To hate 'Mummy Merch'

ExpectingToFly · 17/06/2018 13:22

Am I the only one who cringes with all this mummy merch flying about? Mum t shirts and mummy milestone cards etc. I just do not understand it. Am I weird? I feel like everyone around me is a 'proud Mummy' and it makes me wanna vom.

I've got 3 daughters all ivf and I love them so much but don't feel as though I need to walk round with a t-shirt saying mummy on it or taking pics with a card saying 'mumwin' Envy.

No, I don't like it either. it's all cringey shite.

ballroompink · 17/06/2018 13:54

I feel like it's taking over on Instagram. Everything's mum-themed t-shirts/wine jokes/#mumwin/#friyay/#yougotthismama/#mumtribe/#mumgoals etc. etc. and it's so overdone now. I get the whole 'all in this together' encouragement/mum cameraderie vibe but it's a bit cringe.

theWarOnPeace · 17/06/2018 14:17

All these tees and jumpers saying ‘mama’ and ‘papa’ are about as annoying to me as those ridiculous FB posts saying “share if you love your kids” or some other bloody obvious nonsense. No shit Sherlock, you love your kids?! I have quite a massive dislike of mum or dad being a person’s complete identity, it’s usually mums that end of losing their sense of who they are when they have children. I feel like these stupid mum clothes just add to that.

Pigeonpost · 17/06/2018 14:21

Yup, those sweatshirts that say MOTHER on them make me want to puke. Same company also does ones saying "est 2007" (or whatever year you first became a mother), it's cringeworthy. I really struggled to have kids and at one point thought I never would but I still have absolutely no desire to label myself as Mother. I am one but it doesn't define me!

PhilODox · 17/06/2018 14:24

You don't actually have to buy them...

DaveyouareanuttertwatDave · 17/06/2018 14:26

Using the word 'merch' is much worse........sorry!

MontyBeaujangles · 17/06/2018 14:32

I haven't seen any of this stuff? I'm on instagram and haven't come across it. I'm 20 weeks pregnant and have bought a baby grow that says 'I love mummy' on it. I think it's cute. Not sure I would wear any of it myself though Confused

caithuait · 17/06/2018 14:36

it's cringey as hell. Anything like 'full time mummy' on Facebook makes me want to come too.

tillytrotter1 · 17/06/2018 14:39

I have always had a simple rule, clothes with slogans on them are vulgar.

NeepNeepNeep · 17/06/2018 14:39

The only things I wear to advertise my motherhood are the shadows under my eyes, grey hair and general harassed air. All for free #smug

Floottoot · 17/06/2018 14:41

The Selfish Mother brand of t shirts and sweatshirts, with "Mother", "since 2006" etc on donate a large % to women's and children's charities - so not all that cringey IMO.

PurpleDaisies · 17/06/2018 14:42

Is this a thing? I’ve never seen anyone wearing it.

Amanduh · 17/06/2018 14:44

I like the Selfish Mother ones runs and hides but yes they’re for charity too so it’s all a good cause!

MaisyPops · 17/06/2018 14:46

I like some small things. E.g. One of my friends was given a mummy travel mug for work for mother's day. It's a bit cheesy but quite understated.

I'm not a fan of children's clothes saying 'Mommy's boy' or 'daddy's princess'.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/06/2018 14:47

I don’t like slogan clothes for me or my dc. Anything like I love daddy or mummys little princess makes me cringe.

I don’t mind some other bits, I have a mug that says maker of boys on( I have 3 ds) which makes me smile but that’s about it.

BustopherJones · 17/06/2018 14:48

All the ‘cool like daddy’ onesies that I’ve seen in the run up to Father’s Day also annoy me. I’m not sure why really. The ‘I love grandma’ ones are even worse - they’re like those cards ‘to my son on his birthday’, ‘to a special aunt this Christmas’, ‘to my recently divorced window cleaner on his hazard perception test’. Whole family matching pyjamas are fine, though. Go big or go home.

EeebyMum · 17/06/2018 14:51

It’s all bullshit

LisaSimpsonsbff · 17/06/2018 14:55

Not yet a mother so while I'm not keen on the mummy stuff maybe I don't get it - but as a pregnant woman I really hate pregnancy themed stuff. I saw this morning that H&M sell maternity tops that say 'the next generation' and there was a woman in antenatal wearing a T-shirt that said 'preggosaurus rex' the other day, which was particularly bemusing - we all are! They're just so twee and also attention-seeking - people comment enough when you're pregnant, do you really need to wear a top declaring it so no passerby can possibly be left unaware?!

Gemini69 · 17/06/2018 14:58

I've not seen any of this stuff.. where is it ? Flowers

Floottoot · 17/06/2018 15:02

Hygge · 17/06/2018 15:05

What is a Mummy Milestone card?

YANBU, by the way, but these are a new one on me.

Justanewname · 17/06/2018 15:08

I love all that stuff. The tackier the better. I can’t quite bring myself to spend £60 on a selfish mother hoodie but I love my mummy mug.

CadyHeron · 17/06/2018 15:09

Not my thing, totally not my thing. I get that it's other people's thing though, otherwise it wouldn't be a thing... Grin
So I just don't buy them and think each to their own

Peartree17 · 17/06/2018 15:15

Don't buy the clothing (unless you both need it and love it, of course) and if the consequent absence of the donation to the worthwhile charities from the companies concerned bothers you, just give the money you would otherwise have spent on the purchase directly to the charity. Cut out the middle man, don't consume the resources involved in making the T shirt, don't add to landfill when you eventually dump the item.

Anything like 'full time mummy' on Facebook makes me want to come too.

That is VERY good social media posting.
