To go to the local minor injuries unit at A&E?

I hurt my foot about two weeks ago. I’m still finding it difficult to walk on and the pain is still quite severe.

I’m having to take lots of painkillers and bandage it up.

WIBU to go to my nearest minor injuries unit for an x ray? I don’t want to waste time.

Sounds like exactly what minor injuries is for! Hope it’s notning serious

Jamboree05 · 20/06/2018 07:55

Of course not.

If you're worried about wasting time, ring NHS 111 and ask their advice. They'll probably tell you to go in.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 20/06/2018 07:55

Sounds exactly what they’re there for.

SabineUndine · 20/06/2018 07:56

Have you seen your GP? I’d do that first.

mumof2sarah · 20/06/2018 07:58

Definately Minors or a local walk in centre. If you visited your own dr they'd only send you to the hospital for an x-ray anyway. It's what that service should be used for. Hope everything's ok OP

Polly99 · 20/06/2018 07:59

Don’t bother with your GP, they won’t be able to diagnose. Your foot needs an x-ray. Go to minor injuries or A&E.

TeddyIsaHe · 20/06/2018 08:01

Exactly what minors are for. Hope it’s all ok!

endofthelinefinally · 20/06/2018 08:01

I wouldn't take up a gp appointment tbh. Minor injuries is more appropriate as you should probably have an xray.

Seeline · 20/06/2018 08:14

Our local minor injuries doesn't do x-rays so check first. We have to go to A+ E.

NormskiNamechange · 20/06/2018 08:23

Thanks everyone. It’s part of the A&E so they definitely do X-rays. I hadn’t thought to check though!

A&e is for anything that’s happened in last 48 hours. You need to get referral from gp. Mine can arrange X-rays immediately or within same
Week

mumof2sarah · 20/06/2018 19:41

Hi OP did you get seen? I hope you're ok x

Chouetted · 20/06/2018 19:51

You've probably been seen by now, but I travelled to my local MIU with a five day old suspected broken foot and they basically questioned my sanity for not going to A&E instead (closer, so less walking involved). Absolutely no point seeing a GP for this sort of thing in my experience, it's routine for minor injuries, and they know that it's easy to assume a sore foot is a sprain, causing a delay in getting it seen.

ShirleyWilliams · 20/06/2018 20:01

If it's not a new thing then you'll need a referral from your GP.

ThistleAmore · 20/06/2018 20:15

Minor injuries is brilliant. We call it 'diet A&E' in our house.

And yes, go, that's what it's there for - to relieve pressure on GPs (who'll just refer you anyway) and 'proper' A&E which is for accidents and emergencies (the clue is in the name).

Having fractured bones in my foot in the past, you wouldn't be walking at all, let alone after a fortnight, unless it was a very minor crack which is just going to get better by itself anyway. Sounds more like soft tissue damage, TBH (which you'll also just have to wait to get better).

Still, better to go than not to if you're concerned.

LivingMyBestLife · 20/06/2018 20:20

Check if the x-ray is open - the minor injury clinics round here vary, we drive to one about half an hour away as it has longer opening times for the x-ray bit Grin

Ollivander84 · 20/06/2018 21:02

Thistle - I walked on a broken foot and ankle for a week. It was day 8 when I went to a&e and they did an x ray, straight in a cast and then ended up in a walking cast. 10 weeks in total Blush
Although to be fair even a&e said "we don't think it's broken as not really swollen and you're walking"
It did hurt a bit to walk... Grin

Chouetted · 20/06/2018 21:53

I knew someone who walked on a broken foot for three weeks. It took longer to live that down than for the break to heal Grin

Ollivander84 · 20/06/2018 21:54

I forgot to mention I still don't know how I did it Blush
"I just got out of bed and it hurt" apparently isn't a great explanation HmmGrin

SparklyMagpie · 20/06/2018 21:58

Can't believe I've only come across this thread now! I did exactly the same coming up to 3 weeks now. My foot just gave way and bent right in half :(

I'm having more pain with it now and it's still swollen but didn't want to bother A&E 🙈 got a docs app first thing Friday in which she'll most likely give me an instant referral

Hope you got seen and your foots a little better OP :)

Uncreative · 20/06/2018 22:04

Been ther, done that. I knew instantly when I broke my foot. However, when I broke my ankle, I carried on as normal for months before slipping and spraining it very badly. I went to A&E for the swelling and was told it had been broken for a long time as therewas evidence of healing. I’d basically just rebroken it.

SparklyMagpie · 20/06/2018 23:18

Apologies for derailing the thread but can I ask @Uncreative, I know I haven't broken my ankle/foot,but my ankle bone literally touched the floor...how long should I have swelling for and should I be getting pain in other parts of my foot and up my calf?

Only asking because you've been through a break and I'm clueless until I get mine checked 🙈 didn't think A&E could do much an it happened on the way to my first date in 4 years and he's been badgering me for nearly 3 weeks to get it checked out 🙈

My hospital doesn't have a minor injuries and I didn't want to take up time but it is getting worse, with a near 3 year old it's hard to rest it :(

Uncreative · 20/06/2018 23:40

@sparklymagpie My first reaction to your post was skip the doctor and go straight to A&E. What makes you think you haven’t broken something?

I’m not a doctor so I don’t know how long you should or shouldn’t be in pain for however I carried on as normal the first time I broke my ankle. It hurt in the general area but I didn’t think it was too serious.

Second time, the most painful part was the swelling. The swelling developed very quickly and went up to my knee.

When I broke my foot, again, intense pain but I could put 80% of my weight on it within a couple days. I’m not recommending that. - I pushed myself to hard and only narrowly avoided surgery because of that. I should have followed medical advice and stayed off work for longer but I was in hero mode (I was young and stupid). The pain covered most of my foot even though it was only one small bone that had broken.

Your description of ‘ankle touching the ground’ makes it sound like when I broke my foot, not when I broke my ankle. Please go somewhere you can have an x-ray. It is the only way to rule out a break.

Hope the date went well!

SparklyMagpie · 20/06/2018 23:54

@Uncreative thank you for replying and yes I feel very stupid for not being seen now :( I can't make it tomorrow but I need to speak to my GP about something else aswell so I'll go straight from there first thing Friday and get it looked at

I don't even know how it happened, I'd walked out of a shop and a couple of steps and snap. Always just assumed although I could hardly walk and haven't ever felt anything like it at the time, that i'd not be able to walk full stop if something was broken

I will get it checked at the hospital, will even try tomorrow night if I can get there and get properly checked

And my date went fantastic and we're on date number 6 tomorrow Grin

Thanks :) really appreciate the reply

QuestionableMouse · 21/06/2018 00:01

@Jamboree05 this is exactly what minor injuries is for... GP will only send on to minor injuries for an xray anyway.
