Who is right here? (clue, it is me!)

MNers, please settle a (lighthearted!) argument by saying I am right obvs Grin

DH have a thing where if we are watching a film or hear a song we each guess which year it was from and whoever is closest "wins" (I can't believe I'm actually writing this Blush)

Currently watching Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (even more embarrassing BlushGrin). DH said 1986. I guessed it was made in 1991. (DH insists that I add here he then said "no it was the 80s"...)

So who was closer? I maintain I am as I was two years away whilst DH was three years away. He maintains he is right as he said 80s whilst I said a date in the 90s.

So settle argument for us, please. We are currently not being excellent to each other Grin

Just here to join in with the Bill & Ted love. I must have seen in a hundred times (no, really - maybe even more Blush) as my best friend and I were obsessed with it as children and early teens. We know it word for word. Can't wait for the new one. Keanu and Alex are truly good dudes.

DHIsClearlyWrong · 24/06/2018 21:42

And I've told him he is disqualified. He is still burbling on about everyone knows it's a classic 80s film, it's not a 90s film. I'm biting my tongue as I genuinely think of Bill and Ted as a 90s film despite being made it 1989. I daren't start Round Two though

I don't actually know why we have so many silly "in joke" games when we are both such terrible losers HmmGrin We have been playing a particular one where the winner is the first person to say a certain word (too embarrassing to say what word Wink) when the lights are turned out in bed. I can't remember how it started but I'm sure we agreed after I won the first few times to do best out of seven (ie play it for a week). Do you know how long we have been playing it?

Eighteen fucking years.

We even do it by telephone/text if we aren't together at bedtime. Good job I NCed for this thread BlushGrin

I've overshared, haven't I ShockGrin

OP that is flippin' adorable. Although DH and I play a similar silly game at bedtime and if it's still going on in 18 years I might go batty. Grin

Learn from my mistakes peach

Seriously though, we do laugh a lot so maybe it's not a bad thing Smile

Just to make you feel even better, OP, "read TWFT" made perfect sense: "read the whole f'in thread". You're right even when you DON'T know it!

DiegoMadonna · 25/06/2018 01:35

You're both right. Your guess was closer, but he said it was defo an 80s film and he's right, it was.

It's the taking part that counts.

CharlotteFlax · 25/06/2018 02:08

Dudes, the film may have been made in 1989 but in the UK I bet we didn't even get to see it in cinemas till late 1990/1991 so in our minds it WILL be a 1990s film. So OP is doubly right.

Party on.

(Off to google release dates)

ElementalHalfLife · 25/06/2018 02:10

Weeeeell now in my capacity as World Champion Puzzling Maestra Extraordinare (hey Sporcle says I'm a fucking logic problem solving genius or words to that effect so do one, ok?) I have rtft considered all possible outcomes of this conundrum and, while it was close, very close, I have come down on the side of the OP and return a verdict in her favour. For those questioning my decision do one I would refer you to the title of the thread and the all important word clue . Game changer. Clearly one would be beyond unreasonable to ignore a handy clue! In this case the clue states quite unarguably that 'it is me' and, therefore, since 'me' is the OP the OP is right.

CharlotteFlax · 25/06/2018 02:11

OK, have googled and I'm wrong about the release dates (UK release August 1989) but Bogus Journey is definitely pure 90s.

DHIsClearlyWrong · 25/06/2018 07:53

Well you will all be pleased to know we are still arguing debating this since 6am Hmm Charlotte I applied your impeccable logic (whilst totally ignoring your second post Wink) and it was refuted thusly:

DH "Ok so if my child was born in 1989 but I didn't get to see him until 1990, would his age be calculated from 1990 then? does that work then? I don't fucking think so"

I feel he is now taking this far too seriously plus his logic in comparing Bill and Ted to the birth of a child is sadly lacking Grin Hostilities have been suspended for a while however as he has just brought me a cup of tea in bed.

I think it will be a while before we play this game again Grin

Saying "it was in the 80s" was an observation which does not count as an entry into the competition. His actual guess was 1986 which was 2 years out rather than 3.

What you are asking for here is a ruling of whether, in the absence of either of you getting it right, the secondary criterion should be "correct decade" vs "number of years away".

That's a ruling I think you really need to negotiate between the two of you forgetting this specific example and thinking about the overall game from week to week. It is equally legitimate to use either.

For me, I would go for "number of years away" because I don't think that culture changes bang on schedule when 31st December of a year ending in 9 becomes 1st January of a year ending 0. However that doesn't make this "correct" - just the house-rule I would favour personally.

Imchlibob · 25/06/2018 08:13

Sorry I mistyped "3 years out rather than 2" - apologies for the maths-incompetence.

A secondary ruling would also be required if the year he had chosen was 1987 - if you were both 2 years out then what would the tie-breaker be? Does decade hold weight then or does the actual month of release matter?

TheOriginalSource · 25/06/2018 08:38

If closest wins you win because you are closer. Saying "definitely 80's" after you guessed doesn't make being 3 years out closer than being 2 years out.

ApocalypseNowt · 25/06/2018 10:33

As there was no year '0' technically 1990 is the 80's...

Your answer is still the rightest though OP

Grin
FreezerBird · 25/06/2018 10:41

Were you playing 'guess the decade'?

No you were not.

You are right.

Imchlibob · 25/06/2018 22:43

As there was no year '0' technically 1990 is the 80's...

Don't be ridiculous. You know no one at all ever actually thinks that a new decade starts in XXX1, nor a new millenium either. It doesn't matter that some bloke when originally calculating when BC became AD missed out zero - a new decade/century/millennium starts whenyou get that lovely line of zeros on a digital clock/calendar.

ApocalypseNowt · 26/06/2018 06:25

@Imchlibob You do realise I was joking....as this seemed to be light hearted thread?Hmm

I solemnly promise never to be flippant about decades again Confused

DHIsClearlyWrong · 26/06/2018 11:39

Imchlibob I like how seriously you are taking this subject Smile I should introduce you to DH. I think you would get on fabulously Grin

Thanks everyone for saying I am right taking time to post. Last night DH and I veered dangerously close to trying to guess the year of Con Air (as part of an interesting discussion about Nicholas Cage, it's all go in our house HmmGrin) but thankfully we caught each other's eyes and avoided it. Phew Wink
