Lip piercing

Anyone had it done? I'm considering getting a lip and nose ringSmile

What are your reasons for wanting it done?

My friend had a lip piercing (just under her lip) and it eroded part of her gum!

Nose rings and lip piercings make me feel sick when I'm talking to someone who is wearing them. They just look so sore and unhygienic!

JacquesHammer · 24/06/2018 19:35

They just look so sore

What makes you think they look sore? Just after piercing, sure, there’ll be some redness. Otherwise doesn’t look any difference to an ear piercing surely?

Because they're in very delicate mucous membranes, with lots of nerve endings. And exposed to lots of bacteria in the mouth and nose. Lip piercings come into contact with food, make up etc. Don't they catch on things when you eat/kiss/blow your nose etc? Perhaps they're not at all painful and it's all in my head? It just seems strange to decorate a very functional part of your body by piercing it, exposing yourself to infections and injury.

Ear lobes are different, they're dry and don't have any function.

Lip and nose piercings are also very visible as they're in the centre of the face, they catch the eye when you talk to someone in a way ear piercings don't.

Didn’t hurt when I had it done. Doesn’t hurt when I blow my nose. Doesn’t catch on anything.

Don’t have my lip done but have a tongue piercing, that doesn’t catch when I eat or kiss. And I would know as I regularly kiss someone who has his tongue pierced.

Neither have been infected.

I think the risk of injury is minimal for nose piercings if you wear certain jewellery. So I have a tiny stud on a wire, which if caught would simply slide out. Far more risk to my ears probably, as I wear BCR in most of those holes.

BitchQueen90 · 24/06/2018 19:54

To be fair I did used to have a nose piercing and one of the reasons I took it out was because it was always getting caught on the towel when I was drying my hair.

I also have a tongue piercing and I have never had any issues with it at all. Wtf is "icky time" Hmm

I've got nipple piercings. Now THEY are painful when they catch on things Grin

Becca83 · 24/06/2018 20:25

Don't do it!! I'm left with a scar that won't fade and irreversible gum damage. I would swear anyone off it for the dental issues alone.

BeautyBox · 24/06/2018 20:29

I had my lower lip pierced in the middle and to one side when I was in my late teens. Took them out in my mid twenties as I was getting started in my career and although it wasn't a career that would have been impacted by them (actually, a bit of an individual image was everything) I was concerned it might affect first impressions.

Piercinglip · 24/06/2018 21:31

Ouch! Nipple and tongue piercing, couldn't do it. But admire people who've been brave to have it done Smile

@RoseWhiteTips Why exactly are you on this thread?Hmm

Had my nose done for 13 years, don't even need to wear jewellery on a daily basis and it's not noticeable when I go without.
Also have 3 lip piercings, lower lip. They do leave an obvious mark. I love them, but I'd definitely advise changing to a bioplast bar as soon as you can because they can recede your gums quite severely.
Pearl clutchers, you're probably not the target audience here Grin

JacquesHammer · 25/06/2018 10:43

@Piercinglip

This is what said poster does. Without fail watches for threads to come on and say how awful piercings and tattoos are and how you’ll never amount to anything Wink

LeahJack · 25/06/2018 10:51

Don’t, don’t get it done. It has left me with a very noticeable scar and the inside of my lip split. If you decide to take it out (and almost everybody does at some point) you really will have a deep pit just under your lip. It looks like a permanent pimple. Have other piercings which I’ve never regretted but that one I do.

JacquesHammer · 25/06/2018 10:52

you really will have a deep pit just under your lip

You might of course but it isn’t a given. Just person dependant.

RoseWhiteTips · 25/06/2018 10:56

They just look so sore and unhygienic!

Yep. It begs the question why people do this? What is the purpose? What is the point?
Most people who are unadorned by piercings and leftover holes must be baffled. So why doesn’t someone offer a meaningful answer?

BeautyBox · 25/06/2018 10:59

@RoseWhiteTips - why does anyone choose one outfit over another? Why does someone choose to have a certain hairstyle? Wear make up? It's just another choice someone makes about their appearance.

RoseWhiteTips · 25/06/2018 10:59

Receding gums? Permanent pimples? Split lips? Noticeable scar?

Surely those are not what you desire and none of the above will give you any validity at all.

RoseWhiteTips · 25/06/2018 11:01

Yes, I get that you are making a choice. But what does this SAY about you? It sure as heck doesn’t enhance your appearance.

BeautyBox · 25/06/2018 11:18

Receding gums? Permanent pimples? Split lips? Noticeable scar?

@RoseWhiteTips

I have had two lip piercings and have been left with none of these things. These are really extreme. I have a tiny pinprick scar where the piercings were that I can see when get close up to a mirror and push the skin out with my tongue. A lot of people I used to hang about with have had piercings - my DH has his eyebrow pierced once upon a time (!) - and I don't know anyone who has suffered from permanent disfigurement or noticeable scars.

I have worse marks from nicking my skin while shaving my legs but I still do that almost daily!

BeautyBox · 25/06/2018 11:19

And you might not think it enhances someone's appearance but anyone who chooses to have it done disagrees, clearly.

JacquesHammer · 25/06/2018 12:11

Most people who are unadorned by piercings and leftover holes must be baffled

Are they? Is there a lack of critical thinking ability amongst the non-pierced.

So why doesn’t someone offer a meaningful answer?

People do, you just choose not to bother to acknowledge.

Just for clarity though. I have piercings because I like the look, I enjoy changing my jewellery. I have no lasting issues and in fact those that I no longer have jewellery in you can't tell there was a piercing.

Why is there such difficulty in understanding people enjoy different things?!

JacquesHammer · 25/06/2018 12:11

I have worse marks from nicking my skin while shaving my legs

I cut myself shaving for the first time in years the same day as I had my most recent tattoo. The shaving cut took longer to heal and hurt more Grin

RoseWhiteTips · 25/06/2018 15:04

So piercings are jewellery. Riiight.

MariaMadita · 25/06/2018 15:09

It took a very long time for my ears to heal and it hurt a lot. (The family doctor recommended to take them out but I was apparently a very very stubborn and surprisingly convincing girl...)

So no, I'd never get my lips pierced. The idea of having something this (temporarily...) Unsightly on my face? If I were to have the same issues than I did with my ears...

No way.

JacquesHammer · 25/06/2018 15:10

So piercings are jewellery. Riiight

I didn't say they were. Piercings are the holes, the jewellery is what I change.

Golly there's some hard of thinking folk on MN today.

Given the definition of jewellery is personal ornaments I think we're good with my original comments that I like to change the jewellery. Riiiiiiiight? Grin

MariaMadita · 25/06/2018 15:11

Anyhowy, aesthetically? Nose rings look cute and sometime genuinely beautiful imo.

Lip rings aren't my cup of tea.

But it's your body/your face.

If you like how it looks/want it for other reasons? Why not..

eyycarumba · 25/06/2018 15:38

Had mine done several times.

Didn't hurt to have done, but can be frozen if requested. Had both ends of the spectrum whilst healing, usually went well but the one was horrific and took months longer than it should have - I changed the bar to a ring too soon. Do not scrimp on the cleaning. I did chew the bars, they can cause teeth/gum erosion and I've also swallowed a couple of bars when the ball fell off whilst eating. I've had them out for almost 10 years now, still have pin prick scars
