Wibu to wear these to a job interview?

sharkirasharkira · 25/06/2018 08:44

I have an interview this morning for a reasonably casual job (ie; working in a shop).

It is hot and all my 'go to' interview clothes are black/dark colours and heavy fabrics which I just can't bear wearing in this heat!

My options are:

Light blue wide leg linen trousers, which are lovely and light but slightly creased and very 'casual' looking.

Smart dark blue skinny jeans, which are much more 'professional' looking but will be a lot hotter and heavier as they are fitted and denim.

Wibu to wear either of these?

Fwiw I don't own an iron so I can't iron the linen ones, they aren't badly creased but it's obvious they aren't perfectly smooth either. What should I do!

I wouldn't wear jeans to an interview personally.

Stephisaur · 25/06/2018 08:48

The linen trousers sound nice :) I would be unlikely to notice creases as linen tends to crease as soon as you put it on anyway!

You could steam them in the bathroom though, which might help.

EmmaC78 · 25/06/2018 08:48

I would just wear the dark colours. An interview for a casual job won't last for long so I would just grin and bear it for a short time. I think jeans are a no for interviews and the other option sounds to casual.

TheOrigFV45 · 25/06/2018 08:49

TBH, I wouldn't wear either of those. Is it possible to put your normal interview clothes on shortly before the actual interview?

How heavy are we talking? If you are job hunting it might be worth investing in some standard office black trousers and a nice shirt/blouse.

Good luck.

I wouldn't wear jeans to a job interview.

Can you wear a dress and a smart jacket or cardigan?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 25/06/2018 08:51

I'm conflicted.

Jeans to an interview - no
Unironed clothes at an interview - no

I can't believe you don't even own an iron!! Could you borrow a neighbour's. I iron my son's white school shirts and that is it; except for weddings, interviews and Hama beads!

For interviews, whatever the job, I think the same is appropriate. Work formal, smart, clean and ironed.

I don't believe the jeans will be appropriate, even if ironed, but the linen trousers would be, if ironed!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 25/06/2018 08:52

Ooh just re-read. Wear neither. Wear the go-tos. You can always drive home in your pants

silverpenguin · 25/06/2018 08:52

I'd go for the interview clothes, whatever is coolest, and change immediately afterwards!

WhatchaMaCalllit · 25/06/2018 08:57

My advice - wear your normal interview clothes and neither of these options (linen/jeans). Take a blazer/jacket with you but wear a blouse and suit trousers and for the hour or so, put up with the heat.

sharkirasharkira · 25/06/2018 08:57

I have never really owned one, life is just too short to iron things! Fortunately my go to stuff is the kind of fabric that doesn't really crease so it's usually fine.

I have put on a bit of weight since the last time I wore them so I don't think the go to stuff will fit me very well but I may just have to squeeze my muffin top into them Sad

I don't have any smart dresses, jackets or cardigans! All my dresses are either summery or going out.

yes I agree, you need to wear the interview clothes.

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

WingsOnMyBoots · 25/06/2018 09:07

Definitely NO to jeans for an interview. But I'm with you - I wouldn't wear dark, heavy clothes either. The blue trousers sound lovely but would be better if they were ironed. If you can't get new ones I would borrow an iron. Seriously, unironed clothes do not give a good impression.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/06/2018 09:07

Wear your go to clothes or failing that the linen trousers. Try to borrow an iron from a neighbour and tell them yours packed up if you think you’ll be judged.

Tinkobell · 25/06/2018 09:09

If you want the job I'd either buy an iron for the trousers or pay a fee quid for a dry cleaning press of them or I'd buy some cheap smart clothes - primark, matalan or George. Presumably the job will pay you over a hundred quid a week? We're talking no more than £40 at most to improve your attire to get that job.

MeMyShelfandIkea · 25/06/2018 09:13

Definitely not the jeans.

Good luck with the interview!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 25/06/2018 09:19

Personally I wouldn't wear either as they sound too casual, but I guess it depends on what you'd be wearing to do the job, if that makes sense?!

Di11y · 25/06/2018 09:19

Could you not wear a summery dress and cardigan or jacket?

Jessbow · 25/06/2018 09:21

I'd have thought, for a job in shop interview, a summer dress would be appropriate. Something smart, but not over the top, with your shoulders covered ( ie not a sun dress)

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 25/06/2018 09:26

Can you get to a shop OP? Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s or asda?

They do very reasonable works wear and if you don’t want to buy any new Work wear pick up a £10 iron and wear the blue trousers.

NaturalBornWoman · 25/06/2018 09:45

I don't have any smart dresses, jackets or cardigans! All my dresses are either summery or going out.

What would you normally wear to work in the summer if you don't have any suitable summer work clothes?

WhatchaMaCalllit · 25/06/2018 09:51

When is the interview OP?
Would you have time to pick up something new to wear? I really wouldn't recommend the items you've mentioned and if you haven't anything that fits, perhaps now is as good a time as any to pick up one or two pieces that will fit you and wear well into work.

OuchLegoHurts · 25/06/2018 09:52

Wear your interview clothes and just put up with the heat for a while... Worth it for a job!

midnight1983 · 25/06/2018 09:57

I have interviewed and hired many people to work in a shop and I would really take a dim view of jeans to an interview, unless it's a denim brand.

Johnnyfinland · 25/06/2018 10:01

Depending on what kind of shop it is will influence what you wear. For instance, I have worked in a high-street clothes shop, and people who turned up looking trendy (including jeans) for interviews were definitely favoured. In fact I remember someone NOT being offered the job once because they wore a suit and it was completely at odds with what you'd wear to work there. I now work in an office but in an industry with no dress code so I don't own any smart work clothes, I don't think that's unusual. I've worn jeans to job interviews many times in my current industry and 90% of the time I've got the job. if it's a clothes shop I think the jeans and a floaty shop would be fine. If it's a big supermarket probably go with more traditional interview wear

Bobbiepin · 25/06/2018 10:11

Can you iron the trousers with hair srraighteners?
