New car delivered today - car slowing down outside three times

Evening all.

Not sure if I'm being paranoid here but:

My lounge faced the street. I got s new car today. New new.

I've seen the same car drive past three times now in three hours. Slowing down outside my house.

If they are going to take the car my guess is they are going to take the car. My concern is that DD and me are alone tonight, partner and DSS both away tonight.

Clearly I'm just going to call police if I see it being stolen. However, in the interest of keeping us safe, would you leave keys downstairs?

They wouldn’t break in to get the key card if it’s a push button start. They’d hope to be able to pick up the signal or whatever it is from outside. If they couldn’t, hopefully they’d go off to the next target.
I have a Clio and was advised by a police officer who came round for something else not to leave the key card by the front door.

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 23:12

Have you anything that could look like a security camera you could stick up at a window? Have you a stairgate or two you could put across the front and back door to maybe delay access/make noise?

itsbritneybiatch · 20/06/2018 23:13

It's a push button start with a fob

Leave the keys where they can see them. They will take the keys and leave. Don't bother hiding said keys it'll keep them in your house longer looking for them.

itsbritneybiatch · 20/06/2018 23:17

Is this ok

Can you log concern with 111 to get any police on patrol to swing by? make sure you take your hand bag, purse and house keys, small electronics upstairs when you go to bed. If they do come in for the keys they may take quick snatch stuff too. Cancelling cards, IT stuff to redo would be a major pain.

zaph0d · 20/06/2018 23:17

Keep the keys in a metal box to reduce risk of theft.

Smileyeyes68 · 20/06/2018 23:20

Even though it's a company car and if it's stolen the fleet insurance will cover it, it will still affect your own car insurance on your own vehicle for years to come as the risk is perceived as higher (bitter voice of experience!).

Kahlua4me · 20/06/2018 23:21

As passingwords said, it may be worth logging your thoughts with the police on 101. Tell them that you have seen a car drive past and slow down several times this evening, looking at your new car.

They may well drive past during the night....

jellycat · 20/06/2018 23:22

I agree with Papergirl1968. If you can block the signal they will probably just move on and try another car. We bought a metal key safe for our car keys (both push button starts). Have you got a cake tin or similar? That would probably do.

itsbritneybiatch · 20/06/2018 23:22

I get the metal box thing. If my huge partner and huge step son where here. We need to invest in one of these.

Anyway I'm probably being paranoid. No one is robbing anything after one night of casing the joint.

Famous last words!

Take your car keys upstairs. They can use a device to the key info to open and drive car. Saw something on tv recently.

itsbritneybiatch · 20/06/2018 23:23

I only have foil and those plastic Ikea bakers by moulds.

jeanzbeanz · 20/06/2018 23:25

Good luck OP

itsbritneybiatch · 20/06/2018 23:26

I've shut the blinds now. I can't see anything anyway now. I am going to go surf
For a parking thread Grin

I would have moved the car a few miles streets away! Blush

clairedelalune · 20/06/2018 23:28

Can you leave a light on upstairs at the front, with window open slightly so that they would hopefully not risk being heard by the not sleeping person they think is in that room?
But yes, I would leave keys somewhere obvious and my phone close by.

clairedelalune · 20/06/2018 23:30

Phone close to me that is. Keys nowhere near me.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/06/2018 23:35

My neighbours in a downstairs flat had their car nicked this way

None of us saw or heard anything

LizB62A · 20/06/2018 23:36

Get the reg of the passing car if you can.
Wrap your keyfob in 2-3 layers of foil - that blocks mobile phone signals so should block the key fob scanners.
If it's a brand new car they're more likely to try and nick it by intercepting the keyfob signal than by breaking in, but....

Mamawingingit1234 · 20/06/2018 23:40

Shamelessly placemarking so I can see if it’s stolen in the morning!

MsJolly · 20/06/2018 23:41

Put your keys in the microwave and they can’t bounce the signal

victoriaspongecake · 20/06/2018 23:46

Couldn't it be that the car is slowing down BECAUSE THERE IS A BEND in the road?......
And if it is the same car could it not be that the driver was going somewhere, then coming back then going elsewhere? eg taking children to various clubs at various times and returning ??

lineyturner · 20/06/2018 23:46

I am a community nurse and do this to find people's houses - slow down and drive past Blush then circle back etc

Is your house on a road with house names rather than numbers?

snewname · 20/06/2018 23:47

Scary. I'm glad I'm not alone tonight or I'd be jittery just based on this thread
