Obviously I would never do that intentionally, however...

Im 7 months pregnant and was out shopping on Saturday, and I had been the loo before I left, and when I arrived at the shopping centre.

I was in Superdrug and I literally just had to go, so I politely asked the security guard and explained I'm pregnant (even though it's very obvious) and she outright said no. That there are toilets in Asda, which is at least a 5 minute walk (10 minute waddle) away.

Let's just say it didn't end too great for me and I was mortified

Surely there's some sort of law for pregnant women to use staff toilets when shopping?

Boffin90 · 26/06/2018 20:17

I always thought it was illegal to refuse a pregnant woman to relieve herself (of course I mean wee Wink). At one time she could ask a policeman for his helmet to pee in.

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/06/2018 20:46

My boss complained at me using the loo so much when I was pregnant. I was told to keep well hydrated and was drinking a lot of water which of course meant I had to go to the loo so much.

The time I didn't drink so much so they wouldn't moan I ended up off sick with dehydration.

I have so many more moans about that job and being pregnant but that's a whole other thread lol.

GorgonLondon · 26/06/2018 21:06

I wish people would stop spreading this bullshit about policemen's helmets.
There is no law about it nor any law about pregnant women in general urinating.

Sasstal67 · 27/06/2018 20:25

Pregnant women are the only people allowed to pee in public spaces in the UK. Unfortunately that law doesn't cover staff only toilets.

Unihorn · 27/06/2018 20:30

Not really the same but our baby changing facilities were out of order in the restaurant and I let people use the office to change babies. I've also let women breastfeed in there if they don't feel comfortable in the restaurant.

I'm slightly concerned by the large amount of people who seem to work in shops with very dangerous routes to their toilets though..! Do you not have fire risk assessments in place?!

Sneezeandooops · 27/06/2018 20:55

Like others have said its insurance related. Risk assesments would be done for staff.

I was always told a pregnant lady could pee in a policemans hat if necessary, lol how true it is I don't know but could be worth finding out, especially if they are closer than the nearest toilet.

Sneezeandooops · 27/06/2018 20:57

That will teach me to read the whole thread before commenting about police helmets, sorry

Idontevencareanymore · 27/06/2018 21:04

In my workplace wed not allow you to use the toilets. You have to go through stockrooms to get to the toilets through the locker room, not to mention passing offices with confidential staff information.

So while it may seem unreasonable to say no there's always a good reason.

Cotswoldmama · 27/06/2018 21:13

Where I work we have recently been told that customers can use our toilets. We dont publicise it in our shop though as we have a few undesirable customers. But we I have let a couple of kids, pregnant women etc use our toilets when they’ve asked. I guess different shops have different rules

Shumpalumpa · 27/06/2018 21:21

Some stores do allow you to use staff toilets, (b&q, next have helped my mum) but I think it's at their discretion.

We've always found a friendly smile and word have worked.

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/06/2018 21:28

Primark let me use the staff toilets also Aldi.

disahsterdahling · 27/06/2018 21:32

If the corridor is that dangerous they're not covered for their own staff, either. Doesn't sound very safe for employees.

there seems to be a growing sense of entitlement to use private loos in shops or other businesses

Not entitlement, just a sense that public loos are disappearing and people are massively precious about allowing their loos to be used, even when customer facing eg in a cafe when they lock them and you have to produce a receipt to get the key or similar.

disahsterdahling · 27/06/2018 21:35

It's also a pain that the toilets in major stations are all fee based. Very annoying. Bet they bring in a lot of revenue

I think Network Rail is doing away with the charges. But plenty of stations have their toilets behind the ticket barriers or revenue inspectors.

Mind you, I wouldn't take a revenue inspector telling me I couldn't use the loo.

OFuckShitAndBollocks · 27/06/2018 22:27

You'll be pleased to know that there is a law allowing pregnant women to wee into policemen's helmets! And I do believe that said policemen are also required to shield pregnant ladies from view with their cloaks/capes....obviously a very old law!

BellaJessica · 27/06/2018 23:02

I agree I think toilets should be freely available within reasonable distance of public places. The toilet at my work is awful to get there and the council wont do anything. The stock rooms are crumbling theres used needles, which the council have given us a sharps box to dispose of. But no way could we allow someone in it. We tell them to use the pub across the road.

Baaba · 28/06/2018 00:10

@slashlover if that's the route to your toilet that's surely a health & safety issue for any employee?

cheval · 28/06/2018 00:40

Tis why wee, geddit?, need public toilets!! All closing down!!

Kokeshi123 · 28/06/2018 00:51

When I did voluntary work in Oxfam I was told not to allow members of the public to use the toilets due to the rules. It sucked and I felt sorry for parents with little kids etc, but there was nothing I could do about it.

GorgonLondon · 28/06/2018 07:20

Rtft, this has been debunked several times

lovetheway · 28/06/2018 07:26

Policeman's helmet is the new Cancel the Cheque Grin

dorisdog · 28/06/2018 09:57

I thought it was the law that you are entitled to wee in a police officers hat when pregnant. Only those pointy, round old fashioned ones, though...(I have no idea where I heard this). I think the guard could at least have been kinder ro you, op.

dorisdog · 28/06/2018 09:58

Ah. Crossed posts. I see police hats are already the new topic :-)

GorgonLondon · 28/06/2018 10:19

Only because everyone keeps coming and posting the same old urban myth without reading any of the previous 123 messages saying the same thing...

33goingon64 · 28/06/2018 10:46

When I was pg and vomiting loads I asked to use the staff loo at Edgeware Road station to be sick. They were very kind and let me go in. I'll always be grateful for that.
