to ask you how clean your house is?

Long time lurker here and only just plucked up the courage to create my own account... I see a lot of threads where people post regarding their standards of cleanliness/tidiness and there is more often than not, a disputed regarding 'the norm', which has prompted me to join and ask:

  • how clean is your house?
  • how clean is your car?
  • do you clean it yourself?
  • do you hire a cleaner?
  • what do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable? (I bloody hate it!)

My house is fairly clean but I can see dust building up in corners and my windows need washing. My car is horrid. It's disgusting and I'm getting it valeted on Monday! I'm dreading the looks on their faces when they see it. I can't afford a cleaner, so clean myself, and have yet to find a routine or way to make cleaning fun/easy/more enjoyable...

Too many loos, too many icky places to clean.

Celticmombella · 17/06/2018 20:51

Rooms I don't use day to day are very clean. Rooms I use daily are a mess... The counters are clean and floors are washed but the rooms I use daily look like a tornado went though them. I try my best. I did get a skip a few weeks ago and it was amazing... I got rid of such much crap so now it's just daily mess.

Bluelonerose · 17/06/2018 20:51

House. I try. I HAVE to sweep and hoover downstairs everyday as the cats think the majority of cat litter needs to be thrown around rather than over their shit Hmm

I try to keep dust down, upstairs tidy but with the exception of Dds room (which you need a hazmat suit to enter) I thinks it's ok.
There might be a little dust build up under things but it's 99% tidy.

My car is clean inside (except the floor) the outside however has clean me written all over it in the dirt. Grin
In my defence I need a new hosepipe and doing it without is a pita.

FurForksSake · 17/06/2018 20:58

Right now, very clean and tidy as have started following TOMM, if I can keep it up I will be delighted. 30 minutes a day and no cleaning at the weekends and it is lovely looking. My car... well I have a 2 and 5 year old and at the end of the day I often have a can on the go and they have snacks and rubbish doesn't always make it in. I try and shit tip it once a week. It never gets washed but I do do the inside once every three months.

Iseveryusernamealreadytaken · 17/06/2018 21:02

  • how clean is your house?

It's an absolute tip. I wash the dishes, wash the clothes, empty the bins and clean up any spills and that's about it.

  • how clean is your car?

Don't currently have one.

  • do you clean it yourself?

No, I don't clean the house myself. Unfortunately, there is no one else here to do it for me.

  • do you hire a cleaner?

No.

  • what do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable?

I just leave the mess and go out and enjoy life. Grin

Actually, it's not normally this bad but the weather's too nice at the moment to be indoors and when I am indoors I'm spending my time faffing about on mumsnet

Nofilter · 17/06/2018 21:07

I’d say mine is borderline... it never gets to the point where it’s awful but I certainly don’t do things unless they look like they need doing IYSWIM.

Few things overdue - towel rail polishing - it has about 40 rungs, blinds dusting etc...

Decluttering is the way forward I think too... just a few bits here and there and then suddenly you’ve thrown loads of junk away and cleaned a room - best feeling ever!

sherazade · 17/06/2018 21:22

Fairly clean and tidy - as much as it can be with two sloppy teens and a very very destructive toddler .
Living room :
Wooden floors and leather sofas make everything easy to wipe down . A bucket of hot water and wood soap with a mop over all floors once a week and wipe down the sofas with a damp cloth every few days .
I move the sofas and vacuum the corners and crevices as well as the stairs every other day . Blinds get a shake but to be honest they need cleaning and so do my windows . Any tips on cleaning blinds ? I dust them every now and again but I think they need a proper clean and I haven't got the time . I dust the window frames every other day . Wooden dining table wipe down with plain water and an e cloth twice a day. Wipe doors down once a week.

Kitchen
Mop floor every night and mid day if needed. Wipe surfaces several times a day . Arrange and tidy out cupboards weekly . Clean cooker hob after every use.

Bathrooms
Cleaned properly once a week , loos daily and wiped over every 1/2 days

Bedrooms
Sheets weekly . Vacuum and dust weekly and polish mirrors weekly .

Laundry folded and put away daily .
Not much clutter - I de clutter every few weeks

The car gets valeted every four weeks and is fine .

Serendipite · 17/06/2018 22:18

Not dirty but messy. It seems I can't keep my house clean or not messy.

thelasttudor · 17/06/2018 22:24

This thread has made me laugh.

Those posters who say it doesn't take 2 mins to clean as you go and then proceed to list 50 jobs that they do in passing which would take any mortal soul half the day to do!

I do like my house a bit clean and tidy but it really doesn't feature as massively important compared to most other stuff I like to do with my time.

Thesearepearls · 17/06/2018 22:33

i think we need to move

I love our house but definitely we need to move

We've been here for 21 years and the accumulated clutter beggars belief

I can't go into our garage. In there lies so much rubbish. I'd have a heart attack and call for the nearest skip firm.

The first thing that would strike you is a toboggan. The DCs are 18 and 20. They are not going to use the toboggan. The next thing is the bikes - dear oh lord we have so many bikes. Then the skis. DH's skis from when he was 18. Then we have a million pots of paint. Don't ask. Then there are a million mysterious gizmos.plus a rowing machine and a stationary bike.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 17/06/2018 23:00

I tidy up after myself, and the house is "straight". But it needs a really deep clean! DH is in charge of bathrooms, which obviously means they're now both mingy bacterial swamps. I'm in charge of everything else, but I've not been feeling well and I work every day, so it's all gone a bit manky.

My car is ok.

TheMonkeyMummy · 18/06/2018 00:11

My place is a mess. It destroys my soul and I hate being in it. Currently have no time and am so tired that once all the kids are in bed, I flake.

Would like to toss a match and walk away from it all.

Thesearepearls · 18/06/2018 00:18

@Monkeymummy I feel like that sometimes - we need a plan. How about we have a joint cleaning splurge? It might involve hiring skips. Going into areas that we close our eyes to.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 18/06/2018 00:32

I haven't RTFT, but am being brave and telling the truth...
My house is disgusting. We live in filth - not exactly crime scene Kim and Aggie run screaming, but I would never invite anyone round cos I am embarrassed.
Why it's this way is a long story, but to answer your original question, "totally unclean" Sad

kamilahbobo · 18/06/2018 00:40

I clean my house every morning (hoover dusting and bathroom) and in afternoon we tidy around with my son. Kitchen is washed every night after whole day of cooking ..Once a week over weekend I would do selected area like windows, mopping, inside cupboards..My car is also spotless. In general not a clean freak but on the boundary haha. I only use most natural cleaning products also so it's healthy for us and environment..

lashy · 18/06/2018 00:52

Very clean. My husband claims I'm the only person who can take half an hour to vacuum one room. He's exaggerating. I do like to get around the skirting boards and nooks and crannies with the various tools though.
Windows and window sills regularly get a good cleaning.
When we moved in I cleaned all the edges of the windows (the bits you only see when the window is open) as they looked like they'd never been done. I also removed all the ventilation covers, soaked them and refitted them (had been full of webs and 10 years worth of grime).
I find it's far easier, and quicker, to keep on top the cleaning than let it build up.
Cleaning is done by myself. Never had a cleaner. My car is very clean too.

beclev24 · 18/06/2018 01:03

car- gross. a million jackets, pens, odd bits of lego, half eaten snacks etc, Embarrassing

House- generally not too bad. We have a cleaner once a week, The other days i tidy up/ wipe down surfaces , sweep kitchen floor, do dishes plus laundry. most days i'd be pretty happy for someone to drop by, although by the end of the weekend it gets a bitsilted up with toys/ dishes/ general clutter and needs a blitz on monday morning. 3 DC- no pets.

TotHappy · 18/06/2018 01:46

Bedrooms (3) are filthy. I haven't cleaned them in 6 months, other than change the sheets and do laundry. They're always the last thing.
Dh supposedly took on the bathroom as his 'job' 6 months ago. Just one bathroom which I used to clean weekly. He did it once (not to my standard) and it's been a shit tipq since. I clean it when i cant bear it anymore - think I've been doing it monthly or so? Going to have to cave tomorrow as my boss is coming round. The bastard! Well, he can whistle for me doing the bedrooms!
I work 10 hours a week, mostly from home, and other than that am sahm to a toddler. The deal was I would give up work to be housewife/mother... I didn't realise how all consuming the 'mother' part would be. I feel guilty cleaning when my daughter wants to play with me, but then dh gives me grief if he thinks the house is too messy (and it is). Also being at home all the time generates so much MORE mess!

And then there's the soul-destroying aspect - I can clean something and by the end of the day you wouldn't know I'd done it. So what's the point?

TotHappy · 18/06/2018 02:03

Haha haha... Just watched the 30 min video of the organised mum cleaning 4 bedrooms... I would have to spend that long just picking up and putting away crap in the bedrooms. Hers are spotless to begin with compared with mine.

Kingsclerelass · 18/06/2018 02:31

I do it all myself.

In my house, the kitchen & bathrooms are clean, the sitting room and two bedrooms are ok-ish unless we’ve been away for the weekend. The dining room and spare bedroom need hoovering/dusting before visitors arrive. And the utility room is a tip so I keep the door shut.

My car reflects our rural location Smile

Kingsclerelass · 18/06/2018 02:41

Towel rail polishing ! Confused

GertieMotherwell · 18/06/2018 02:58

how clean is your house?
It’s fine, but we need a declutter
how clean is your car?
Outside clean and inside ok
do you clean it yourself?
House - yes. Car - outside no, inside yes
do you hire a cleaner?
No
what do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable? (I bloody hate it!)
Ensure I’m dressed. Music on. Set a timer
Delegate amongst other family members

bigbumval · 18/06/2018 07:05

It's the dogs. The bleedin' dogs.
They mess everything up. Don't get me started on the floors, sick of mopping them.

tomhazard · 18/06/2018 07:40

I have a weekly cleaner. If I didn't my house would be awful. In between her visits I will maintain the kitchen and sweep/vacuum the floors.
Every couple of months DH and I pull out the beds / large furniture and vacuum behind and do the skirting boards. This is done reluctantly but it is always gross so needs must!
I'm not a clean-freak and for me it is a major chore.

Mousefunky · 18/06/2018 07:43

According to my nan it is an absolute disgrace but she is incredibly house proud and I would argue suffers from OCD, everything is PRISTINE at all times.

It’s not perfect but with three young DC I wouldn’t expect it to be. It’s never dirty and there’s a huge difference between messy and dirty. I keep on top of the kitchen, washing, bed linen, hoovering and the bathroom.
