To take fruit to a coffee shop

The taking your own tea bag thread reminded me
Would you think I was a CF for taking my own food (usually fruit) to a Cafe or coffee shop
I always buy a drink and if it’s vaguely early enough porridge but I usually take a box of strawberries or raspberries, or something like plums or apricots
I’m on a diet and have lots of food allergies so am pretty limited to what I can eat anyway
Most cafes even if they sell fruit only have bananas apples or oranges which I’m not that fond of

Cafe owners also sometimes have the waste they dispose of weighed and are charged per load to dispose of so all those peelings and banana skins are costing them too.
As others have said... eat it before or after...and don't leave your rubbish behind.

LighthouseSouth · 25/06/2018 13:09

OP I'm confused

are you meeting friends?

I don't go to coffee shops. I have nowhere to eat lunch at work either except my desk, but I think it would be damn rude to go to a coffee shop, buy a coffee and eat my own snack.

JessieMcJessie · 25/06/2018 13:10

IfonlyUs I was coming on to say exactly that! At a push possibly a banana goes OK with a coffee but the combo of an acidic fruit like a plum or a berry or an orange plus a cup of coffee sounds rank to me.

By the way OP the dried apricots that you want in your porridge would still be a hefty dose of sugar, not a million miles better than honey or Nutella.

I just grabbed a take away from my friend who has a local cafe and told her about this thread. She says that adults bringing food is the bane of her life. Costa and the like may chose to turn a blind eye but she asks people to leave now, having been exasperated by growing picnics and really cheeky behaviour. Her worst recent example was a man who brought a meat and potato pie from the bakery next door in with him, ordered a cup of tea (£1.50) and then asked her for a plate, knife and fork so he could cut the pie for his DS to eat. She told him he couldn't eat his own food in there and was told that children food is fine - she must expect it. She pointed out she served pies and was told
"Yes, but yours are £3.90 and the bakery sells them for £2"

He literally stop there and argued with her before storming out telling her "You haven't heard the last of this"

WTF is the matter with people?

They are supremely entitled and confuse cafes with picnic areas. Nice, warm picnic areas. Perfect for winter when you fancy a touch of cheeky fuckery at the expense of someone trying to run a business.

TheAntiBoop · 25/06/2018 13:42

She should have charged him£2.40 for use of the plate etc!

It reminds me of th scene in fleabag where the guy comes in and plugs in about 6 different things to charge and when she asks if he wants a drink he says 'no thanks' and gets on with his work!!

I've noticed a lot of cafes/restaurants in National Trust properties and stately homes have signs up saying that food bought off premises is not permitted, probably for this very reason.

SilverySurfer · 25/06/2018 16:41

I'm bemused by those who think it's fine providing you buy a coffee - like that's going to make the cafe so much profit (not). No wonder so many cafes are closing down. It would never enter my head to even contemplate doing it.

Andylion · 25/06/2018 16:46

Not rude if you mean Costa.

My branch (a very large one) has loads of food available, but zero fruit options. You'd think there would be post of grapes, melon etc etc. Nope. Nothing.

So yes I do take my own fruit.

Why go to Costa if you want fruit?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 25/06/2018 16:50

If someone is on a diet and only drinking coffee they'd not be buying anything else anyway.

MrsPreston11 · 25/06/2018 19:18

Andylion.

I have fruit for breakfast.

I like a coffee with it too.

Was it really so hard to fathom that I go to costa because I want a coffee?

TheFlame · 25/06/2018 19:36

do the people who want something different actually tell the cafes that? they can't guess that the reason you don't buy cake is because you want a specific other thing. So if you would like a berry pot, or apricots on your porridge or whatever tell them that - do a feedback form or send an email or something. If they know there is demand for a specific thing they may start selling it.

adaline · 25/06/2018 19:46

That's fine, but then don't be a cheeky fucker and take your own food with you!

shiklah · 25/06/2018 19:55

Those who do take their own food to cafes - would you expect to do the same at a restaurant or pub? Buy a drink and eat your own food?

DuchyDuke · 25/06/2018 20:05

Most cafes sell fruit though.

SharronNeedles · 25/06/2018 21:16

Let's say everyone does this, then suddenly the lovely little cafe can't make ends meet. It really isn't difficult to imagine this, it's happening before our eyes!
If you want more fruit to be available, have you tried emailing the chain/shop to suggest it?
Also, most places do the granola yogurt pots...I don't think I've been in a cafe that doesn't offer that in the morning.

Unless it's a meal time, why can't you contain your hunger? Makes me think you have an eating problem if you have to have food around you at all times. Breakfast you can eat at home/on the go/in your hotel room/at your desk/staff break room etc.

Sparklingbrook · 25/06/2018 21:20

YY bleurgh to eating fruit together with drinking coffee.

IrmaFayLear · 26/06/2018 13:42

Yes, SharronNeedles. My mantra is "What if everyone did this?"

Just look at current threads - CFs avoiding buying their round (when accepting drinks from everyone else), or CFs wanting to bring their own tea into cafes, etc etc etc.

Some years ago there was a thread about people eating in the theatre. Not the cinema. The theatre . And some posters thought it was acceptable! As if they'd die of starvation if they didn't eat for a couple of hours...

purplelass · 26/06/2018 13:53

I'm on a low carb diet, so wouldn't want fruit either.

How's about if I take my camping stove in and cook up some eggs and bacon? No?
