AIBU?

to ask you how clean your house is?

Long time lurker here and only just plucked up the courage to create my own account... I see a lot of threads where people post regarding their standards of cleanliness/tidiness and there is more often than not, a disputed regarding 'the norm', which has prompted me to join and ask:

  • how clean is your house?
  • how clean is your car?
  • do you clean it yourself?
  • do you hire a cleaner?
  • what do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable? (I bloody hate it!)

My house is fairly clean but I can see dust building up in corners and my windows need washing. My car is horrid. It's disgusting and I'm getting it valeted on Monday! I'm dreading the looks on their faces when they see it. I can't afford a cleaner, so clean myself, and have yet to find a routine or way to make cleaning fun/easy/more enjoyable...

My home is currently okish. It's reasonably tidy, but not completely organised. I'm on top of the laundry, dp keeps the washing from piling up and cleans the kitchen daily. We Hoover most days, and I wipe down the surfaces in the lounge etc most days. I clean the bathroom a couple of times a week and wipe round with baby wipes in between. Dds room is usually tidy and if it isn't it's only toys that need putting away. Our room needs some work, but it's always the last priority as no-one but myself and dp see it. Sheets are washed weekly, towels are washed every couple of days. We don't have a cleaner, but I have a wonderful dp who pulls his weight.

Some deep cleaning jobs need doing. The windows need cleaning and the grout in the bathroom looks a bit grotty. I could do with having a clear out and going a bit more minimalist. It's perfectly livable though, if a bit messy sometimes.

The car is cleaned by the car cleaning people about once a month. It needs it more often really and can get quite gross. We live in a flat though and there is no way to use the Hoover on the car.

Both car and house very clean, I run a zero tolerance system to clutter and anything that comes in that isn't beautiful, useful or both goes straight in the charity bag.

My house is always visitor ready but not everyone likes a spotless house, sometimes I get asked 'but where is everything?' and I say it is in the charity shop or recycling plant.

Children's toys and crafts aside, we have treasures and special shells and stones but everything has a home. Everything gets put immediately back and all the family have learnt to do this (except for toys and we are relaxed about them being anywhere whilst children are at home and are playing)

We clean the whole house top to bottom every week, big spring clean every change of season season and windows every fortnight. Car valet once a week or more if it is very dirty.

A carpet washer changed my life and has saved me thousands.

House is immaculate 90% of the time.
Car is in the circle of shame 90% of the time.

My house is very clean but sometimes a bit untidy. I wipe round the bathrooms/kitchen, hoover, change bins etc every day and ‘deep clean’ every week along with fresh bedding, towels, oven clean and steam the floors but with young DC there are sometimes toys etc laying around while we eat or washing to be put away.

My car however is frankly embarrassing Grin

It’s taken me a while to get in to cleaning but now I have a routine and products I like using (effective and smell nice) it’s no hassle and it’s so much easier to keep on top of it 10 mins a day rather than it then in to such a momentous job it’s overwhelming

My system is that I clean on Sunday so I enjoy just one morning of waking up to cleanliness and then it's a steep downhill slope from there. By about Tuesday evening I'm embarrassed to have anyone over. It's so hard with work, 3x kids ( teens and toddler), partners shift pattern, fatigue from day very etc. The are 5 of is living in a small flat so it gets dirty and messy very quickly. Flipside- doesn't take long to get clean again. Car gross.

-how clean is your house? Clean. Like show home clean and tidy. Takes a lot of effort though to keep it that way

- how clean is your car? Washed outside and vacuumed inside weekly. I have DH to thank for that though!
- do you clean it yourself? yes, but it takes a lot of time and effort
- do you hire a cleaner? no
- what do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable? (I bloody hate it!) I think its something you either love or hate. I actually love cleaning and tidying, hence why its always clean!

House is pretty average. I never waste a journey and I constantly return things to their correct room when I’m moving around the house. I actually clean bathrooms etc once a week and everywhere else is just maintained. A deep clean is overdue.

Car is always clean because it’s mine and I don’t allow the other people who I have to live with to ruin it. Same as my desk at work!

My house is ever changing throughout the day as I ha e lots of children, cats, dogs and chickens! I also cook from scratch three times a day and bake most days so the kitchen and the rest of the house go from messy to sparkling about three times a day!

It's definitely not dirty, but there's usually piles of washing waiting to go away, I ha e a cleaner three times a week so that helps a lot, I tend to concentrate on caring for the children and animals, cooking ,baking and looking after the kidsSmile

Dh and I both work from home so he does the cleaning in between the cleaner coming and he also does the diy/gardening.

My house is a total mess. Single parent of 2 young kids, also working p/t. The house gets a bit of a blitz about once a fortnight when the kids are with their dad but generally I'd rather enjoy time with the kids or relax on a rare night off than clean. I stay on top of the basics (laundry/ dishes/ bathroom) and I'm trying to teach the kids to pick up after themselves but we have pets and a big garden, we cook/ bake/ craft/ build dens and really life's too short for obsessive cleaning. I have a little day dream that when they're both older and more independent I'll spend my time on diy and homemaking but probably I'll just work longer hours and have more of a social life.

House is spotless but car is a disgrace. I get car cleaned inside and out every 6 weeks and every time I say that I won't allow the children to eat in it. This lasts for about a week then it's back to bits of breadsticks , raisins, rotting fruit and crisps on the seats and in the foot wells plus toys, hair bands and god knows what else. OH is really untidy at home but car is always spotless but as I say to him it's only because the children very rarely go in his

My house is always a mess. Not sure how people keep their houses looking clean. We have a cleaner coming twice a week for 3-4 hours each time and we still can not keep it looking tidy. Its hygienic though, as everything is wipe, vacuumed and moped. But for some reason, after she cleans it all gets a meds again! I have two kids ages 4 and 6, plus a new puppy....house was messy before the puppy. We don't own a car, but I'm sure that would be messy too if we did.

House is kept clean and tidy. I enjoy cleaning so it’s not really a chore. I just stick my Netflix show on the iPad and crack on. The car... there’s zero clutter or garbage but it’s filthy. It’s really hard to keep on top of with three dogs in and out of it constantly. The interior is coated in white dog hair Blush

I really really hate cleaning but I also hate living in a house that is not clean. My house is reasonably clean but it is also cluttered in bedroom because we both have too much clothing to fit into wardrobe and drawers. Toys in lounge overflow toy box and it really does need sorting out and some taken to charity. Oven cleaned by oven man twice a year. we had a cleaner for many years but she retired and we tried two others but they were not very good or reliable so now manage without as I am at home all day. My dh car is spotless inside and out but mine has swimming kit bag and enormous cricket kit bag in as well as wet wipes, tissues, several bottles of water, several carrier bags and a spare pair of flat shoes. To make myself clean I just imagine people turning up unexpectedly as being horrified so try to clean up after everyone.

How clean is your house? Shit tip
How clean is your car? Shit tip
Do you clean yourself? Yes but I might as well not bother
Do you hire a cleaner? No, we had a cleaner when I lived with my mum and dad, and I just felt weird about it
What do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable? get it done as quick as possible so I can enjoy not doing it until its yet again a shit tip in about an hour.

House - average. Could do with a tidy but it's not hoarder levels. Do it myself

Car - don't ask. Horse plus being a home carer...
I do nothing with the car apart from empty rubbish out of it. I pay a guy every so often who turns up and says "give me 2... ok, 4 hours"
He charges about £30 and it comes back looking like it's out the showroom

IslaBoots That always makes me laugh. I also have two dogs and recently had a workman here. When he first came in he said "I thought you said you had dogs". I do, my house doesn't act or smell like a kennel though. Grin

It's clean but I wish it was cleaner,my DH doesn't agree with me and thinks that my standards are to high and that I want a show home,I won't deny it I do,but then I do have OCD.

We both clean it between us,he does more of the lions share now though because I became disabled.

There's 7 of us(we have 5DC) and we have 3 Dogs and 2 Rabbits and I know our house dosen't look the way alot of people would expect it to look, they expect it to be a mess because of the amount of children and pets we have, but if we could get a cleaner I would.

The car is another matter,it's not awful(it's a new car)but it does need a hoover and I've just bought a car hoover so my DH has no excuse now Grin

how clean is your house?
Always tidy and very clean

how clean is your car?
I don't have my own car, H's car is manky but he has it valeted every three months

do you clean it yourself?
Yes I do all cleaning here.

do you hire a cleaner?
No.

what do you do to make cleaning more enjoyable?
Little and often so it's never a big job and have a task a day to complete. I play audiobooks whilst I clean as well so barely notice the time it takes.

My house looks clean and tidy on the surface but under closer inspection, not so much. I have two young children and they make a mess faster than I can clean.
I never leave dishes and the kitchen is wiped down every night but the floors only get mopped every few weeks (I don’t own a mop so do it on my hands and knees).
Dust the living room once a week, hoover the whole house once every day and always put toys away before bed.
Bathroom is cleaned about once a week.
Car is foul. I allow the kids to eat it and it only days after me cleaning it, there are ground crisps on the floor and spilled drink marks on the seat and various toys/jackets/packets/complete crap all over the floor.
Husband works away and I find it all a bit overwhelming to keep on top of on my own, along with entertaining the children.
My fridge is probably the worst; there is stuff in the back that I know went off ages ago that I keep meaning to deal with Blush

Clean-ish. I deep cleaned the kitchen yesterday. Working on de-cluttering and storage. Pretty much the house is always basically clean.

Report

Oh, I clean it myself (SAHM). And I hate cleaning.

My car is not clean. It needs to be cleaned. But I haven't even passed my test so it's only used at weekends so I never feel the need to clean it.
