, what would be?"

To be fair, I rarely get past the first question before they put the phone down.

MissEliza · 28/06/2018 22:28

Blue I'm actually going to use that!

Lilyhatesjaz · 28/06/2018 22:35

5 points if you can get them to hang up. 10 points if you can get them to swear at you first.

Angie169 · 28/06/2018 22:53

I very rarely answer my land line unless it is rang in a certain way ( think ring for 2 seconds hang up and ring back ) that I know its someone I want to talk to , its a bit of a faff for the person calling but we all do it for each other so it works for us ,

If you do pick up and its him again either in a very robotic voice
" please be aware all of our calls are recorded for training due to harassment issues "

or

" ooohh you have just caught me in the middle of something "
put the receiver down without hanging up then
" oh yes yes yes harder " or "oh god he is going to do it , ooo no he is not , ah maybe he is . " , Get kids dh to join in ,.

or
pretend you can not hear him , " hello ,, helloo ? is there anyone there ?

One note of caution on the blocker phones, I've heard Hospital switchboards aren't getting through as they call from a multi system not one line so can't be added to the safe list - it's been an issue for some older patients who only use their landline or post, they are missing urgent information or being called to come in at short notice as the call gets blocked by the over zealous system.

Might just be my area's hospital phone system, or one type of blocker phone, so may not be widespread.

I've called these phones plenty of times from hospital switchboards and it works exactly the same as any number not in their contacts - you just say who you are and they decide whether to answer. Some people block withheld or private numbers which the switchboard comes up as. In this case you call switchboard and ask them to put you through without withholding the number.
