To think 8:30am is too early...

To be mowing the lawn and trimming hedges.

What a bloody racket, and it's still going (but it's now past 9am so socially I think that's a little more acceptable...)

If 8.30 is too early some people must be a bit lazy in terms of lie ins! IN the real world most parents are up around 6, getting ready for work around 6.30 - 7, children's breakfasts, school runs, child minder trip , rush to nursery etc. 8.3-0 is lie abed time surely

I have mowed grass at 8.30. i usually wait until 9am on the dot however. If the neighbours are n't up by then then they are very lucky and rich and entitled and they deserve the wake up call.

Hoppinggreen · 27/06/2018 10:35

We were up due to dog/School run but I was a bit surprised
DH is German and he can’t get over the fact we are actually allowed to mow the lawn on Sundays without a pack of terrifying Omas descending upon us to administer a bollocking !

Meanwhile, in the real world, some people work shifts, some people spent half the night studying, some people are unwell, some kids don't start school until 9am and don't need to be up or their parents until 8am, some people are having a day off or are retired.

You do realise that the world doesn't revolve around YOUR schedule, or are you happy to be kept awake late at night and awaken at dawn at the weekends too? Even if you are, other people have a right to enjoy peace and quiet.

0lgaDaPolga · 27/06/2018 10:50

YABU because I’m massively jealous you have a baby that lets you sleep until 8.30am Envy mine is up at the crack of dawn!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 27/06/2018 11:00

Most people are at work by 830!

catinasplashofsunshine · 27/06/2018 11:00

ikeepafork I work shifts, but you can't expect anyone else to work around your shift pattern - if one person is on earlies, one lates, one nights, one 9-5 there is actually no slot at all when nobody is sleeping.

8:3am is fine. I'd been at work for 2 and a half hours by then, what with not working 9-5 Wink

Hopping your DH would think 8:30 on a weekday fine probably.

Kursk · 27/06/2018 11:27

For outside tasks I think 30 mins after sunrise until 30 mins before sunset are acceptable.

someoneseatenmyapple · 27/06/2018 11:33

YABU workmen can start at 8, so really no difference imho.

MirandaWest · 27/06/2018 11:33

That gives quite a wide amount of time - sunrise is 4:35 here and sunset 21:40. Would prefer people not to be mowing lawns at 5:05 in the hopes I’ll still be asleep!

BarbaraofSevillle · 27/06/2018 11:35

So from around 5 am until 10 pm at this time of year then? Yes that seems perfectly reasonable Grin.

Xenia · 27/06/2018 11:37

Follow the rules your local council set and you can't go far wrong. Ours says something like not before 8am for builders (most people with children at school are up by 8am and if you are retired I don't see why you think you deserve a lie in and shift workers can wear ear plus). No noise once peoplle go to bed however. In some Swiss flats no flushing off loos after 10pm even. Well done the Swiss.

letsallhaveanap · 27/06/2018 11:59

YANBU but sadly thats not a widely held view because everyone here does it at that time....
Id not complain but it does piss me off.... especially when its a weekend or the person doing it clearly has the entire day off work... so they just get up at the crack of dawn to make loads of noise and then sit there in relative silence for the rest of the day.... it feels a bit personal lol like they are screaming 'get up and do some housework you lazy sleeping bastards!!'
Cant stand it when builders do loads of work at 8am either, then clear off before 11..... WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT?

letsallhaveanap · 27/06/2018 12:01

I have got a toddler who would sleep till 9am if allowed however.. which has biased my view...

Amanduh · 27/06/2018 12:06

I say after 8am weekdays and weekends everyday household noise/lawnmower/kids in garden is fine.

WerkSupp · 27/06/2018 12:08

YANBU

Kursk · 27/06/2018 12:58

Yes it’s a wide window, but there is a lot to do in the summer. We need to make the most of the daylight hours.

catinasplashofsunshine · 27/06/2018 13:09

Kursk don't you live down a remote logging trail in Alaska or somewhere and keep a chainsaw in your boot and shoot people who don't like your dog? I suspect people on this thread are discussing suburban Britain.

If you've no neighbors for 20 miles you can use your lawn mower and chain saw at 4am or midnight byte light of your enormous pick up truck's headlights, nobody will care.

Mumwotdrums · 27/06/2018 19:51

If anybody near me starts mowing their lawn half an hour after sun up or is still going half an hour before sun down then I will be putting their lawnmower where there is no sun!!!!

Kaykay06 · 27/06/2018 20:50

8.30 is fine for me, I’d be long gone for an early and not quite home after a night ahift so better then than in the middle of the day when I’m trying to sleep. It’s a lawn mower worse noises to be annoyed by, more my hayfever that wakes me early at the moment so it wouldn’t help but I’d rather that than neighbours garden being like a jungle

ReadingRiot · 27/06/2018 21:02

The rule for commercial noise is 7am in the week and 8am at weekends, and the or at least that's what the letter I've received from the school across the road says. They will be having building work over the summer and need to work 7 days pw to finish for Sept, but they will be considerate and not start before 7am or 8am at weekends

Xenia · 28/06/2018 09:40

Our council's rules seem a good sensible set
"Unacceptable times for noisy building work to take place
The authority runs a Considerate Contractors Scheme that states that noisy building work should not take place:

before 8am and after 6pm Monday to Friday
before 8am and after 1pm on Saturdays
on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

Noise related work outside these hours would generally only be allowed if the builder could justify this work e.g. it was necessary for health and safety reasons. These restrictions may also not relate to works carried out by statutory undertakers e.g. Railway undertakers. Also, the building work must be done using equipment that is well-maintained and as quiet as possible. "

LayOfTheLand · 28/06/2018 09:52

In our Swiss village, it's from 7am to 12, then from 1 to 7pm, and of course, not on Sundays.

I would say 8.30 is perfectly fine (though 7 seems a touch early).

TopWorrier · 28/06/2018 09:58

YANBU, my other half and his brothers regularly work nights, my other half specifically works almost 24 hour shifts sometimes, gets home at 6am and will need to sleep in the morning to catch up.
