Nursery in a heatwave

dingodollarman · 21/06/2018 14:05

We're apparently due a heatwave next week. Do you send your kid to nursery as normal and just trust they keep them hydrated, cool and comfortable?

OP posts:
Takethemdown · 21/06/2018 16:08

They have milk, water or juice at breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, tea every day in the nurseries I have worked in.
We would refill water bottles if needed.

Marmite27 · 21/06/2018 16:10

Yes, of course.

Though they have air conditioning, so will probably be more comfortable than at home!

CatLadyToddlerMother · 21/06/2018 16:13

DDs Nursery has air-con so I still send her as long as the air con is working.

JellyBears · 21/06/2018 18:39

I bet your nursery has you pegged as “that mother” lol seriously are you stupid? Of course they will keep him cool and hydrated..

Ohmydayslove · 21/06/2018 18:41

So are you booking the week of work every time it’s hot? School too. The next 18 years?

insancerre · 21/06/2018 18:43

As a nursery manager I find this thread really weird
Of course we know how to care gut children in a heatwave
We're not stupid
We are childcare professionals

Elkcuhc56 · 21/06/2018 18:44

What will you do when they start school?? will you also have the same worries? Hmm

Get a grip OP.

Ohmydayslove · 21/06/2018 18:46

And you know kids are never dehydrated in Britain unless majority ill they are just thirsty

insancerre · 21/06/2018 19:04

Thinking about it, I've worked in early years for about 25 years and I've never had a child keel over because of dehydration
Or any other reason either
I can't keep a house plant alive but you can 100% trust me with a toddler

So the water bottle was almost empty at the end of a session?

  1. it’s been used, kids kept cool.

  2. probably not going to refill it until the next session, for freshness.

  3. why would you think they wouldn’t know how to keep the children cool? Do you have reason not to trust them?

Tumbleweed101 · 21/06/2018 19:10

We have free access to water alongside water bottles. Plus water and milk with snacks/meals. You’ll likely find the water bottle you provide is a back up.

Solasshole · 21/06/2018 19:10

Having previously lived in Australia for 18 years I find the idea of not sending your kids to nursery or school because it's too warm amusing Wink

DashingRed · 21/06/2018 19:11

I have to take enough time off work to deal with stomach bugs, colds, chest infections etc.

The heat? God no, they can deal with that!

flopsyrabbit1 · 21/06/2018 19:20

a few days of warm weather Shock

do you fuss when we have a bit of cold weather

i do wander how the next generation are going to cope in life when older

They will be fine, nursery stuff are professionals and know how to provide care in all seasons!

If you have concerns about your specific nursery you need to discuss it with them.

Ohmydayslove · 21/06/2018 19:44

Think the op has gone.

Maybe to buy a box of grips

SockQueen · 21/06/2018 19:51

Nursery has air con and is cooler than my suntrap house. And they are better at getting DS to drink than me. Why on earth would I keep him off?

AnneProtheroe · 21/06/2018 19:57

We're apparently due a heatwave next week

Been reading the Daily Express or Daily Mail?

News flash: it's summer. Summer generally means slightly warmer temperatures, admittedly not always in the UK.

The nursery will know how to keep their charges cool. It's their job to do so.

DinoGreen · 21/06/2018 20:04

My DS doesn't even have a water bottle at nursery! They have a drink at breakfast, snack, lunch and tea, they can ask for a drink at any other time and will be given one, and when it's hot and they're in the garden I've seen them with big jugs of water out there offering extra cups. No one's dehydrated yet ...

Welliejellie · 21/06/2018 20:17

How do you know the water bottles have not been filled with fresh water?

I work in a nursery and I refill the water bottles every hour or so on hot days. On a normal day I refill them after lunch.

We also provide an icepop in the afternoon on really warm days.

We will really do our best to keep the children cool and comfortable in the hot weather.

I am always shocked at how many parents don't provide sunhats when it is warm
