Morrisons refused to let DD pretend to pay for the shopping...

Because my shopping included a bottle of wine.

Often pop to my local Morrisons for small top up shops. Popped there this morning to buy a few bits, including a bottle of wine. DD aged 3 likes to 'help' me at the self service checkout, scanning the shopping, and then at the end I lift her up and she uses my debit card to make the contactless payment, or puts the coins in etc.

Today as I was about to lift DD up to pay, the lady overseeing the checkouts rushed over to stop me and said DD wasn't allowed to pay for the shopping. She said it wasn't allowed as then the alcohol could actually be for her, or the debit card could actually be hers. When I pointed out that DD is only 3, and the debit card was mine, and it was clearly me really paying for the shopping she said it didn't matter Hmm

AIBU or is this completely bonkers? I could totally understand this if I had an older teenager with me but it feels like there is no common sense anymore Confused

World's gone mad

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 15/06/2018 19:38

For all they know you could have been an undercover shopper from trading standards or whatever, she is just doing her job. Pick your battles and all that.

DiddimusStench · 15/06/2018 19:38

That is pretty hilarious but I’m sure someone will be along in a mo to tell you why YABU

user1471530109 · 15/06/2018 19:38

Grin oh that is ridiculous! Surely that wasn't a memo 'no toddlers to pay for shopping if alcohol in'

Shumpalumpa · 15/06/2018 19:38

That is bonkers. Maybe an overky keen new starter?

Rockandrollwithit · 15/06/2018 19:39

😂

I'm having a very bad day and that actually cheered me up. Make sure you don't let your DD spend too extravegently on her debit card!! 😂😂

Sirzy · 15/06/2018 19:40

If it was caught by trading standards they would be in trouble.

Just like ds likes to order the puddings on the computer of the place we often go for a meal, but if we are ordering alcohol he isn’t allowed to because even though it’s unlikely if the staff where caught they would be in teouble.

Ubercornsdiscoball · 15/06/2018 19:40

There are pretty strict laws in place. While it seems crazy, shops have to be very very careful. I don’t blame them to be honest

nomorespaghetti · 15/06/2018 19:40

Ha! That's ridiculous! My 2 year old DD also likes to do contactless payments, earlier this week i was in m&s food buying a bottle of wine for father's day, and she did the payment. I guess that means the wine is hers now!

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 15/06/2018 19:40

Yup, ridiculous! But I got told off for letting my dd (14) carry a bag with a bottle of wine from the checkout in Aldi...

Dropdeadfredra · 15/06/2018 19:40

It's sad because the shop assistant would probably be bollocked by the management. The shop worker wouldn't give a toss, it's only because the rules are drummed into them. I sound like my mother but common sense really is dead.

Dobbythesockelf · 15/06/2018 19:41

My dd also 3 likes doing that as well. It's quite obvious the card is mine etc. No checkout staff have ever stopped this. How very odd.

Spidermansthong · 15/06/2018 19:41

I can see why you're annoyed, but once upon a time I use to have to represent retail staff who were being interviewed by trading standards for selling alcohol to those underage following 'sting' operations., so I understand why retail staff are so worried about this. Ultimately people lose their jobs.

Whiskeysourpuss · 15/06/2018 19:41

It's just the rules I'm afraid - I can't let my DD carry the bag if there's any alcohol in it even though at 16 she can drink it at home or have a glass of wine with food in a restaurant.

It could cost Morrison's their licence as essentially allowing your DD to "pay" even though it's your money would still be considered that your DD was buying the alcohol & therefore Morrison's would in fact be selling to a minor.

Boulshired · 15/06/2018 19:42

We live in a world were bosses will issue warnings for the slightest thing that staff have to play completely to the rules. She probably felt just as embarrassed.

PinkHeart5914 · 15/06/2018 19:42

How odd! I mean of course a 3 year old doesn’t get out the debit card for their own bank account or say crack open that wine mother I need my fix fgs!

Although once had an independent newsagent refuse me chewing gum because one of my toddlers was holding it along with his milkybar to hand to the lady and you know I might let him have chewing gum and he might choke Confused I don’t shop there now...

cadburyegg · 15/06/2018 19:43

Lol that’s ridiculous

pigsDOfly · 15/06/2018 19:44

Does seem rather ridiculous but given that the person in control of the checkout could be in serious trouble if they allowed a minor to purchase alcohol I imagine they're sticking to the absolute letter of the law rather than risk the possibility of losing their job, even that were unlikely to happen.

ItsNachoCheese · 15/06/2018 19:44

Imagine buying wine for your 3yr old... GrinGrin yanbu at all the worlds went mad

halfwitpicker · 15/06/2018 19:44

Utter bollocks

user1488622199 · 15/06/2018 19:44

I vaguely remember from my training in my retail job years ago that the person who sells the product illegally is personally liable for a fine, not the store. I wouldn’t risk it either if I was on the check out

Timeisslippingaway · 15/06/2018 19:46

Once I was asked for I'd in asda to by butter knifes 😂. I didn't have any and they refused to sell them to me. I was 27 😂

Sirzy · 15/06/2018 19:46

Out of interest those who think it’s ok for a 3 year old to buy it what age does it stop being ok? The laws on selling to minors are obviously there for a reason.

JaretsGirlfren · 15/06/2018 19:46

I bought a few bits in wilko’s the other day and with my hands full after I’d paid I asked my DD6 to grab the scratch card I’d also bought. The cashier snatched it back and said I had to carry it or she’d chuck it!

ilovesooty · 15/06/2018 19:47

I think the employee was absolutely right.
