Aptamil formula changed?

Notsureabc · 19/06/2018 22:49

I noticed it changed after a Tesco delivery. It not says birth - 6 months, whereas I thought first milk was both to 12 months (my daughter is 8 months now). Also the amount of fluoride has doubled ?

Aptamil formula changed?

This has been publicised in the papers as it’s making some babies sick.

Strippervicar · 09/07/2018 07:40

I keep hearing this. DD is passed this stage but was on aptamil until I realised cow and gate was identical and cheaper.
I've heard they are saying you need to wait 30 mins for the water to cool. Hm.

Also, would be interested to see whether it reacts better in a perfect prep machine.

Must be terrifying for everyone who has a baby who needs this milk.

ADuckNamedSplash · 09/07/2018 10:07

Cow and Gate is not identical. As a newborn, Cow and Gate made DD very ill. We switched to Aptamil and she was fine.

xoguineas · 10/07/2018 15:41

@Notsureabc did you little one adjust ok to the new formula? Have heard bad things about it making babies sick and I'm worried about starting it.

Please sign & share the petition to get the old formula back.

xoguineas · 10/07/2018 16:02

@MetrioFrappe have already signed but thinking of switching the Aldi Mamia formula instead as it's apparently identical to old Aptamil

Lisabel · 10/07/2018 16:15

Wow, I wonder if you probably shouldn't use it as it seems lots of babies end up vomiting and in pain with it.

Shitonthebloodything · 10/07/2018 16:16

Yes! I noticed with the new packaging there was less there and it's not mixing as well.
Will stock up on the old packaging wherever I see it now I've had this confirmed.

MetrioFrappe · 10/07/2018 17:01

@xoguineas thank you! I'm just trying to spread the word really. It makes me so angry as the milk is inedible. My poor little girl was really sick from drinking it.

There’s a charity called first steps nutrition trust who are trying to access info about the new formulation. I’ve just seen in their Facebook page with this update

We have had a response from @Danone and apparently datacards for the new Aptamil products will go on to their websites at the end of July/beginning of August. We will update our reports before then on information we can access, but not all information is on the packs.

How can all info not be on the packs?! Its totally appalling. One baby sick is one too many.

Shitonthebloodything · 10/07/2018 18:57

Mine has been sick quite a bit over the last day or two since I opened the new packaging I assumed it was the hot weather!
@MetrioFrappe are you mixing that with hot water?

Stars1979 · 10/07/2018 19:20

Cow and gate comfort has changed packaging too and less in the carton. It says nothing has changed but the packaging, anyone had problems on cow and gate too as little one vomitted a large amount of milk this morning, I mean huge amount which is very unusual, hoping just a coincidence.

gekiort · 10/07/2018 19:39

That’s disgusting frappe

Are you following th mixing instructions precisely from the box? I believe there is a change in how you make the bottle up now

KneesupGaston · 10/07/2018 19:53

Yes I've seen about this, I wonder if Aptamil pro futura has changed? More expensive but could be an option if people don't know what to do in the meantime. I think I'd be jumping ship to SMA or HiPP though.

People often like to tell you that follow on milk is just a con blah blah but it's cheaper than first milk and contains more iron (important if you have a baby who is low in iron like mine was!) also I'm glad follow on milk can be advertised, I think the restrictions on promoting baby formula is a disgrace because it limits access to safe, regulated information for women like those who don't know where to turn with this Aptamil problem for example.

LittleRen · 10/07/2018 19:53

This has scared me a little so I have switched to cow and gate today, I know they aren’t identical but we go on holiday on Wednesday and I can’t risk being stuck abroad for 10 days with formula that could make my baby ill! He is being weaned so luckily isn’t so reliant on it. It’s terrible, they are going to lose a lot of business. I would have switched to Aldi but my local doesn’t have pre mades) assuming they do pre mades and we need some for the hol!

LittleRen · 10/07/2018 19:57

It’s now OOS on Ocado and I heard Morrisons have pulled it... so I guess this leaves people with no choice but to switch formula. Hipp is great but only stocked in large supermarkets.

Grandmaswagsbag · 10/07/2018 20:05

I think the restrictions on promoting baby formula is a disgrace because it limits access to safe, regulated information for women like those who don't know where to turn with this Aptamil problem for example.

The whole point of the guidelines is to make sure that info on formula is safe and regulated, that’s why we have regulations. If you want to see what unregulated formula promotion looks like take a look at what they get up to in countries without guidelines (think adding ingredients such a sugar that have negative effect on health). Formula companies don’t promote scientific info. They use marketing just like any other money making business, infact they are mostly anti science. It’s up to the NHS to make sure everyone has safe info about different types of formula and how to make it up safely. I’ve already recommended first steps nutrition trust and they have great a comprehensive guide on infant formulas on their website that is purely scientific.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2018 20:09

It's no problem to use first stage formula for an older baby but I'm really concerned to hear posters saying they use follow on for babies under 6 months as this is not necessarily safe. It's true there's probably not much difference between them but they are absolutely not exactly the same product marketed differently. First stage formula is tightly controlled so please do stick to this for the first 6 months. After that it's up to you if you change. I would as you can get promotions on 6m+ formula and there's generally nothing wrong with it provided your baby is old enough.

MetrioFrappe · 10/07/2018 20:17

Well at first it wasn't obvious that the actual formula had changed, just the box. I made the bottle as I usually do with a fresh kettle that's just boiled. It was clear something was wrong so I checked the box & made it to the instructions. I was told by the Aptamil lot that we should wait for our fresh kettle to cool to 70° but that doesn't seem to make any difference. (I have a KitchenAid kettle that tells me the temperature of the water inside). I usually make my bottles with a long latte spoon that goes into the steriliser that I can stir with until the powder dissolves. There's no way it was going to dissolve. Confused

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 10/07/2018 20:53

I've been told by midwives in the past that Aptamil and Cow & Gate are identical apart from the packaging, made in the same factory etc. So does this mean that the ingredients of C&G have also changed?

gekiort · 10/07/2018 21:00

You don't shake them?

MetrioFrappe · 10/07/2018 21:13

@gekiort no I don't usually shake them. My first baby suffered terribly with colic & reflux so I got used to not shaking the bottles as the air bubbles can cause tummy pains. I also use Dr Browns bottles that usually end up leaking.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2018 21:14

I don't think the formula of aptamil and cow and gate is exactly alike because if you look at the nutrition information it's slightly different. But they are made by the same company for two different sections of the market.

gekiort · 10/07/2018 21:49

frappe

The statement Aptimil gave was very clear you need to follow instructions when mixing this formula, it even mentioned the vigorous shaking.

I'm not trying to defend them but it's absolutely ridiculous to post a picture like you did when you haven't followed the instructions on mixing.

MetrioFrappe · 10/07/2018 22:00

@gekiort the pictures were taken after following the instructions on the pack. I did say I initially made them, then knew something wasn't right so checked the box & made others. Then I took the photos. I actually tried making more after these which turned out the same & they looked so dreadful that I binned the lot. I'd sent my dad out to look for the old boxes & he turned up with 12 of them!
