to feel I've become middle-aged and irrelevant almost overnight?

I've just turned 47. And I don't know what's happened! I use to understand memes and cultural references, but now I understand barely 1 word out of 10 in my DC's conversations.

I crave old-fashioned values like kindness, punctuality (I never used to be punctual!!!) and reliability.

Bits of my job (marketing) annoy me now. When people talk about "creating stories" I just think, "oh shut up, you ponce".

I buy things because they look well-made rather than cool.

I crave silence, and reading, and little treats with a coffee. My face scares me if I don't have make-up on. I'm suddenly into gardening.

I'm realising I've probably blown my chances to be a best-selling novelist and TV presenter/Instagram influencer, but I'm finding I'm not really that bothered about it.

My DH is 2 years older and he pusses me if when he suggests going to gigs in the pub, because I've been doing that for 30 years and would just like a nice dinner party, really.

I feel I've gone from young to old in 6 months. Is this normal? Is this how it happens?

It occurred to me when I started to prefer raisin cakes over chocolate ones and the charms of Monty Don and his soothing tones became most attractive.

Also shoes that are not sexy but quirky and ‘supportive’ along with only wearing massive apple catchers.

Lovely and cosy this middle-aged thing.

Bakingberry · 19/06/2018 14:56

OP this sounds like me and I'm 10 years younger! I think that tastes change and what was important to you in your 20's is going to evolve as you gain more experience in life.

Hope you are embracing the life you want to live.

wiilowmelangell · 19/06/2018 14:56

I own 2 pairs of slippers. My 4" heels are in lovely, dusty boxes.
I work wholemeal or wholegrain into every dinner.
I used to love getting bouquets, now I thrill when the slugs don't eat the veg shoots.
A night out is over by 10.30 but I will stay up till midnight to finish knitting a beanie.
I used to lay on the floor to pull up skin tight jeans, now I lay on the floor to get the cat to eat his dinner.
Dinner parties are replaced by plate on lap watching Dynasty re-runs.
Ooh a cup of tea would be lovely, thank you.

Yeeesssssssssssss it's great isn't it :)

Beamur · 19/06/2018 14:57

Memes are mostly jokes, funny comments, maybe a photo or cartoon - google something like funny dog memes to see. Pinterest is awash with them. Often linked to fandoms etc (Hobbit, Harry Potter, etc) Not just kids stuff though.

alwaysthepessimist · 19/06/2018 14:57

I am 47 and have literally thrown away every item of clothing I own & started a middle aged wardrobe. DD 6 is going away with my DM for a few days in summer hols, OH suggests we should have a romantic night away, I just want 3 days of sleep and a tidy house....I am also at the point of being happy with being middle aged and overweight as long as I can run 5K who cares?

shiklah · 19/06/2018 14:58

I found my only heels in the back of a cupboard last week. They'd gone mouldy :)

oigetoffmycheese · 19/06/2018 15:01

For all those asking...meme:

an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.

purpleorchidwhite · 19/06/2018 15:01

I love this post!

This was me when I turned 48. With each passing day I feel I am slipping, less in touch with my youth.

I value sewing, cooking a nice meal and quiet things. Simple pleasures.

I always enjoyed listening to my son's choice of music, now it's classic FM for me.

Gone are the days I'd go and watch a band or thrill seek.

It all happened rather rapidly when I reached 48.

Flooffloof · 19/06/2018 15:02

Oh i hear ya, the gardening thing is a mystery, two years ago I could care less, last year I had to do something with the Damn garden and now I know what salvia looks like? And I have PLANS for the rest of it. What the fuck happened to me?
I wear men's clothes often, cos pockets.
I would say I don't care what others think of this new me, but I never have cared what others may think.
But yeah, gardening.

pandamodium · 19/06/2018 15:04

I'm 29 and can relate to absolutely all you say.

I'm actually relieved I'm booked for surgery next month on my 30th so I don't have to celebrate.

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 15:05

Here's a relevant meme Smile

KaliforniaDreamz · 19/06/2018 15:06

Also BOLD fail as iam so crap at being young

ThatsPoker · 19/06/2018 15:06

holds hand up My name is ThatsPoker and I am 40 and I love gardening too! I was a metal girl back in the day, took drugs, lived in East London, went clubbing all night and now I love Early Grey tea, weeding the garden, garden centres (so much tatt to buy) and a good book before bed.

WhatsGoingOnEh - we may be one and the same. I very much appreciate your 'values' and so many others on this thread too!

KaliforniaDreamz · 19/06/2018 15:06

omg Absolutely crying

AbsolutelyBeginning · 19/06/2018 15:07

The middle-aged Rick Springfield:-

to feel I've become middle-aged and irrelevant almost overnight?
Dontsweathesmallstuff · 19/06/2018 15:08

Just turned 47 here too. Embracing middle age and thoroughly enjoying not giving a crap about lots of irrelevant stuff anymore.

Not quite ready to give up dyeing my hair yet though.

The dcs are keeping me feeling younger though. Dc3 only 5, but my best friend from school is a granny!

Dh (50)said a couple of days ago, - its a good job we've got the kids to keep us feeling young or we'd be looking at sheltered housing, saga holidays and knitting clubsGrin

esk1mo · 19/06/2018 15:08

im in my 20s and feel this way. i see it as my personality, nothing to do with age imo.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 19/06/2018 15:10

Ha well if you are then so am I and I’m 28! I like all the things you like it seems :)

Ohyesiam · 19/06/2018 15:12

It’s such a relief.
I feel I’m as I’m meant to be, and that’s a first!

TheLastNigel · 19/06/2018 15:13

I'm 38 and I feel like this. I caught myself deliberately watching coverage of the Chelsea flower show this year and really fancied going.
And I just can't be arsed with lots of the stuff I used to be bothered about-being on trend etc-just less interested all together. It's quite liberating.

Karigan198 · 19/06/2018 15:13

Got to say I feel fitter and have more energy now at 40 than I did at 30.

Gardening I do because I have to if I want the garden to look nice.

Early nights I do because my partner (8 years younger than me) likes them 🙄. Although I’m slowing weaning him to later.

I never did like clubs and pubs that were noisy so not sure that counts.

I hate evenings in. Particularly in summer when there is so much to do.

Maybe I’m regressing 🤔

Southfields · 19/06/2018 15:13

For you, OP.

to feel I've become middle-aged and irrelevant almost overnight?
