To take fruit to a coffee shop

The taking your own tea bag thread reminded me
Would you think I was a CF for taking my own food (usually fruit) to a Cafe or coffee shop
I always buy a drink and if it’s vaguely early enough porridge but I usually take a box of strawberries or raspberries, or something like plums or apricots
I’m on a diet and have lots of food allergies so am pretty limited to what I can eat anyway
Most cafes even if they sell fruit only have bananas apples or oranges which I’m not that fond of

I wouldn’t think anything of it.

Porridgeprincess · 25/06/2018 09:32

Not at all unreasonable but they may not like it and could ask you to stop !

SilverySurfer · 25/06/2018 09:38

Personally I wouldn't think of taking food to a cafe and I doubt the cafe would like it either.

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 25/06/2018 09:40

Yabu they have bills and overheads to pay and you buy a drink then get your own food out, if you want to eat your own food have a picnic somewhere

kitkatsky · 25/06/2018 09:41

I'm not sure they're allowed to let you eat food bought elsewhere in a cafe because of health and safety (officially, but it's probably far more likely financially oriented)

MrTrebus · 25/06/2018 09:43

Meh no one will say anything because you are still a paying customer. If you buy a drink and porridge and put a few of your own berries on the top that's no biggie smalls.

Sirzy · 25/06/2018 09:44

I think that’s rather cheeky!

MsHomeSlice · 25/06/2018 09:50

rude AF imo

Merryoldgoat · 25/06/2018 09:51

I think that’s extremely unreasonable. I’d only take baby food and even then only if I was eating food I bought there myself.

15star · 25/06/2018 09:52

I did this the other day, needed to feed the baby so I just bought a bottle of water and ate my own fruit. I'm on a diet and they didn't sell anything healthy

Spam88 · 25/06/2018 09:55

It's pretty rude to eat your own food in a restaurant or cafe.

Racecardriver · 25/06/2018 09:58

It depends. If you are just munching in your fruit while drink g your coffee that's fine. But if you sit down, lay out an obscene amiy t if fruit and proceed to sit there and eat for the next hour that isn't OK.

Redpriestandmozart · 25/06/2018 09:59

I'm vegan, when going out for coffee with friends I carry a small flask of soy milk, couple of nakd bars and fruit, usually a banana or apple. I let my friends chose the cafe as they like cake. I ask if they do soy milk if they do I order a soy latte, I ask if any food is vegan if there is something I buy it. If cafe has no soy milk or vegan food I order an Americano and have no shame using my own soy and eating what I have brought with me.

I'm with friends who buy fancy coffee and lots of cake, I will buy the coffee but if there is nothing for me to eat I refuse to starve. I've never been challenged but neither do I flaunt my contraband.

Helmetbymidnight · 25/06/2018 10:00

For your 2 yr old, ok.

For you? Really?

MrsSteptoe · 25/06/2018 10:01

Hmmmm. On the face of it, I guess it shouldn't matter, but I can't help wondering: if all customers bought a drink (thus entitling them to a nice sit-down on the cafe chairs) and then produced a picnic, would the cafe stay in business? I think not. They rely on a proportion of customers needing to eat, so I think it's only fair to at least combine your own food with some of theirs. I wouldn't lose sleep over it though.

Thingsthatgo · 25/06/2018 10:01

Yeah, I’d think that rude.

SD1978 · 25/06/2018 10:05

As an adult, can you not just eat before or after the drink in the cafe? Or check out cafes in your area that cater to you? I’m sorry- it seems a tad pathetic that you (and a few others) have to have a packed snack like a toddler. I understand that you want to go out, and have a right to- but you can surely juts order something compliant and eat before or after? Every cafe I’ve ever seen supplies soy milk (another responder) I don’t understand taking your own- almost seems more like point making than need.

shiklah · 25/06/2018 10:05

You should take your coffee out and eat and drink not in the cafe. People bringing their own food into cafes isn't ok!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 25/06/2018 10:06

How rude! Why would you think it's acceptable?
If you don't like the menu, but a take-away drink there and go and have a picnic somewhere else.

Most cafes even if they sell fruit only have bananas apples or oranges which I’m not that fond of too bad, go to a cafe that serves the fruits you like, or to a smoothie bar, or to a supermarket.

This attitude is a lot more reasonable:
I ask if any food is vegan if there is something I buy it. If cafe has no soy milk or vegan food I order an Americano and have no shame using my own soy and eating what I have brought with me.
Many people with food allergies will do the same.

Goodness, for some people it would appear going to a cafe is something of an ordeal. I sometimes wonder how some people cope in day to day life. Eat your fruit and enjoy your coffee.

Hoppinggreen · 25/06/2018 10:11

Cheeky and rude
You aren’t a toddler who is going to have a meltdown if you get hungry
If there is nothing you can eat due to allergies then it’s a bit different but if you are choosing not to eat what’s on offer then sit there with a water ( you have paid for) or don’t go

icelollycraving · 25/06/2018 10:14

I think it’s rude. A pouch for a baby totally fine, food for you not so much.

fruitbrewhaha · 25/06/2018 10:15

YABU

The café is there to make money, not provide you with a public service.

LARLARLAND · 25/06/2018 10:15

My friends own a cafe and it's really hard work for not a lot of reward. I feel sorry for them when I read threads like this.
