Neighbours’ swimming pool

This isn’t an AIBU as I know I am completely being VVV U. But does anyone have any sympathy with me?
I completely resent my neighbours and their swimming pool. I completely resent being in the garden when they have a pool party and they don’t invite us! It is sheer unadulterated jealousy!

You should ask them if you can use it! We have a pool on the farm and it is used daily from May to September. We will have a regular early morning swim, and then it’s used throughout the day by anyone who fancies it really, we always tell people to come and use it on days like today. It’s being heated and run anyway, someone may as well get the use of it!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 25/06/2018 15:02

Our neighbours have a heated outdoor pool, quietly depreciating their property and costing them thousands in maintenance.

We’re freinds so all the benefits and none of the costs. Going around a bit later for a dip Grin

Whatthefoxgoingon · 25/06/2018 15:04

Friends even. I’ve never been a freind, honest Smile

WhatchaMaCalllit · 25/06/2018 15:09

I really wouldn't envy them.
This reminds me of the thread from MN where the next door neighbour got locked into their neighbours garden which they were using the neighbours play equipment without permission and the trespassing neighbours were cross that they couldn't use it any longer. I have tried to search for that thread (to link it to this one) but I can't seem to find it.

CoraPirbright · 25/06/2018 15:13

Ah Watcha I remember that one! There was also another, maybe on the infamous Mexican house thief thread where someone had bought a house with a pool and a neighbour kept letting herself in for a swim on the basis that the old owners allowed it. Even after they had had a word, she was spotted loitering with a towel, waiting for them to go out!!

We have a pool - sorry to annoy you further but it is absolutely brilliant. Kids go mad in it, no need to have to endlessly think of things to do on sunny days over the holidays, friends come around with their kids and we chat and have a drink whilst they are all happily occupied. Yes it is ££ but I adore it. Sorry. Blush

Cyw2018 · 25/06/2018 15:14

My friend has it really tough her next door neighbours have an indoor pool and a hot tub....

She only has an indoor pool!!!

I feel for her, I really do!!!

sprinklesandsauce · 25/06/2018 15:21

My parents used to have a big blow up pool and it was fantastic in this sort of weather. YANBU at all to be jealous. When I was a kid, the old couple at the bottom of the hill had a swimming pool and they used to let all the children come and swim in it, it was fabulous.

There is one house with a pool in the village where I live and as soon as i win the lottery I am going to make them an offer that they can't refuse Grin.

crispysausagerolls · 25/06/2018 15:32

YANBU i am melting in the heat. I would give someone untold riches for a pool this week, even of the paddling variety

Sharkwithknees · 25/06/2018 15:34

PLEASE just swim in the pool OP, whenever you see fit. It's been too long since Mexico house thief story and I want to see your neighbour's thread about crazy pool thief neighbour Grin

blackteasplease · 25/06/2018 15:36

I'd be eaten up with jealousy I think!

I also feel jealous when my neighbours (any of them!) have bbqs and I can smell it! But can never be arsed to do one myself. Grin

Effendi · 25/06/2018 15:38

My neighbours have a pool too. Yes I'm jealous.

littlemisscomper · 25/06/2018 15:42

I have a pool and it's nothing but bloody trouble!! If it's not the filters needing replacing it's the pump stopped working! I never even use it because there's nothing more yawn inducing to me than swimming lengths, and at 29 everyone I know is too old to 'play!'

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 25/06/2018 15:44

Go and pee in it. Bastards. Envy

MakeItStopNeville · 25/06/2018 15:58

Oh my lord! I had a neighbour who kept swimming in our pool because the previous owners let her. She was stark raving bonkers, bless her. I did a thread on it but I think that’s long gone. Thank God that was before the DM routinely stole threads as “news” as she was an avid DM reader too!

theunsure · 25/06/2018 16:05

YANBU

Our extremely irritating neighbours ( a few doors up) have a pool and they are a bloody nightmare - make a huge unnecessary amount of noise. I am convinced it is deliberate to make sure everyone knows they are using their pool! we are not best of friends, can you tell?

I'm very jealous that their garden is big enough for a pool and they can afford one - but I don't want one. Would spend all my time worried that my little hens would drown. And I've never liked an outdoor pool, I only swim if the water is absolutely the perfect temperature. But I am bitter and twisted about the fact they have one obviously! I'd possibly pop over for a paddle if it didn't require talking to them

PestoSurfissimos · 25/06/2018 16:05

I remember that thread MakeitstopNeville

I would go bonkers if I found the neighbours swimming in my pool

watchingwithinterest · 25/06/2018 16:14

It is literally the only time we enjoy the pool and now the horseflies are out in force it is a nightmare so yes being eaten alive this year :)

watchingwithinterest · 25/06/2018 16:15

PS I get tired of all the endless catering and children so actually knackered in many ways as everyone always comes to us!!

MissConductUS · 25/06/2018 16:15

My brother had a large above ground pool with a deck that joined it to the house. That was great fun when the kids were little and we'd all go up for a swim and a BBQ. He finally took it down and sold it once his kids were out of uni and off on their own and turned the space into additional garden area.

Pools are a problem in the US because so many people have been sued when neighbors or even strangers sneak in and use it and are hurt or drowned. It's considered an "attractive nuisance". Anyone who has one needs to carry extra insurance and have it very securely fenced off as a defense against a possible lawsuit.

I'm a bit surprised that they're so popular in the UK. Your summers are so much milder than ours.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 25/06/2018 16:17

It is my dream to win enough money to buy a house - the first thing installed will be a swimming pool. You are not at all unreasonable to envy the people next door. In fact, I think I'd have to move if I were you because I couldn't bear to live next door to people who had the pool when I didn't!

CanIGoToBedNow · 25/06/2018 16:20

My neighbour has one.... the previous neighbours were older and used to ring up and say come and bring the children for a swim.... it was glorious!

New neighbours are arseholes and are saying they’re going to fill it in 😧

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 25/06/2018 16:21

canigotobednow

Why don’t you build your own swimming pool? I wouldn’t want one either. They’re hardly arseholes for not wanting to keep a pool just so your children can go and play in it Confused.

x2boys · 25/06/2018 16:27

i think CanIGoToBedNow might be talking a bit tongue in cheek Rhubarb? i want one of those large over the ground pools, it would take up my entire Garden and we would look a bit foolish as we have very low fencess but still...

Bluelonerose · 25/06/2018 16:30

I have a 4 foot one in the garden atm and it's perfect Grin been sitting in the sun all day getting warm for later Grin
Just enough room for me

EdWinchester · 25/06/2018 16:30

Is it a proper swimming pool or one of those overgrown paddling pools? I could only envy a decent one.

My neighbours have just got planning permission for a 30m pool and a changing facility, complete with bathrooms. I will admit to a twinge of jealousy.
