To think Sketchers should give me my money back!?

If the shoes are not fit for purpose - because they fucking stink!?!

Bought a pair of Go Walk to wear to work (pastoral role in secondary school, lots of running and dress code means no trainers etc. so thought they'd be ideal) and whilst I admit they're super comfy they stink after about 3 wears! Never had a foot odor problem and all my other shoes are fine, even beach trainers that get soaked and are frequently worn with no socks etc.

DH googled - yes, it's that bad! 😳 (DD, 5, says they smell like the cat weed in them... She has a point..!) - and it's a common complaint with these shoes. Forums full of wearers saying thank God, thought it was just me, etc. I'm fuming. So are my shoes. Noxious fuming.

I bought them for work. I cannot reak at work. Duh. Valid complaint and refund request or AIBU? Over to you, Mumsnet...

Stick them in the washing machine and then don’t wear them without socks.

I read somewhere that you should never wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row so that they have time to dry out and air.

Loonoon · 23/06/2018 15:16

Skechers do get stinky. If you don’t want to wear some sort of trainer liner (I don’t because they slip around and aren’t comfortable which defeats the purpose of wearing Skechers) I find the only way to keep them fresh is to buy more than one pair and alternate them. Also put them through the machine in a lingerie bag occasionally. Then you shouldn’t reek at work or at home.

SluttyButty · 23/06/2018 15:16

I wear those teeny socks from M&S with mine, they don't show at all but keep the smells away. Chuck them in the machine every so often too.

Apanicaday · 23/06/2018 15:17

My first pair of go walks I wore without socks and had exactly the same problem (I ended up leaving them with bicarb in overnight and then machine washing them which seemed to help a bit. I got a new pair recently for a job where I'm on my feet full time but this time I've always worn socks with them and they haven't smelt at all. Sadly I think they are shoes that can't cope with unsocked feet. Not sure you would get any money back but it's worth a go!

ChristinaMarlowe · 23/06/2018 15:21

Sorry for confusion - I wear then with those ankle/knee-high pop socks (yeah I'm that trendy Blush) depending on trouser length and alternate with high heels and summer sandals. Never wear them more than 1-2 days in a row along with airing them out in the garden! Just seems ridiculous as its the only shoes it has happened with and all the other people DH found that said the same thing made me more cross!

Think I'll try the teeny socks idea - doesn't help that I got ones that show a lot of foot (weirdest sentence I've used for a while...!)

Mine used to stink until I got those tiny sock things from Skechers to go with them. Now my feet smell less like death and more like washing powder!

FraxinusExcelsior · 23/06/2018 15:25

Pop socks are nylon. No wicking properties at all.
Really it's hardly surprising that they smell.

You have to wear some kind of socks with all trainers and shoes, how will you keep the bacteria from your sweat out otherwise?

ChristinaMarlowe · 23/06/2018 15:30

Ohhh, Sketchers make their own sock thingies??

Hmm. Maybe I could wrangle a free pair. I know how that sounds but I feel robbed tbh and it might ease my inner child that is whining "It's not faaaiir" Grin

Thanks for replies so far. I mean really, who wants to worry whenever they smell a horrid unwashed odor (common around 11-18s I'm afraid!) that it might be their own tootsies!? Boak Envy

There was a similar issue a while back with some other brands. Expensive trainers and Nike football boots I think they were and it was caused by a glue used in the manufacture. People were sitting their trainers outside because of the cat wee smell being so strong. I binned my DH's new Lacoste trainers because of it. Some of the brands changed their manufacturers as a result of the sheer number of complaints. Might be worth emailing sketchers saying you believe there is a fault.

SluttyButty · 23/06/2018 15:31

These are what I wear. They have silicone grippers on the back so they stay put.

ChristinaMarlowe · 23/06/2018 15:33

True enough, Fraxinus, it's just never been as issue with any other shoe from Chippie (aww, nostalgia) to Reebok so it seems excessive. Excessive pong. Bleurgh

If you have a dunnes stores near you they do great little footsies. They are really low cut at the front for ballet pump but they have silicone grippers on the heels to stop them sliding down.

Fluffyears · 23/06/2018 15:38

Mine don’t smell and I wear the tiny socks but my god they are hotter than Satan’s arse crack. They really are too hot for summer which I when I want to go out walking!

SequinsOnEverything · 23/06/2018 15:39

I used to wear pop socks with ballet flats and had to stop because the pop socks smelt awful at the end of the day. I had to put them in the wash as soon as I got in and then wash my feet. So the pop sock/sketches combo is probably not a good idea.

eosmum · 23/06/2018 15:45

I has skechers for DS, after 3 wears the complete sole came off, didn't want to know in the shop said that he had obviously been running in them and there were only made to be walked in. Bonkers, haven't bought a thing from them since.

TornFromTheInside · 23/06/2018 15:46

Tip for you.... put vodka into a spray bottle and spray them inside with vodka. It doesn't smell, but the alcohol will help kill any bacteria and remove most if not all of the smell. You can mix it with water a little if you need a bit more volume.

SluttyButty · 23/06/2018 15:49

eosmum I initially read that as three years and was going to say that's a bit unreasonable 😂 I should put my glasses on really.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/06/2018 15:49

Have a look at Think shoes as an alternative. I have these and they are amazingly comfortable. Expensive but they really last. www.think-shoes-online.co.uk/women/lace-ups/20221/think-lace-up-kapsl

HannaSong · 23/06/2018 15:56

They will smell without some kind of sock. I just cut up some normal old socks to fit - no smell at all

Historydweeb · 23/06/2018 16:04

Think you can buy charcoal insoles somewhere which eliminate odours. I once had a pair of Nike once which were the same. Never had a problem before or since with any other shoe

lizzie1970a · 23/06/2018 16:09

That's good to know. I was going to buy some but won't. I wear FitFlop sandals and no smell whatsoever so I'll stick to them.

Floralnomad · 23/06/2018 16:14

I have some Go walks and wear them daily for dog walking and general wear without socks and mine don’t smell at all , perhaps it only happens if you are pre disposed to smelly feet , which I’ve never had .

You need to kill the bacteria in the shoes too. Get a decent shoe spray. 40° wash won't always help.
