To be gutted that someone on my street has painted the outside of their house?

I know IABU but still it pisses me off! The street was built in 1880s, two rows of terraces facing one another. They are sandstone and every single one is completely beautiful. The only painting people do is their front doors.

Someone has bought one of them and today ive come home and all the stonework around the door and windows has been painted. Additionally the pattern carved into the stone has been filled in and flattened before painting.

Its so disappointing as its the only street like this for miles its unique and beautiful and old. And now one house sticks out lile a sore thumb.

I know I know its their house etc. Iabu. But im so sad!

The very definition of a first world problem...

...but it would really annoy me too Blush

NewYearNewMe18 · 18/06/2018 19:16

That would upset me too - but unless the buildings are listed, there's little you can do.

Is your street in a conservation area or the houses grade listed because if they are they’ll be in big shit from the council planning dept for doing that.

NapQueen · 18/06/2018 19:17

They arent listed, but I may be tempted to speak with local planners. Not that id imagine they can do much which is a shame.

Although my neighbour a few years ago decided to graffiti the outside of his own house and it was on google street view if that makes you feel better! Grin

Polyethyl · 18/06/2018 19:19

Some people are Philistines.
Check whether your street is a conservation area or listed.
But even if it is there is probably little you can do.

Lycanthropology · 18/06/2018 19:20

Makes you wonder why people would buy a beautiful, historic, architecturally interesting house then do this to it.

Would annoying me too. YANBU

littlepeas · 18/06/2018 19:20

I live in a much newer house than that and we’re not allowed to paint our house any colour than the one it already is (off white) because of rules set by the council when it was built - we are right next to a listed building. You are not allowed to park a caravan on your drive and various other rules too. I wonder if there are any protections like that on your street?

BarbaraOcumbungles · 18/06/2018 19:20

Some people didn’t ought to be allowed to buy houses 😬

The house doesn’t have to be listed but may be in a conservation area. Speak to the planners, someone who does this may do other modifications that are not in keeping. I would normally say that they have bought the property and it is up to them what they do, but it does sound really out of keeping with the others.

Bluetrews25 · 18/06/2018 19:29

The owners aren't called Jack and Vera, are they?

AlmostPerfect1955 · 18/06/2018 19:29

I live in a Terrace of 4 listed 200 year old houses. They have always been painted a dark cream colour and looked like a beautiful single building. Until last summer when the end one painted their’s dark grey...... unfortunately the listing doesn’t include the colour 😔

Firesuit · 18/06/2018 19:30

One of the laws I will bring in when I'm dictator is that all rows of terraced houses will have to conform to agreed rules with regard to appearance. (Common rules for each terrace to be decided by democratic majority of occupants.)

NapQueen · 18/06/2018 19:30

This is the closest I can find, we dont have the stairs or gates. But same stone, same bays, etc.

To be gutted that someone on my street has painted the outside of their house?

Lots of places are conservation areas to prevent people doing precisely this. Worth checking. A conservation area can cover an entire settlement. It's entirely separate to listed status.

If it's not already, it might be worth pushing the council on it to protect the street for the future.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/06/2018 19:32

Oh dear your poor neighbours. Everyone on the street hates them now.

Unless of course it catches on, and people on your road all start jazzing up the stonework round their windows. You'll have no choice but to move I'm afraid.

NapQueen · 18/06/2018 19:34

Im already on the market (need more space as mine is a flat) but up until they painted was gutted to go.

Im gonna turn into one of those old biddies "I remember when this street was all stone I do".

Such a shame OP , I am surprised there isn't a covenant prohibiting this .

wendywoopywoo222 · 18/06/2018 19:34

Check with your local planning office. If it's not in keeping with the rest of the area or alters the street scene there may be something they can do. Certainly worth asking.

NapQueen · 18/06/2018 19:35

I am going to email and ask.

Some people are bloody ignorant and just don’t care.
There was a lovely, characterful Victorian house, with its own little tower in our street, and some bastard bought it, built a horrible garage and a bloody awful fence, with corrugated iron bits on it, and basically was a vandal, completely ruined a it was a eye sore. Unfortunately being in SouthAfrica no one really cared, except the neighbours. I wish we had be able to buy it, it used to make me so angry to walk past it with our dogs.

dancerdancer · 18/06/2018 19:37

Name changed as this may be outing. But on my seaside town road of lovely pastel coloured houses and town houses (light pink, light yellow, white, baby blue etc), one of the owners has decided to paint their house bright purple. And even worse than that, they started it months ago and have done approx 1 quarter of a single wall. It’s very noticeable.
