To think I shouldn’t have to worry about Mumsnetters’ safety just because they want to attend a lawful public meeting?

Tomorrow a number of Mumsnetters are planning to attend a public meeting to discuss a proposed change to the law that affects women.

On Friday a threat was made that a ‘device’ would be left at the venue. Sussex police are treating this as a serious threat and later that day the bomb squad raided a house in the local area where ‘potentially explosive materials’ were found:

This is in addition to all the ‘usual’ threats to do some ‘GBH’ to the women attending:

And no, that’s not just talk:

Maybe there’ll be masked men again blocking women from entering the meeting:

Maybe they’ll stand outside chanting ‘burn it down’ as they have previously. Maybe they’ll then track down women who have attended the meeting to harass them as they go about their work:

Whatever your views on the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act, AIBU to think this kind of behaviour is abhorrent in a civil society and the attitude that you get your way by threatening, beating up and maybe even blowing up anyone who attempts to express a view you disagree with is a threat to our democracy?

Posted before I finished there. Finally, I am glad the meeting went without issue, I expect security was beefed up a lot given the threats (along with the usual behaviour of TRAs at such meetings).

There's a thread in Site Stuff asking Justine Mumsnet to issue a public statement slamming the terrorists who are assaulting and intimidating women meeting to discuss women's rights. There has been no response or feedback so far.

I feel betrayed. I find this very distressing and disillusioning. I cannot imagine Mumsnet would be silent if any other group was inflicting systematic, planned violence and intimidation against women.

I cannot believe how the violence and threats are being ignored by the press and the politicians. Mainstream trans groups appear to be able to threaten violence with impunity. I can’t image any other area of politics where this would be tolerated.

I find this aspect of it quite terrifying. As you say, if it were another vulnerable group, or society in general, it would be taken more seriously.

No mention of this in the mainstream media, except for Kirkups article. What a disgrace. Of course its terrorism. But noone seems to care as its just women being affected

There's a small mention in this article in the Times today but yes it's shocking how little coverage this is getting and, unfortunately, I do think that it's at least partly because it is women who are being targeted.

I'm really pleased to see some senior trade union officials standing up on this issue:

I wrote to my (Labour) MP about the intimidation, violence and bomb threats but have had no response and the Tories don't seem any better - Hastings is in Amber Rudd's constituency but, as far as I am aware, she doesn't seem to have anything to say about a 'serious' bomb threat and discovery of potential explosives in her area.
