to think primary school uniform price is ridiculous?!

I'm new here but just wanting some perspective.

My dc's school has just updated the uniform policy, I've always thought it was expensive but now its getting a little silly.

Logo school jumpers £17.25 + each
Girls M&S Summer dresses £12+ each
The boys summer shirts £12 + each

On top of that they need

Logo PE tshirt £8.50
Logo PE hoodie £ £13.50
Specific PE Socks £ 5.50

This is without thiings like shoes, shirts, pinafores coats and backpacks, Logo PE bags, Hi-Viz.
Plus an Optional blazer at £30.

Is it unreasonable of me to think spending £200+ on one child a year on primary school uniform is ridiculous?
I always knew secondary schools were expensive but that's over £1300 for 6 years of primary school.
That could buy a car!
AIBU or is it getting a bit silly now?!

IME (as a child and as a parent) of countries with no uniform, there is absolutely no issue around competition and branding. My DC, like the rest of their teenaged friends, dress for comfort in jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. As I used to.

None of the prices you’ve quoted in the original post seem that high to me.
As for a spare £200 to spend on uniform each August, you know it’s coming right? So you could budget £15/£20 a month all year

Why would any child need 5 sets of uniform?
because their parent like to have a full week of clothes available not to worry about laundry Grin

I have been in non-uniform schools too, it's great if you are not poor.

When one of our DC attended a school with a dress code (not even uniform), the clothes budget overall was much higher than now.

Why would any child need 5 sets of uniform? Because it’s easy, both work Ft
Wash and hang up week worth uniform, and the nursery clothes too.all sorted. Easy
I lay out my week worth clothes in advance too

user1499173618 · 29/06/2018 14:06

Easy for the parents, tough on the planet.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 29/06/2018 14:09

Yes tealover, you're spot on,other items are available cheaper in supermarket
School has chose not to enable that option.£5.50 for pair of socks is unreasonable when it’s £2 in primark

TeaLover2468 · 29/06/2018 15:22

@Oly5 I do try and budget money every month for various things however sometimes things go wrong and I have to start from scratch. I guess my real point is I feel every School should offer fair priced uniform really.

And as people keep saying yes I understand children cost money I always make sure to pay for trips and attend events that I can around work. Also people keep saying uniform is cheaper than casual clothes which I disagree with.
I can go into primark and buy a kids outfit for about £6 half the price of a summer dress or shirt Hmm

It’s the restricted choice and obligation pricier item to buy from prescribed store
The free choice to buy items, cheaper, elsewhere has been removed
As op said similar items in primark but there are not allowed to purchase non approved items
