To think if you lock your dogs in a sweltering car...

For thirty minutes (or any prolonged period) on a hot day you should be prosecuted and the dogs shouldn't be returned to your care? Just seen a Daily Mail article regarding this as police have had to smash windows to save two labs who were so hot they had to be hosed down by the RSPCA. Frankly, after 30 minutes, it's lucky they are not dead. I've been seconds away from smashing the window of a van parked near my work with two absolutely boiling GS dogs inside with no windows open, parked in the full sun. The owner came dashing over proclaiming they had only been there for 15 minutes. 15 minutes in a closed car on a summers day! How bloody stupid do you have to be to do this?!

YANBU, not even in the slightest. I would find it hard to believe there is anyone who wouldn't know this is wrong, just plenty who don't care.

TheFaerieQueene · 26/06/2018 16:50

I think they should be locked in a hot car. See how they like it. Bastards.

Ohmydayslove · 26/06/2018 16:53

Makes me so bloody angry op. Totally agree with you. I would smash a window in a heart beat if I saw a dog suffering and report them. Angry

I haven’t even walked my small dog this week just garden grass fun. Pavement too hot

SoddingUnicorns · 26/06/2018 16:54

There’s a very scary video online of a chef putting an uncooked pizza in a car on a hot day and it cooks in the same amount of time as an oven.

YADNBU OP, I wouldn’t leave my dog in a car for 5 minutes, never mind half an hour.

Kursk · 26/06/2018 16:56

Nope bad idea, unless you leave the engine running with the A\C on which is what we do.

AForegoneConclusion · 26/06/2018 16:57

It just baffles me! Is it genuine stupidity or just not giving a shit? Because it's not even like it is dog based knowledge, it is common sense -cars get hot, as a human you wouldn't sit in a baking car for half an hour with the doors and windows shut. How can anyone think an animal can cope with that? It really upsets me because it must be horrific suffering.

I've just read that too. Rspca have said they will be prosecuted, there's just no excuse for it.

Bubblenuggets · 26/06/2018 16:59

There is no excuse for this. I really hope the owners are prosecuted and are not allowed the dogs back.

bellinisurge · 26/06/2018 16:59

I reported this recently. Don't know if the owners got their dog back.

KarmaStar · 26/06/2018 17:02

You are absolutely right.I have,I will continue to report to the rspca, the police(who try to pass on to rspca )if none available and no way of contacting owner the window has to go in and the dogs released.don't give them very cold water though,it should be tepid.
If possible photo dog in car first and it get a witness but don't delay.
People are extremely ignorant and cruel at leaving them in the car .

Barkface · 26/06/2018 17:08

Ohmydayslove I walked mine yesterday quite early but today the sun was out so early I couldn't do it, way too hot. I thought maybe I was the only one and was being a meanie!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/06/2018 17:08

Yes to the pavement! It’s been v hot here for days now and DH has been up at six am to walk our Labrador boy and then out again at nine pm because it’s just been too much for him, lots of panting and water slurping when he gets back (Dog not DH Smile). What goes through people’s minds I wonder because no one can have failed to be aware of dogs dying in cars before when it’s been all over the press. Do they think oh I’ll only be five minutes? Or It’s not that hot? Boggling.

SoddingUnicorns · 26/06/2018 17:25

I got my dog some heat boots. She looks bloody ridiculous but she’s too big and bouncy not to be walked daily and I was terrified she’d burn her paws.

SoddingUnicorns · 26/06/2018 17:26

Obviously small dogs can get away with it, it wasn’t a criticism I’m sorry if it read that way! Just that my dog is a holy terror without her walks.

BasicUsername · 26/06/2018 17:44

I totally agree, I think any sort of animal cruelty ought to incur a lifetime ban (which is actually checked on a regular basis).

What infuriates me even further are the pathetic sentences given to those found guilty.

Wolfiefan · 26/06/2018 17:48

I would leave my dog for a couple of minutes on a cool day. We have air con and privacy glass so it's lovely and cold when I stop the engine. She can't be seen through the glass and the car doesn't get hot.
On a day like today? No bloody chance. 30 degrees and the car would feel like a furnace within minutes of the engine being off. We did indoors dog training today then popped to the pet shop. She came in with me and I felt guilty she had to take a few steps outside on the pavement. Far too hot.
Home with the fan on, windows open and curtains closed against the sun.
And no. Having your window open a crack or parking in the shade isn't bloody good enough. Angry

SoddingUnicorns where can I buy heat boots.
We have no garden at the moment so I'm having to go out but staying on grass and carrying her where it isn't shady (she's huge)

Wolfiefan · 26/06/2018 17:52

Sorry. I don't understand Fahrenheit! Blush

FairfaxAikman · 26/06/2018 17:55

My car is specifically set up as a rest area for my dog when I'm at shows.

I have fans, cool coats, water, a frame to allow me to leave the boot door open and a massive reflective sheet to cover the car. The inside is often cooler than outside so I join them.

D spite all that, I still wouldn't take the dogs to the supermarket in this weather.

AForegoneConclusion · 26/06/2018 17:56

85 f is about 29 degrees. So inside a car for 30 minutes the temp inside would be around 48c.

@Takethemdown I got ours from Pets at Home. Usually hate the place but was looking online and found them!

Takethemdown · 26/06/2018 18:42

Thank you!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/06/2018 18:45

I hope they get prosecuted and I hope it gets publicised.

Twats.

SoddingUnicorns · 26/06/2018 18:50

@Takethemdown no problem. They’re really ugly and kind of daft looking but they keep her paws safe and her happy so I’ll take it!
