To unlock the pocket from my son's school blazer...

MuckyMare · 22/06/2018 10:24

School blazers are £35 each. I have 2 son's.
Money is so tight right now.

I've just seen that Asda do navy blazers.

I'm thinking of in picking the pockets from their old blazers and sewing them onto asda ones

Total cost £20 for 2 rather than £70

Do you think the school will object?

Oh absolutely DO it if you can.

The price of school uniforms is a massive piss take. Someone is making a shitload of money from parents, many who already struggle enough financially as it is! Hmm

Oldraver · 22/06/2018 11:21

I’m pretty sure school aren’t allowed to specify branded uniform anyway.

Er well, yes they can if certain items are compulsory and can only be bought from one supplier.

A supplier that is taking nearly 20k each yearly intake if you buy just one of the items you have to have

AlexanderHamilton · 22/06/2018 11:22

I couldn’t do that as I wouldn’t be able to replicate the blue braiding but if you think it will look the same go for it.

Whoever said schools can’t specify brands/logo etc. Unfortunately they can in secondary.

PurpleCrowbar · 22/06/2018 11:32

I reckon he could style out any teasing.

'Yeah mate, my mum said I could have an official blazer or this shit one plus < insert desirable fashion item / game etc >. Oddly enough, I didn't pick the blazer. I'm sure this one will make an ok goalpost anyway.'

But definitely match buttons.

Or try lost property. Lots of schools are starting to think about disposing of the unclaimed mountain about now - they may well have several one in the right size you can have borrow.

Eliza9917 · 22/06/2018 11:35

What do you all mean by pocket? Is it the actual breast pocket or the badge?

If the badge, at my school everyone unpicked the badge and re-sewed it on to the next blazer.

Never heard of sewing on actual pockets before.

MuckyMare · 22/06/2018 11:41

I'm good with a sewing machine.

I really don't think that a bunch of 13 year old boys would be arsed about a blazer being slightly different. Theyre too busy talking about Fortnite.

The school blazers are just your standard ones so I doubt it would be hard to find the same brand cheaper

actually just found exact same one on Amazon for 21 quid

Still a £14 saving

Eliza - quite a few schools have blazers where the logo is machine sewn directly onto the blazer on a breast pocket.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/06/2018 11:52

That is a brilliant idea, @MuckyMare - and I am kicking myself that I didn't think of it whilst my dses were still at school!

My school used to sell badges and you could sew onto any blazer that was the right colour. So go for it.

Bluelonerose · 22/06/2018 11:58

I thought you hadn't unpicked the pocket and hed shouted at you for doing so Blush

School should be fine with that. If anyone does say anything he should just say I don't know mom got it.

Wow, that really is some next level fleece the parents shit. I agree with a proper uniform but fuck that.

kierenthecommunity · 22/06/2018 12:07

I was considering snipping off the embroidered logo of my sons swearshirts and seeing but them onto plain ones Grin

However purple v neck jumpers are a bit hard to come by and the ones I found on eBay weren’t cheap enough to warrant the effort.

For a blazer though I’d definitely do it!

Oopsmeagain · 22/06/2018 12:10

That amazon link actually says it is £3.44 for aged 16+! Was all excited for you until I realised it is for a 48" chest!

FatBarry · 22/06/2018 12:14

Do they have a second hand uniform shop?

When mine were at school they did and you could pick up school uniform in excellent condition for as little as two quid for a sweatshirt. I also bought DS second hand jumpers as he wrecked them, I bought DD new because they lasted ages, and could be donated to the second hand shop!

Sequencedress · 22/06/2018 12:20

Oh god yes, do it! SO sensible! Grin

Precisely Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 22/06/2018 12:22

It's an utterly genius idea OP.

AForegoneConclusion · 22/06/2018 12:24

That is a great idea! I'm shite at sewing but will give that a go.

As long as the colour is a decent match, I honestly don't think anyone is likely to notice. Definitely just do it, don't confess to the school!

AynRandTheObjectivist · 22/06/2018 12:33

It's a great idea and if the school say anything about it (they won't), tell them to cough up if it's so important.

DailyMailFail101 · 22/06/2018 12:42

Check your local charity shop bet they have lots of blazers from the local schools, seems daft paying lots for 5weeks worth of wear.

Myotherusernameisbest · 22/06/2018 12:49

Great idea but check if there are any reviews about it being washed. I did this and bought a cheaper M&S one which after each wash was so screwed up and looked really crap, whereas the school one which was £10 dearer washes up a dream every single time with no creasing at all. So I do now pay a bit more for the no hassle of washing each week
