Porridge for breakfast yet sick hungry by 9!!

LiteraryDevil1 · 25/06/2018 09:32

Probably not the right topic but not sure where else to put this.

I have porridge for breakfast with skimmed (lactofree) milk and golden syrup. Cup of tea with the same milk.

I have porridge as following a low FODMAP diet for ibs. Can't eat gluten free bread as makes me feel sick. Sometimes I add chia seeds for extra protein.

I eat around 7.15-7.30 and then walk (I don't drive) the kids to school. It's over a mile, involves 2 big hills and I'm pushing my 3 year old in his buggy. The school run accounts for 5 miles of walking a day.

By the time I've dropped them off at 9 my stomach feels hollow to the point of feeling nauseous. I thought porridge was supposed to be really good at keeping you full!

I'm breastfeeding but only morning and night mainly so twice a day and have put weight on since dropping the number of feeds so don't want to be eating more.

AIBU to expect my breakfast to keep me from feeling hungry for more than 90 minutes??

Can you add stuff like nut butter to the porridge?

I don't know what foods are ruled out by your diet but there are lots of toppings you can add to porridge. I would cut out the golden syrup and use something else.

Can you eat berries? Cinnamon, nuts and berries all go well.

bumblingbovine49 · 25/06/2018 10:31

Eggs are the only thing that works for me to stop me being hungry mid morning . Weirdly, not eating at all for breakfast usually works as well. Sometimes I am hungry at first but it usually wears off by mid morning but that is not as reliable as having eggs. Maybe full fat geek yoghurt mught work as well. The key is to have something with a reasonable amount of protein. I sometimes have cold chicken (from the day before or ready made) maybe with some olives or some nuts which works well too

Porridge is the worst for that I am afraid - I am always hungry by about 10am if I have it - particularly if I add a sugar like golden syrup,

I cannot abide porridge without honey or syrup though so I prefer to have no breakfast at all if the choice is porridge without sugar added or nothing

Marmelised · 25/06/2018 10:40

I did low FODMAP and started having porridge oats with goats milk yoghurt and grapes. Can’t face hot porridge - the smell really puts me off but cold, I really enjoy it.

I found the goats milk yoghurt a bit too strong so now have half a cup of porridge oats, a splash of water, 4 dessert spoons of goats milk yoghurt mixed with sliced banana and grapes. That keeps me full until lunchtime.

OP

Be CAREFUL with Chia seeds!!! Do you soak them first? You really should. They expand quite a lot in your stomach. It would be a bit like eating uncooked rice - small portion creates large portion when it absorbs moisture.

But you do need some protein which makes you feel fuller longer. How about adding ground or crushed nuts to your porridge? Easy and quick and lots of goodness in them?

Marmelised · 25/06/2018 10:41

Meant to add, I find goats milk much easier to tolerate than cows milk - might be helpful for low FODMAP

Frosty66612 · 25/06/2018 10:42

I once made the mistake of having a large portion of chia seeds sprinkled over my yogurt. Don’t think I’ve ever been so bloated in my life

teta · 25/06/2018 10:43

I think the Syrup is raising your blood sugar causing a spike and then a sudden drop. Try Stevia ( the only sweetener ok to use) and a bit of peanut butter with banana. Or add some pre soaked chia seeds with berries and a spoon of coconut oil. Coconut is gut soothing and tastes nice. I also try and follow the Fodmap diet due to Ibs coupled with trying to lose weight ( and blood sugar issues).

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 25/06/2018 10:45

Not rtft but I'm surprised golden syrup is allowed on low fodmap - most sugary things are out because of the ogliosaccharides etc? That may be your problem, I'm low fodmap too and I eat breakfast after the school run as no time before it. The problem arises when we have to rush off out after school drop off! I use frozen raspberries and lactofree milk in my porridge.

LiteraryDevil1 · 25/06/2018 10:51

@Marmelised goats milk is high in lactose so not suitable on a low FODMAP diet. I'm lactose intolerant.

Thanks to all the suggestions of eggs but I don't eat them. Think I did say that somewhere but maybe I forgot to add it.

I'll try soaking the chia seeds first and see if that help and look into chia pudding.

I'm not a massive fan of nuts but will try adding a small amount. Peanut butter is ok but I only like it with jam Grin I love savoury stuff but do have a sweet tooth.

Porridge is excellent for cholesterol and it's what I always advise my patients to eat for breakfast who have long term conditions and need to lose weight.

Maybe some supper before bed might help? It's as though the breakfast fills a deficit from the nighttime and then I need another breakfast later on.

Meal skipping is not as option as very unhealthy although I appreciate it works for some.

Golden syrup is allowed in small amounts on low FODMAP.

RedSaidBread · 25/06/2018 10:59

How much water are you actually drinking? Are you rehydrating properly in the morning and having plenty of water after your walk? It might not just be hunger that's affecting you.

LiteraryDevil1 · 25/06/2018 11:37

I drink lots of water as get pretty thirsty.

blackteasplease · 25/06/2018 11:42

Doesn't seem odd when you are walking thst far and you are breast feeding! Can you bring something with you to eat when you have dropped them?

Also I agree with full fat milk. Can you have yoghurt or ham or something with you breakfast?

blackteasplease · 25/06/2018 11:49

Are you allowed avocado? I'm sorry I'm not sure what is allowed and whst isn't!

Frosty66612 · 25/06/2018 11:50

@blacktease avocados are a high fodmap food :-(

ForgivenessIsDivine · 25/06/2018 11:54

I wonder what the rest of your day looks like in terms of food and energy consumption...

It sounds like you have a lot going on with your gut which will take time to heal and it takes time to work out what is OK for you to eat right now.

Carboholic · 25/06/2018 12:01

Lower the sugar, up the fat.

bsbabas · 25/06/2018 14:44

Sounds like you are burning up all that energy some dried fruit/ trail mix in your bag with a smoothie?

Verbena37 · 25/06/2018 14:49

Chop a banana (just ripe-low FODMAP) into 30g porridge with milk.
Don’t add syrup.
Add chopped dates (3 dates a day give you fab vitamins) and some berries.

You won’t need sugar or syrup as fruit is sweet.
Mix it up a bit some mornings by having a Low fat Greek yoghurt with oats and banana instead of making the oats into porridge.

LucyFox · 25/06/2018 15:08

Could you try overnight oats instead? Many people feel they fill them up more ... tbh on 1/2 cup oats i’m Not surprised you are hungry later :)

LiteraryDevil1 · 25/06/2018 19:04

I'm going to try making overnight oats with the chia tonight and see if that helps. Not eaten much today as hardly anything in and quick and easy low FODMAP veggie food that doesn't involve eggs, tomatoes or cooking are few and far between.

OP posts:
Emily7708 · 25/06/2018 19:19

Could you get rid of the dairy milk and switch to longlife Koko milk instead? You are allowed more of it and it’s much easier on the stomach and also more filling, if any milk can be described as filling.

LiteraryDevil1 · 25/06/2018 19:28

Is that the coconut stuff? I've tried it with almond milk, hemp, rice, coconut and can tolerate the almond milk in porridge but not enough to finish the bowl and have to add more syrup Grin I've got some raspberries so will add those too tomorrow. What I'd love is hot buttered toast but not filling and not good in general. Sourdough is supposed to be ok but gives me dreadful pains. I'd like a new digestive system for Christmas!

OP posts:
Frosty66612 · 25/06/2018 19:31

Have you been tested for coeliac disease?

LiteraryDevil1 · 25/06/2018 19:34

Just checked out the Koko stuff and it's only safe at half a cup so not enough to make porridge and I can't imagine coconut flavour porridge! It was yacky in tea so it got thrown away.

I've enquired about the steel cut oats and will try uncooked rolled oats too.
