To ask if there's a Aptamil supply issue?

So aptamil said they were changing their formula and the box, but there was nothing parents needed to do - have always used their first milk.

However, having seen the shelf full once of the new stuff in the new boxes, we haven't been able to get any!

We have a big Sainsbury's and 24 hour big Tesco, and both have been without for nearly two weeks!

We had to travel to the next big city to get some, and I'm worried when then run out if they will have the same problem.

Is this an issue with our supermarkets here? Or have other people noticed the same?
Has anyone used he new formula?

I am not personally affected but was in the baby aisle in Sainsbury’s yesterday and overheard a woman telling her friend that ‘there was no Aptamil at all’. So based on my overheard anecdata of one, you’re right!

Coleco · 26/06/2018 20:49

Hey!

No shortage here (Edinburgh) however I sent DH our to get a new tin last week as we had run out- and he returned with the new packaging. He said there was no "older" style boxes on the shelf (Big Tesco Extra)

I thought there nothing we had to do other than change it over

However....you do! I looked online and it advises to introduce gradually- which I didn't do, and now there's only the new style. My 10 week old has had funny poo's (not formed, a big watery - sorry if TMI!) but now I need to make sure I always get the new style so his tummy isn't upset again!

Jeez!

So I would personally have an extra old style tub and transition over slowly.

The new one smells sweeter? Not sure why they have to bloomin change it!!

Loveluella · 26/06/2018 20:51

I’m not aware of any issues with Aptamil, but we recently switched to Aldi Mamia formula as it’s near enough identical ingredients. If you have an Aldi nearby it might be worth trying it. Haven’t noticed any difference and as a bonus, it’s cheaper.

crumble9 · 26/06/2018 20:57

@Coleco that really surprises me! One of our old boxes came with a leaflet saying you didn't have to do anything. Bit concerning..

If we are going to have issues like that I might have to look and see about a different brand maybe ..

Cow and gate stage 1 milk has almost identical ingredients to aptamil, might be worth phasing it out and replacing if there is a supply issue.

Amanduh · 26/06/2018 20:59

Loads around here.

mayandjuniper · 26/06/2018 21:02

Cow and Gate is identical in ingredients and by the same company. Just get that if you're stuck. They only do the two separate brands to make it look like there's a choice and make more money.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/06/2018 21:04

Can’t get our Aptamil Reflux from Tesco which is annoying so I have to go to Sainsburys especially. Argh! Always had trouble getting regular premade formulas too.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/06/2018 21:06

And yes in general I’ve noticed empty Aptamil shelves in the supermarket. And never any Aptamil whatsoever in all the coop/tesco metro/Sainsburys local type shops.

bobstersmum · 26/06/2018 21:06

When I had ds 5.5 years ago he was in c&g comfort milk. There was a manufacturing issue and it was really hard to get hold of. After speaking to the manufacturer we were told its (c&g) the same as aptamil.
I managed to get a stock pile off a local chemist who luckily had 5 tubs of it!

Drchinnery · 26/06/2018 21:09

Our Sainsbury's is the same but it's been going on a couple of weeks so thought it was a store issue! The other week they had no ready made at all then Saturday no aptamil whatsoever, except 1 box of comfort which I needed luckily as I've changed, but they've also stopped AR I noticed. Asda I popped in last week was the same

Pumpkinpie789 · 26/06/2018 21:14

Our Tesco hasn’t had Aptamil 1 powder for a couple of weeks. Weird thing is the new packaging says it’s 0-6 months whereas old said 0-12 months. DD is 11 months so I was planning to move her to cows’ milk soon anyway. But now I don’t know whether to move the switch forward or switch her to the new Aptamil 1, or the new Aptamil 2 Confused

TrashPanda · 26/06/2018 21:14

Someone on a Facebook group I'm in did a live chat with them to ask about the change. The advisor just kept repeating the marketing stuff to most questions and contradicting themself. Said it's only the formulation that's changed, not the ingredients but couldn't explain how that would affect babies except to say it probably wouldn't but transition over gradually and expect poos to be a bit different for a while.

EggysMom · 26/06/2018 21:16

Don't know what type it was, but I did notice a handmade sign next to the Aptamil in my local Asda today that said "maximum 6 per customer".

Yura · 26/06/2018 21:16

All infant formulas (within a stage) are pretty much identical - just get any. The main difference is price ( I used to work for one of the big producers).

TrashPanda · 26/06/2018 21:17

The change from 0-12 to 0-6 will be to do with marketing rules around first formula. If they state they can push follow on for 6+ months which can be advertised. If the box says 12 months more people will still use it. I'll see if I can find the thing from the live chat.

JW13 · 26/06/2018 21:23

I've just looked on Ocado and the hungry baby Aptamil (0-12 months) is out of stock but the new version (0-6 months) is in stock.

The new versions also seem to be 800g instead of 900g for the same price so is this also a stealth price increase? Angry

crumble9 · 26/06/2018 21:56

Thanks for the quick responses!

I have messaged them on Facebook and they say there is no supply issues, but to have all types of powered first milks out of stock in two different supermarkets for two weeks would suggest otherwise .. 🤨 that doesn't seem like it was just missed of the order form

There's a lot of angry parents saying they have had issues with the new milk, feel like if that's the case it might be worth changing to a different brand. And as @TrashPanda mentioned they have seemed to back track and now be saying a gradual switch, which is impossible if you can't get the old one at all!

The quantity reduction is also very frustrating

OP posts:
welshweasel · 26/06/2018 22:00

I have no idea why anyone buys aptamil in the first place - it’s cow and gate in an expensive tub! Just switch and save yourself some money.

Kpo58 · 26/06/2018 22:35

HIPP has also been having supply issues as they are changing the packaging on the premade formula.

What is bugging me is that on the HIPP website, it looks like they are selling the new style bottles (90ml) for the same price as the old style (200ml). I do hope this is an error and not what will be appearing in the shops, though I'll have to wait till July to find out (as that is when they will be releasing the new version).

Coleco · 26/06/2018 23:01

What's also annoying is the Pre made is still the old "formulation" so if you have the odd ready made 200ml bottle you are giving the old one- so silly!

Yeah I heard about the ALDI one being the exact same!

I was annoyed as the leaflet said not to do anything- and annoyed I didn't look further into it online! But hey.

Coleco · 26/06/2018 23:02

@crumble9

Ah....the g difference makes sense now! A tub normally lasts a week (just) but I had to buy a new one today and only got the precious tub on Thursday! Cheeky feckers!

Windydayz · 26/06/2018 23:09

Why oh why do they do this? That's really cheeky to say we dont need to do anything but their website says otherwise.

I'll probably switch to Aldi or C&G now. Cheeky fuckers changing quantity. Angry

Eemamc · 26/06/2018 23:52

Cow and Gate is basically the same product both made by Danone...difference in marketing only. I’d get that

JW13 · 27/06/2018 00:17

Hopefully this picture will Work but there's an explanation on their Facebook page saying the price increase is due to their increased costs/research etc in revamping the formulation. But prices are all down to the retailer apparently Hmm
