Just had a call to the landline. Kids answered. Guy wants to speak to a Mr xx who has never lived here. We have lived here for 10 years. Knew previous and only other owner ( not mr xx ).
I say to call centre guy ' sorry Mr X does not live here and has never lived here. We are registered with the telephone pref service so please remove this number' guy gets angry with me - i can hear it is a call centre in the background. Guy is shouting that I am a liar and mr xx lives here and that i am rude. I hang up. He keeps phoning. 3 times in a row, a gap then again. I did 1471 and got the number ( wales ) but it does not accept incoming calls as i was going to report. What do i do now?

Don't plead with them or keep repeating anything. Say it firmly once and just put the phone down. No niceties, not even goodbye. No need to be polite to them at all.

'BT fraud line, how may I help you?'
'Metropolitan police vice squad - may I have your location please?'

Just use who-called.co.uk/ put the number in the search box and you'll no doubt see that it's a scam

I like the Saucy Sarah option :)

I find picking up, saying nothing and then just setting the handset down next to the phone and walking away soon gets them bored

I ask them to complete a quick security check and tell them the call is being recorded for training and monitoring purposes. Funnily they are never to keen to give me their full name, DOB, first line of their address and postcode before I speak to them...

Rubyslippers7780 · 28/06/2018 16:28

Have reported the number.. hopefully that's it now but will definitely try being Sexy Sarah if anyone else phones!! We are registered with the tps so don't normally get these calls...infact about 3 people have our landline number so it never rings!!

Best one of these I ever had was someone asking to speak to Mr Gubbins. My dog has a human named. Lots of fun - he’s outrside chewing his bone....

If it is the same number all the time can you block it? Either in your handset or with your landline provider (with BT you can sign into you account and see calls received and block of you want)

ScarlettSahara · 28/06/2018 16:37

I am registered with TPS but unfortunately when I tried to report repeated calls from a call centre they wanted the name of the company, not just the phone number. I am now using BT 1572 (free at the moment) which I use to block unwanted calls & has reduced the number of calls but that does not help with number unavailable or witheld calls. The call blocker phones sound good.

Topseyt · 28/06/2018 16:39

The TPS can only act on calls that originate from within the UK.

If it originates from abroad then it can still get through (e.g. call centres in the Far East).

ScarlettSahara · 28/06/2018 16:40

Ah cross-posted Ruby - so TPS only required the phone number or did you report it somewhere else?

ScarlettSahara · 28/06/2018 16:41

Oh yes what Topseyt said too.

Sorry for double post!

TheLionRoars1110 · 28/06/2018 16:45

Answer and don't say anything. He'll get frustrated but he can't do anything. Only works if you're not expecting an urgent call I guess

Oldraver · 28/06/2018 16:51

We got a call blocker phone and it's been brilliant. OH works nights and I had to resort to unplugging the phone during the day.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/06/2018 16:52

Put on a delighted voice and tell them "I'm soooo happy you phoned back, I want to tell you about Jesus"

I can't claim credit for this as I got the idea off here, but trust me - it works every time Grin

You can also report to the information commissioner on line as well as tps. They ask for the company name if you have it but my.ver will do.
