To go to the GP with hay fever

I’d never normally dream of this, but it’s unmanageable.

I’ve taken an tried everything in the pharmacy. It’s affecting sleep and was downright scary the other night l, my face was so sore and swollen I had trouble swallowing I was so congested. I wake up eyes glued and swollen, sore mouth and a thick head. I’ve never though hay fever could be like this, it’s gone from irritating to awful.

Definitely go to the go they can help. They gave me stronger anti histamines. Its an angry after all, some people get it worse than others. If it affects your day Tuesday day life then it needs sorting.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 20/06/2018 09:04

I've been triple dosing on otc tablets and they're doing FUCK ALL this year. The only thing that works for a bit is beconase but I still have to use it more than the recommended dose. Come back and tell what the gp offers you please!

dontlikebeards · 20/06/2018 09:42

My doctor told me to take up to 4 anti histamines a day. When that didn't help he gave me the steroid injection, it was like a miracle cure! I had it for about 3 years in a row. Some doctors don't like to give it because it is a steroid but if you are that bad don't take no for an answer.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 20/06/2018 14:58

OP! Remember to say you are having trouble swallowing! That's a serious symptom. Don't let them fob you off!

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 20/06/2018 16:05

Go to the GP. I take prescription Fexofenadine 365 days of the year as I'm allergic to just about everything. It's not available OTC so you have to get a prescription for it.

DextroDependant · 20/06/2018 16:09

Get the prescription anti histamine OP. My dog tells me to start taking it in March and take it every day through to October, symptoms or not.

BeyondThePage · 20/06/2018 16:09

Fexofenadine and Avamys here too. Avamys takes a couple of weeks to build up - but then it truly is like magic!

DextroDependant · 20/06/2018 16:10

My doc, the dog has no opinion on my medication usage.

VictimofLava · 20/06/2018 16:10

If you are having trouble swallowing, and your face is swelling you should go to GP as an Emergency Patient or A and E.

Are you 100% sure this is due to pollen?

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 20/06/2018 16:45

I ❤️ Avamys too. When hay fever is as bad as yours you should see the doctor.

Arrowfanatic · 20/06/2018 17:05

Go to the GP, the rules changed this year and for mild to moderate hayfever they are no longer allowed to prescribe anything however yours sounds just like mine which is severe hayfever.

My GP prescribes me fexofenadine and I top it off with otc hayfever stuff. Doesn't get rid of it but does allow me to function.

Isleepinahedgefund · 20/06/2018 17:27

Definitely go. I have the most horrendous hay fever and seasonal asthma. You definitely need more than OTC and if you can’t breathe properly that’s a big problem.

Ask to be referred to the allergy department at hospital, it won’t help you this year but for next year it will.

After many years of suffering really badly with grass pollen (I have an epi pen my allergy is that severe), I had immunotherapy injections this year and I’ve hardly had any hay fever symptoms this year. You have a series of them for three years (obviously only if grass pollen is the problem). Last year my asthma became dangerously uncontrolled in hay fever season and I could hardly leave the house for a lot of the summer.

ChilliMum · 20/06/2018 17:38

Another recommendation for fexofenadine. Prescription only but is a wonder. I have an allergy to grass pollen, I have been admitted to hospital with severe asthma symptoms (I don't have asthma) because my hay fever was so uncontrolled.

I take fexofenadine 180mg and I can cut the grass with barely any symptoms. The problem is though you need to start early and build it up in your system. I was late starting this year and it is barely controlling my symptoms and my garden is like a jungle Sad

OP - I had this last weekend, too, and am still recovering. If yours is persisting you might need steroid nasal spray/eye-drops, so you'd need to see the GP.

CPtart · 20/06/2018 20:01

Look up montelukast. Used in asthma and for seasonal allergies. Really effective.

andadietcoke · 20/06/2018 20:05

I take fexofenadine via an online consultation on the Lloyds pharmacy website and paid for a private prescription. I too didn't want to bother the GP with it. I've also found that relatively high dose magnesium helps too, and take Pirinase nasal spray and Opticrom eye drops.

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 20/06/2018 20:09

I am also on fexofenadine & Avamys and I’m having my best year in decades (sorry to brag!)
It has taken several trips to the gp before getting something that works at a high enough dose. Don’t give up!

Blogwoman · 20/06/2018 20:10

I hope your GP is helpful. My DD has severe hayfever & is taking prescription meds. I also bought her an air purifier, which she feels is helping. Such a debilitating thing.

Oldraver · 20/06/2018 20:14

Avamys was brilliant for me. Until it gave me nosebleeds and was taken off of me

Nightmanagerfan · 20/06/2018 20:25

Another vote for fexfenadine. I’m also asthmatic and hay fever makes my asthma worse.

I take it from Feb to October. My husband was laughing at me starting so early but he’s really suffering now having only taken his prescription antihistamine for a few weeks. It takes time to build and also means if you forget a day it’s not dehabilitating.

User111888 · 20/06/2018 20:33

Hayfever can be effectively managed by appropriate medication. Some of it is prescription only so GP visit is needed. My dd suffers with severe eye swelling during the season but if we start early enough then she can avoid using the strong steroid eye drops altogether and manage only with the mild one (FML). She uses opatanol eye drops which are really impossible to overdose so should probaby be over the counter. But both drops are prescription only so regular GP visits are unavoidable. So don't feel bad about going to GP, they might actually help.

flippinthebird · 20/06/2018 20:36

Go to the GP and get something proper prescribed. Or look up kanolog injections at your local hospital, it will disappear. Had mine in Manchester for £90 about 2 weeks ago, it was that or end up having sick days for work. It's COMPLETELY gone!!!

WeirdScenesInsideTheGoldmine · 20/06/2018 20:52

OP I basically had the same throughout my teens. Basically I had the flu from April to September every fucking year.

Eventually at 21 I went off to an acupuncturist unable to breathe as usual.... left her office half an hour later all signs cleared up and no more hay fever until this year. It’s amazinf, please try it

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 20/06/2018 21:00

Yet another vote for fexofenadine! My GP was/is very sympathetic - they understood how completely debilitating severe hay fever can be.
