Why are people so down on fruit these days?

Bursting with vitamins and enzymes and fibre, yet I’m reading more and more on Mumsnet and elsewhere about the insidious dangers of unbridled fruit consumption. A Mumsnetter once wrote that a poster way as well eat a bag of Haribo as juice up a load of fruit.

AIBU to think that a punnet of strawberries is still a pretty good thing to put in your body?

I think some people blame fruit for problems caused by generally bad eating habits.
So cut out the fruit ( it’s full of sugar and acid 😱) but stick to mars bars and crisps and processed crap. What a great excuse to eat junk food ! And it’s cheaper too Grin

mikado1 · 27/06/2018 14:25

What?! Years? That's revolting. I find strawberries at the moment are just right but must eat within 48h.

Fuzzyend · 27/06/2018 14:43

Not everyone can handle much, if any, fruit. If you are insulin resistant (and probably half of us are) eating multiple portions of fruit other than berries on a regular basis probably is not a good idea.

PuppyMonkey · 27/06/2018 15:38

Thanks to those explaining about the rareness of scurvy - my comment was made in jest as indicated by the addition of a Grin

I understand that a lot of fruit is stored for up to a year in vast silos with some kind of gas pumped in to stop it ripening, hence the crap taste

I didn't know about that, but I agree that an awful lot of supermarket fruit has no taste at all. Interesting that people are saying that fruit is genetically modified to be sweeter than natural, as I do not believe that at all. Natural, properly ripened fruit is sweet, the stuff sold in supermarkets isn't even that.

LARLARLAND · 27/06/2018 16:23

I think that shops are selling more of the very sweet varieties of fruit these days, a case in point being Pink Lady apples.

Belindabauer · 27/06/2018 16:29

To be fair there is also evidence that eating a lo t of meat can lead to diabitis.
I can t link here as it was my dd who showed me the video footage.
The meat industry is very powerful though, so we are still bombarded with the notion that eating meat provides lots of protein.
The sugar industry is huge and powerful too so you don't get true facts.

BIWI · 27/06/2018 16:41

How can meat cause diabetes?! Would love to see that evidence

halfwitpicker · 27/06/2018 16:42

Not diabetes, BIWI, diabitis. You know, that other condition.

BIWI · 27/06/2018 16:43

Ah. Google is my friend:

This review found that eating processed meat was associated with a 19% higher risk of type 2 diabetes; however, the researchers did not find any higher risk of diabetes among individuals eating unprocessed red meat, such as beef, pork, or lamb.3

LimboLuna · 27/06/2018 16:43

But surely that proves too much of anything is bad and moderation is the key

Belindabauer · 27/06/2018 16:45

I'll ask dd she has the footage. I don't know how to link it.

BIWI · 27/06/2018 16:46

Oh yes, how silly of me, @halfwitpicker Grin

blackteasplease · 27/06/2018 16:57

I like it!

My children have plenty of fruit (alongside other things) but obviously have to brush their teeth regularly, go to the dentist and do plenty of exercise.

CherryNib · 27/06/2018 17:33

To suggest fruit and haribo are directly comparable is ridiculous @cherrynib and this kind of ignorant comment is why people have no idea how to eat well.

I didn't suggest anything of the sort. I said the sugar is the same whether it's in fruit or candy. Which is a fact.

SleepFreeZone · 27/06/2018 17:39

Did you also avoid vegetables sleepfree? Because peppers and broccoli contain more vitamin c than say, oranges. I think you were ok to avoid fruit.

I was doing a low carb/keto diet for a long time so yep I was avoid both veggies and fruits. Not good for my health I’ve decided so I stopped.

Birdsgottafly · 27/06/2018 18:28

""(Most) Fruit is full of sugar, and sugar is a major problem at the moment because of its role in obesity.
I didn't suggest anything of the sort. I said the sugar is the same whether it's in fruit or candy. Which is a fact.""

It isn't and every bit of proper research says that it isn't.

We metabolise artificial and natural foods differently.

Some fruits can increase fat burning and make our bodies work that bit better when exercising. As well as other benefits.

Unless your diet is perfect, (in which case it would include fruit) and you are on a specific training schedule, it is ridiculous to worry about fruit consumption.

Birdsgottafly · 27/06/2018 18:32

"Nearly every bit on healthy eating will have people warning about the dangers of eating too much fruit"

The Doctor led stuff doesn't.

2up2manydown · 27/06/2018 18:45

Eating fruit in moderation is fine, but think of it as a treat in the same way you would a chocolate bar or a can of Coke

😂 All right then. Will do. Maybe treat myself to a small apple on a Sunday after church.

@SleepFreeZone

Why on earth were you avoiding vegetables if you were low carbing? Low carbing isn't no carbing - and you need veg (and some fruit) for good nutrition

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/06/2018 19:26

blogs.scientificamerican.com/brainwaves/is-sugar-really-toxic-sifting-through-the-evidence/

Don’t worry about the fruit. It’s not really the problem.

lljkk · 27/06/2018 19:32

Our strawberries & raspberry plants are in overflow right now; so much fruit to get thru daily. AND I have a mango to slather over. Y U M

Parker231 · 27/06/2018 20:00

I probably have five portions of fruit a day and the same for veggies. I’ve favourites but try and have a variety. The more fruit and veggies I eat the more energy I have and the better I feel. I can tell when I’ve not had enough.

RoboJesus · 27/06/2018 20:04

I just find all this fear mongering funny. I've had unlimited amounts of fruit my entire life. Never been overweight, had a cavity, or had any issues with blood sugar levels. When I was little for an entire summer fruit was all I ate!
