To go to the GP with hay fever

I’d never normally dream of this, but it’s unmanageable.

I’ve taken an tried everything in the pharmacy. It’s affecting sleep and was downright scary the other night l, my face was so sore and swollen I had trouble swallowing I was so congested. I wake up eyes glued and swollen, sore mouth and a thick head. I’ve never though hay fever could be like this, it’s gone from irritating to awful.

You should go back to the pharmacist first and see what they advise. Or visit a herbalist and try some homeopathic remedies.
My brother went to the gp with hayfever when his eyes were so swollen he could no longer drive and they didn't prescribe him anything more than he could have bought from Boots.

dementedpixie · 20/06/2018 07:53

No yanbu. There may be something they can prescribe

dementedpixie · 20/06/2018 07:54

I'm sure there are prescription only antihistamines

SabineUndine · 20/06/2018 07:55

Yes, see your GP. They can prescribe stuff you can’t buy over the counter. I wouldn’t spend time or money on homeopathy.

CurrentCurrant · 20/06/2018 07:55

Obviously I’ve been to the pharmacist first! In the pharmacy I mentioned.

Funnily also a herbalist as a friend is one. No effect. I ate honey from the next road for months before, and I can confirm fired nettle tea does nowt

For clarity, multiple pharmacists across a number of visits.

Homeopathy- no. I’ve wasted enough money at this point

Apparently, you can get an injection to help with hay fever. Only just found this out. I’d definitely see the gp.

jazzandh · 20/06/2018 07:58

DH went to Dr about his hayfever which was causing asthma etc and he was given prescription antihistamines which so far have proved much better that the otc stuff.

Mamabear14 · 20/06/2018 07:58

I was told you can get the injection too. It is something I am going to ask about as my prescription only nasal spray isn't doing it's thing this year and I want to gouge out my own eyeballs.

TwoGinScentedTears · 20/06/2018 07:59

Ha! Homeopathy for hay fever! I wish. I take prescription only antihistamines and have done for years. This year is the first year I've noticed that they may not be working as well, but by all accounts is an horrendous year for pollen, a perfect storm type thing.

I get fexofenadine and a nasal spray, avamys. The nasal spray takes some getting used to and I always thought it was a bit Shit, but actually it's brilliant. It takes time to build up in your system too, so don't write it off.

You know all the other tips don't you? No line dried bedding or clothes, shower the pollen off when you get home, chamomile tea bags help with swollen eyes, nasal rinses, steam inhalations to clear your sinuses and windows closed as far as possible?

No Flowers (I love this joke!) because that'd make things worse!

CurrentCurrant · 20/06/2018 08:01

Yep, shower on entry. Bedding dried indoors and all that jazz yet still still Evening are actually worse than outside!! Why??

OP posts:
Mamabear14 · 20/06/2018 08:02

I have the avamys spray too. I also thought it was a bit pants at first but I now call it the miracle spray. It means that with my other antihistamine tablets I can actually leave the house, even if I can't wear mascara!

Toast3 · 20/06/2018 08:03

My oh has prescription meds. He takes a daily tab during the summer months and it really has helped. It just keeps it at bay. Go to the GP 👍

TwoGinScentedTears · 20/06/2018 08:04

I dunno, it's like a massive build up, isn't it? My gp said I could take into 3 a day of cetirizine, until you get to the gp have you tried taking one antihistamine in the morning and one early evening? The gp tried to get it under control that way before prescribing the strong stuff. It helped but didn't work like fexofenadine does!

Hayfever is a form of allergy. You are suffering a more than moderate allergic reaction which is affecting your breathing. If I were you would go to the doctor today.

There is a prescription-only antihistamine which might help you. You can also get an injection - my colleague says it's steroids so it's bound to do the trick.

Tigger365 · 20/06/2018 08:11

Another one that swears by avimys and fexofenadine. Though this year is awful! It’s causing some serious problems with my asthma.
Definitely worth a gp visit. Good luck!!

Patienceofatoddler · 20/06/2018 08:16

Yes go see your GP there is options available which are not available over the counter.

I usually use Fexofenadine (prol spelt wrong) it's 120mg compared to the other the counter stuff which is 10mg.

Hayfever can be completely debilitating cause lack of sleep and time off work- you shouldn't need to put your life on hold for two three months.

Really hope your feeling better soon it really is horrendous.

CurrentCurrant · 20/06/2018 08:17

TBH I’ve been double dosing more than one type of antihistamine

MrsOsM · 20/06/2018 08:17

DH suffers really bad, although so7nds like you have it worse. He sees the GP for prescription anti-histamines, nose sprays and eye drops. Definitely go to your GP.

nervousnails · 20/06/2018 08:17

Oh OP, I feel your pain. It was horrendous for my DH as well. The only thing that has sorted him out is accupuncture. Do try it if you have a good practitioner near you. 2 sessions and he has had no trouble since.

imonaplane · 20/06/2018 08:21

I would definitely consult your GP. My hayfever has been terrible this year. Our surgery offers phone consultations and I got my tablets and nasal spray using this rather than an actual appointment.

CurrentCurrant · 20/06/2018 08:22

Ours doesn’t but amazingly I’ve logged on and seen a free appt at 3

TwoGinScentedTears · 20/06/2018 08:51

Great, you'll feel much better by the weekend!

BestBeforeYesterday · 20/06/2018 08:52

Don't worry about going to the GP with hay fever, that's what GPs are for
