To wonder how you'll spend summer holidays

dingodollarman · 24/06/2018 09:07

As in the 6 weeks summer holidays with your children (I'm not assuming you all have 6 weeks off).

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 24/06/2018 09:11

There's one week with an activity camp for 2 of 3. Other than that, nothing is booked.

We're talking about a last minute holiday booking, but have yet to agree on anything we all like (or at least don't hate) the sound of. And will probably go on a longish visit to each set of DGPs.

As they're teens, I don't need to supervise them or arrange childcare any more (hooray!) but I think I need to put some attention into making a list of 'days out and things to do' for when the unenterprising slug factor is taking hold too strongly.

EatRepeatEatRepeat · 24/06/2018 09:18

We have 8 and a half weeks off Shock 2 weeks away, I’m working for a bit of it so they will have a few days in summer clubs but also working from home too so the kids will chill out at home those days. 2 of my dc are also old enough to arrange stuff with their friends.
Then 3 or 4 roadtrips to visit family and friends around the country. DH is only off for our 2 weeks away do it’s mainly me and dc. I know I’m lucky to have time off and work flexibility.

glenthebattleostrich · 24/06/2018 09:22

I'm a childminder so will have all my littles as well as DD.

We are looking at animals so lots of lovely days out, crafts, baking and just playing outside. Hopefully the weather will hold and we can actually enjoy summer this year. Last year was awful, rain and lots of softplay and cinema and other inside places :(

Our weekends will be camping and visiting family and friends.

Last 2 weeks I'm off work so lovely relaxing time with my DD. And trying to fit in a city break for my 40th with DH and DD.

FiestyCherry · 24/06/2018 09:22

Balancing child care between me, DH and my parents - very lucky that my work let me flex my hours over the holidays so I do longer days when DS is with DH meaning I can have at least a day a week off and we have 1 week away booked - DS is in year 2 and for some reason this summer has been the easiest to organise .

Wishiwasonholiday1 · 24/06/2018 10:23

I'm a teacher and I get 8 weeks off but currently in final stages of part time PhD so first week children will go to grandparents, next 2 weeks the 20 month old is with a childminder and 6year old at the school's holiday camp while I write. Next 2 weeks family holiday in France and after that me for final 2 weeks taking them on lots of park trips!
I sympathise with those who don't get the summer off, childcare must be a nightmare.

wegweiser · 24/06/2018 10:29

Mine have a week with in laws then 3 weeks at holiday club (half days on mon and fri as DH and I have changed our hours to pick up early). And then two weeks off all together. Have planned to go to Bournemouth for 3 days, but rest of time will do lots of day trips and meet up with friends. Wish in-laws lived closer and could have a couple of days each week instead to break up the hols as a week is a long time for them and dc!

limon · 24/06/2018 10:31

I've booked a day off each week and a week off at end of August.

operaha · 24/06/2018 10:35

Mine are all older now, only the nearly 13 year old at home. So, a camping trip to the lake district, then he goes on holiday with his dad whilst I go to Munich with friends, then at the end of August I'm taking him on a UK city break, Chester, York or Bath, not sure yet. I have a school job so off most of the summer. He'll be out with his mates most of the time, it's gonna be weird!

Rainbowblume · 24/06/2018 10:39

4 weeks day care closue. 1 week at home with baby sitter and nanny and in laws covering
We will work. 1 week camping nearby we will be off. 1 week in a b 'n b on a farm also nearby we will be off. 1 week my parents and baby sitter covering and we are back at work.

Matilda15 · 24/06/2018 10:41

This summer holidays is a nightmare for us. We aren’t going away as we went away at Easter and are going away October Half term. This year is the first year my Mum hasn’t worked in a school and no longer has the holidays off so that’s a week down, plus DS Dad passed away this year and he would always have a week as well.

So DS is doing 3 weeks of holiday club, 1 week with us, 1 week with his grandad and 1 week still to figure out. I feel dreadful that it isn’t going to be more fun for him but we’ve picked some different clubs so he’ll have some variety at least.

catinasplashofsunshine · 24/06/2018 10:50

D1: I'm Dc1 to Paris for 3 nights at the beginning, dfil is taking her to Croatia to visit family after that, then she and dc2 are going on a camping trip thing with the volunteer fire brigade, at the end of the holidays were going on a family holiday in the UK.

Dc2: various 1 day or part day activities with the local holiday program organised by the council and local organisations, clubs and groups. The camping trip and family holiday, plus while dc1 is in Croatia I have a few days off when we'll do something special - we have some 50% off theme park vouchers we'll use.

Dc3 as dc2 but no camping trip, but he's already had a trip to London with me. While big 2 go camping he'll have his best friend over to camp in the garden.

We get free use of my employer's outdoor pool all summer so will go swimming whenever we have time and it's warm enough. Hoping to get dc3's swimming stamina up a bit as school require them to be able to swim 50 meters before they'll take them swimming next summer - if he can't do that by the end of the summer we will have to send him to lessons from October which he doesn't want to do.

I'm working short weekday shifts and long weekend shifts during the holidays so the kids will sometimes be left alone but only in the mornings, when they'll be in bed then have screen time or play indoors til I get home before 11am (I start work at 6am) and DH will be with them at weekends. We're both also taking holiday for the family holiday plus a few separate extra days.

It's not bad - dc1 probably has too much planned but does have downtime in there too.

PassportMessUp · 24/06/2018 10:56

I was suppose to take the children to see there grand parents but the passport office are refusing to issue ds2 age 5 a passport due to security concerns Hmm So I have no idea for the most part tbh.

Although we are seeing my mum in Dorset for a week.

catinasplashofsunshine · 24/06/2018 10:59

Passport what? Going on your user name I assume you have a separate thread about that? Hasn't he had a passport until now, even though one set of grandparents live overseas?

PumpkinPie2016 · 24/06/2018 11:01

I am exceptionally lucky that I am a teacher and will therefore be off for the 6 weeks with DS. I genuinely feel for those who have to juggle childcare - it must be a nightmare!

For us, we are in Cornwall for the first two weeks which will be nice.

Third week, DS is having a swimming lesson each morning and then we will probably chill at home/in the garden in the afternoons.

One day will be taken up buying school uniform as he starts reception this year.

Other than that we will be making use of local parks/bridle ways for walks, or own garden, local gallery has activities so will go to some of those, possibly a train trip to the nearest city. Otherwise, we will chill at home.

Term time is absolutely hectic so will be glad of some downtime.

MissBartlettsconscience · 24/06/2018 11:06

1 week with Pils
2 week's family holiday
3 week's camps of various sorts - sailing, multi sport and drama which cover my working hours.

iklboo · 24/06/2018 11:07

Mostly working. DS is 12 but we are so, so lucky (and thankful) that our parents love to have him.

3boysandabump · 24/06/2018 11:08

I go on maternity leave in 1 week. Perfect timing. Dh has 2 weeks paternity and 2 weeks annual leave as well. So if all goes to plan I'll have the first 2 weeks on my own still pregnant and managing to entertain the dc. Then ds4 will arrive and dh will be off until they go back to school. That's the plan anyway...

blackteasplease · 24/06/2018 11:09

I wish I could have6 weeks off!

madmomma · 24/06/2018 11:09

Lots of picnics in parks, bike rides, trampolining cos they have cheap passes, swimming when I can bear it, playdates, cooking, a holiday, camping, crappy TV, making a mess in the garden, helping with housework, hopefully some reading, maths and spelling practice (although that depends on me getting into a holiday routine of it). General slobbing around will feature a lot too.

Longdistance · 24/06/2018 11:13

Those 5 years can be dangerous Passport

I work in a prep school, so finish earlier than my dds. I’m having a week to myself, a bit of pampering is needed, and I’ve ordered a new flash car, so will hopefully be picking that up.

The first week we’ll be home as my dfs 1st anniversary of his passing, so I want to be around for that. Then heading to mil’s where dds will be horse riding, outdoor museum, beach, air show.

We’ll be going to London and Brighton in between, and probably another seaside location.

Then we’re off on a road trip to France, with Disneyland Paris thrown in.

We come back, and haven’t planned anything, but may book a last minute somewhere. We also have Horrible Histories to go to. I have to be back at work early September, so they may be going back to mils.

Adversecamber22 · 24/06/2018 11:14

DS is a aisth former and is off to three weekend cadet camps, we are going on a cruise for two weeks and he will also be working in a pub kitchen some days.

When he was little we always had a two week holiday and he would go in to a play scheme for the rest of the hols. Apart from one year when he was twelve and I managed to negotiate a month off and we travelled round America for a month visiting two lots of relatives and lots of other places.

midnightmisssuki · 24/06/2018 11:19

We have about 8 weeks off too Confused. I’ll be taking leave here and there. Summer holiday camp, drama and tennis lessons for my daughter and my nanny has my son, dh is off to NY and Middle East for work so we might join him there for a week or so, at the end of it we will take a family trip to Tenerife, managed to find a hotel with an awesome kids club!

NotEnoughTime · 24/06/2018 20:16

My summer will be a mixture of working and holidays and taking the DC on days out-either locally or further afield.

I love spending time with my DC but it can be a bit tricky sometimes as there is a five year age gap between them and so it is unlikely that they both enjoy doing the same thing.

I also hope the weather is good as I find that makes a huge difference and also not running out of money helps too Grin

Allthepinkunicorns · 24/06/2018 20:38

My ds will be going to summer clubs two days a week so I can work. Every Wednesday we are going on a day out/ doing an activity. so far I've booked the lego discovery centre in Birmingham and a workshop at the Emma Bridgewater factory. I'm sure we will have a few trips to the beach depending on the weather. Many many trips to the park and soft play. My ds loves the kids clubs at the cinema so we will be going those every couple of weeks, as they are nice and cheap. A few play dates. We also go to Disneyland Paris the last week of August. So lots of things to keep him busy.

SeriousSimon · 24/06/2018 20:42

Last two weeks of August off - nothing planned, can't afford a holiday this year as we're moving. So it will be days out, swimming, parks, bike rides, camping.

For the first four weeks the dc are at the cms two days and for the other 5 will be more of the same.
