Obviously I would never do that intentionally, however...

Im 7 months pregnant and was out shopping on Saturday, and I had been the loo before I left, and when I arrived at the shopping centre.

I was in Superdrug and I literally just had to go, so I politely asked the security guard and explained I'm pregnant (even though it's very obvious) and she outright said no. That there are toilets in Asda, which is at least a 5 minute walk (10 minute waddle) away.

Let's just say it didn't end too great for me and I was mortified

Surely there's some sort of law for pregnant women to use staff toilets when shopping?

Please make an appointment to see your midwife or GP. If you’re only 7 months and the urge to pee comes on very suddenly and you can’t hold it for the 5 minutes it takes to get to the Asda loos then you might have a bad UTI.

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 26/06/2018 14:46

Tut...Nair...it's just an urban myth

distantstars · 26/06/2018 14:47

Aren't pregnant women allowed to pee in a police-persons hat? Sure it's an old law that was never got rid of!....

TheOrigFV45 · 26/06/2018 14:49

Was there no coffee shop or the like nearby; somewhere that had a loo for the public? Even if you're not buying anything I'm sure they'd let a pregnant woman use it.

BellaJessica · 26/06/2018 14:49

Not a legal thing? In my current work staff toilets are through 3 stockrooms up two flights of steep concrete stairs shared with a flat above and sometimes has used syringes left in the doorway so no we would never let a customer use it.

lhastingsmua · 26/06/2018 14:56

When I worked in retail, our staff toilets were down the corridor from:

  • the staff room
  • our locker room (including staff wallets, phones, laptops),
  • our admin office (where admin cash up and keep cash/coins for the till; our payslips, store electronic tools etc kept here and complete payroll/store back system accessible by the computers)
  • managers offices (think of all the confidential information/meetings)
  • security office (where cctv is reviewed and security liaise)
  • training room (staff meetings, inductions etc)

Down along the corridor would also be two stockrooms, which would potentially be filled with masses of untagged stock, or loose security tags/pins and ladders in random areas which could cause injury to the public.

As you can imagine, the staff and the company risk privacy, security and safety by allowing members of the public to enter our back of house. It’s not as simple as you think to just ‘pop to the loo’.

I would definitely see your GP if a trip to Superdrug (which wouldn’t be as long as a grocery store or clothing store trip!) completely depletes your bladder and causes you to wet yourself rather than make the 5 minute walk to public toilets. That’s very extreme.

LakieLady · 26/06/2018 15:46

The Leader of my local council thinks public loos are unnecessary.

Wouldn't you just love to catch him (I assume it's a man, even more shameful if it's a woman) pissing up a wall after a night out?

lifechangesforever · 26/06/2018 15:48

I'm 37 weeks pregnant and would be able to manage a 5 minute walk at any time for the toilet.

I'm not saying it would be an easy or comfortable experience (my life definitely revolves around toilets now!) but at 7 months, I'd say you need to get it checked out as it could be an infection.

LakieLady · 26/06/2018 15:59

Suffering from old lady's bladder as I do, I know where every public toilet is in the patch I work in, and could rate them on a scale of 1-10.

Libraries and council offices are my top choice, always clean, well stocked with paper, lights that work etc, and public ones in the street the worst, especially the one in the town centre that has been colonised by junkies and usually has used needles in and often blood splattered up the walls. And they lock most of them up at 7pm.

A lot of my clients are in rural areas though, and I have had to park up and pee in field entrances before now. That's still more hygienic than some of the public toilets though.

Jackandrose

Being a dick as usual 🙄

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 26/06/2018 16:26

It's not true, really.
Local council byelaws generally have urinating in a public place covered, and not by a copper's helmet Grin

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 26/06/2018 16:33

Superdrug in particular have to have very strict rules. I have a few friends who work there absolutely the security around clocking in/out/loo breaks is incredibly tight.

I really feel for you, I can imagine how embarrassed you felt but you’re pregnant, not disabled.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 26/06/2018 16:34

Ignore the random “absolutely” in my post...my phones on crack today apparently.

MeMyShelfandIkea · 26/06/2018 16:39

@Wellfuckmeinbothears Did your phone sneak off to Superdrug's bog?

Fabricwitch · 26/06/2018 16:51

I know you now realise why you couldn't use it, but to the pp saying they are not obligated to but would be kind to let you:
I work in retail and we are absolutely under no circumstances allowed to let a customer use our toilets, no matter how kind we are feeling. They are not covered under insurance, we have valuable stock and our safe out the back, we have other customers and staff members personal information, etc etc

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 26/06/2018 16:58

It is a pain that there are not more public loos around....

I too have experienced many times.... I went before I came out but I need to use loo in next 2 mins I'm going to flood me trial blood all over the floor....

It got so bad that there were area of town I wouldn't go to when menstruating.... No public loos/council offices /mcdonalds /wetherspoons....

For those who need to wee..... She wee and voluminous clothes are your friend

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 26/06/2018 17:29

Shhhh MeMyShelfandIkea...they’ll work out that “Superdrug” is just a big front for crack. And we thought the name was fool proof...

OliviaStabler · 26/06/2018 17:37

It is a pain that there are not more public loos around....

It's also a pain that the toilets in major stations are all fee based. Very annoying. Bet they bring in a lot of revenue.

MovingThisYearHopefully · 26/06/2018 19:40

Definitely see your GP. My life has always revolved arounds toilets, but even at 9+ months PG I never wet myself. I'd say you may have a nasty infection there, as others have suggested. Get checked out OP. Flowers

BitOfAKerfuffle · 26/06/2018 19:50

I think YABU. There are people who deal with issues like this all the time who have disabilities and aren't just dealing with it a for a few weeks when they are heavily pregnant
...you are flipping pregnant just deal with it and go to a toilet as soon as u feel you need to go !
My workplace has a staff toilet only it's through a kitchen so we can't allow customers to use it as it's dangerous and insurance wouldn't cover for any injuries that happened to the customer should they complain that they knocked a saucepan and got burnt etc.
I hated being begged to use the toilet by often pregnant women and people with young children. When I was pregnant I was stood there most nights desperate to go to the toilet but unable to leave my position if it was busy so I could go. So actually I had little or no sympathy for these other pregnant women demanding they needed the toilet because they are pregnant !

greeneyedlulu · 26/06/2018 19:58

Strange one as I've come across nice staff when in yoi

greeneyedlulu · 26/06/2018 20:00

Damn phone sorry but I should have said

Strange one as I've come across nice staff when in your position and horrid ones too. However I'm more shocked at people working in those conditions on a day to day basisShock

Figgygal · 26/06/2018 20:03

It never would have crossed my mind to ask to use shop loos like this pregnant or not sorry op

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 26/06/2018 20:04

Once I attended a party at Lush in Kensington High Street, I was recovering from a kidney infection and explained that I had to flush it out (I'd been hospitalised), they very kindly let me use their loo, but there wasn't any great risk and I wasn't pregnant.
