Nursery in a heatwave

We're apparently due a heatwave next week. Do you send your kid to nursery as normal and just trust they keep them hydrated, cool and comfortable?

Erm, yes. If I trust them to look after my child, I’ll trust them to know how to keep them cool!

Why would you think they wouldn't?

Yep-I trust them in all other respects so no reason why they can’t be sensible enough to manage the heat! I usually just bring a cold drink to offer at collection time and make extra effort to rehydrate before bed, just in case.

Well yes. I can’t keep my child out of nursery and not go to work everytime it’s hot.

Yes otherwise I’d have to take time off work. It’s not in a nursery’s interest to actively make children uncomfortable/dehydrated etc. If you believe yours might be doing that and/or have proof then I would be reporting it to OFSTED/CSSIW and looking for a new childcare provider!

It would never have occurred to me not to when mine were little. A heatwave in the UK is generally far from dangerous levels of heat. If I couldn't trust a nursery I those circumstances I don't think I would trust them at all ever tbh.

Yes of course! Our nursery usually asks for spare clothes and towels and gets the kids all out in paddling pools to keep them cool when it gets ridiculous!

Are you in a country where the temperature is insanely hot?

If not just send them. Nursery children get plenty of fluids and staff are great at water play, ice lollies and air conditioning if needed.

Quite often their water bottle is near empty when i pick up after a long day and not been re-filled with cold water

If you have an issue with something then just speak to them about it 🤷‍♀️

Yes, i just expect both kids will be more tired than normal!

What else would I do with them? It’s not like I can not go to work when the sun shines.

Yes, I trust them not to kill her every other day, so never even crossed my mind. Children actually don’t need loads of water, especially if they are having milk or water at meals. Mine comes back with her water bottle still mostly full from school. But she’s not dehydrated and has plenty at home when she’s less distracted. Is she old enough to ask for water? Or just send a bigger bottle if you aren’t sure.

Most people can't take time off work every time it gets warm.

If you're worried about the water bottle not being refilled then just ask. Honestly though, if they have drinks at snack time x2, plus lunch, plus a water bottle they're not going to dehydrate!

I guarantee that if the bottle was full somebody else would be worried / complaining that there little precious hadn't been given a drink all day and/or not know how much they had drunk.

Send them in with two water bottles.

How do you know it's not their second bottle of water, nursery could have refilled it already

well you cant keep kids of school because of a heat wave so i dont see why they xcant go to nursery.

So it doesn't need refilling.

Can you buy a larger one or perhaps send in two? Put one in the fridge overnight so its really cold and put that in her bag and then one in her hand?

Occasionally when its been hot DS has come out with an empty bottle but I've watched him drinking it during storytime and just bring a fresh one with me.

How long are they in?
A standard kids drinks bottle over 8 hours of childcare might suggest insufficient time to have a drink if nothing else is provided

If you are concerned they’re not refilling their water bottle then just ask them. Keeping them off would be extreme.

If the water bottle isn’t actually empty yet then what’s the problem?

It's meant to be around 25 degs. That's warm not a major heat wave.
