To think this is petty

I live in a flat and our bins haven't been put out for 6 weeks now. I think we missed 2 collections. Therefore our bins have been overflowing. I have been taking my rubbish elsewhere as I don't create a lot. Someone else dealt with some of the bin bags, but with 10 flats there are a lot. I think that it is a particularly bad time and people also don't recycle. The loose bin bags have been ripped open and tidied since.

Anyway, I complained to the management company who I think did nothing and the council. I got 2 excess bin bags, although it is the whole flats bin bags that haven't been put out.

Our bins are collected tomorrow and it is not 22:20. I noticed that the flats opposite had about 10 small bins with plenty of room so I put a few smaller bins in. A house opposite had a small bin which was half full. I put a half-full bin bag in it which was very light. Probably bag for life size. All the bins that I used could close their lids completely.

As soon as I'd done it a man came out, got the bin out the wheelie bin and dumped it next to one of the public rubbish bins. They are collected tomorrow morning!

Am I being unreasonable to think that that is petty? I wouldn't ordinarily do this but surely it is better than looking at overflowing bins and rubbish all of the floor which might promote rats. And he was effectively fly-tipping. His bin was still only 3/4 full after I'd put the bin in. What was he gaining?

Like I said, I wouldn't ordanarily do this, but our bins have got out of hand and if they aren't collected again the problem will escalate and they are collected in about 12 hours.

Sorry if I don't understand, but why aren't you taking your bins out to be collected? Is it giant communal metal bins that you can't move? Or is it individual bins for each flat? Surely it's your responsbility to put your bins on the street for emptying?

novalia89 · 14/06/2018 22:38

I was away last time they were collected and no one put them out. We don't have a large communal bin just 5 slightly larger grey bins which are communal. There must have been about 30 extra bin bags.

I seem to be the only one that puts the bins out and brings them in. I put up a note in the hallway complaining about the bins and someone then put them out last Friday, the wrong week. It's hard with a flat of 10 because if someone does something bad, it jeopardises all of the communal bins. The recycling bins have rubbish in them too. People don't care even though a rat, fox, cat or something ripped all of the bins apart. If I only put 1 bin out, the rest won't get collected.

I didn't ask because I spread a lot of the bin bags out down 2 streets. It took me 30 minutes. Asking too would have taken far too long and I went down the cheeky route because I am desparate.

Another one not understanding why you don't put your own bin out?

Also, very rude not to ask to use other peoples bins!!

Buzzlightyearsbumchin · 14/06/2018 22:42

I'd be fucked off if someone put rubbish in my bin.

I quite often stick extra rubbish out last minute, also the council can come and randomly spot check bins around here and issue warnings for things not being recycled.

You should have asked.

ChesterCake · 14/06/2018 22:42

We usually put a our last bin bag out into the big bin about 7am on the way to work so he may have been ‘saving’ the room in his bin for similar?

SnapAndFart · 14/06/2018 22:42

YABU. My new neighbour did this to me, but I still had stuff to put in mine.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 14/06/2018 22:43

YABVU. He was not being petty; you were being cheeky.

It is not acceptable to use someone else’s bin without permission. What if they had rubbish to put in in the morning? I often put mine in the bins just before they’re collected and I couldn’t if someone a cheeky fucker like you put theirs in mine.

Rocinante1 · 14/06/2018 22:44

So you spent 30 minutes spreading rubbish around other bins... when it would have taken maybe 10 minutes to put all your own bins out? I'm not seeing the genius in your plan.

I don’t understand this.

Who is responsible for putting your bins out? Why did you go fly tipping down the road?

AtomicGlitterBomb · 14/06/2018 22:49

I’d have dumped the rubbish bag on your doorstep.

You are being a CF.
You have no right to dump your rubbish in other peoples bin, if you don’t have room for it in your own bin you have to take it to the tip.

MapMyMum · 14/06/2018 22:52

I'm not sure if you have pay by weight where you are, but we do and it would seriously piss me off. Even without it I dont want someone elses rubbish in my bin ffs

butlerswharf · 14/06/2018 22:53

Flytipping in your neighbours' bins is a bit shitty to be fair.

CluedoAddict · 14/06/2018 22:56

You can't put rubbish in anyone's bin without asking. They might have their own bags to add to them tomorrow.

novalia89 · 14/06/2018 22:58

I normally put the bins out even though it is everyone in the flats responsibility. I put 10 bins out this evening. Obviously, none of you live in a flat where no one else puts the bins out and you have communal bins which are a mess. Our bins are overflowing and the recycling gets contaminated with rubbish and is then not collected. I am not really sure why they haven't been collected. I think it might have been because there were loose bin bags next to them. I doubt he will have enough rubbish to fill the bin bag in the next 12 hours. Why didn't he just say something to me rather than dump it in the middle of the road?

Our bins are FULL Rocinante1. I couldn't just put them out because all of the bins have been full for weeks. And AtomicGlitterBomb I can't take 10 flats x 4-6 weeks worth of rubbish to the tip. I don't even have a car!

Can you phone your local council to collect the extra rubbish as a health hazard. Long shot I know. Make up a rota for bin duty and post it through each flat letterbox? Do you have residents meetings. The lazy fecks.

Namethatchange · 14/06/2018 22:59

I think you should be congratulated OP for actually bothering to try and fix the problem caused by the lazy wankers in your block. How 9 people can ignore the fact that bins need putting out and allow bags to continue to pile up is beyond me, they must stink and the risk of attracting rodents etc is huge. I'd probably be a bit annoyed if a stranger decided to use my bin though especially if I was planning on using it. Could you implement a system where 2 flats use and are responsible for 1 bin?

CluedoAddict · 14/06/2018 22:59

By the same token why didn't you ask his permission?

Moominfan · 14/06/2018 23:00

It wouldnt bother me in the slightest I'm really perplexed at these responses

Lazypuppy · 14/06/2018 23:01

Can you not get individual bins for flats? That's what we had and ours lived outside so never needed putting out anyway. Also, as we had no garden i rang council and got them to take away our garden bins and get more recycling ones.

Iceweasel · 14/06/2018 23:03

Share the bins out, one bin between two flats, put numbers on them. Then even if you end up being the one to take the bin out every week it's one bin not all five.

Buy a new bin from the council for your waste and recycling. Put your flat number on both and get a bin lock for both. Then you will always have a bin with space which no one else can use and you will always have it emptied.

Singlenotsingle · 14/06/2018 23:06

It wouldn't bother me. In fact if I've got excess rubbish or recycling I put in my neighbours bin! She's a reasonable person. She doesn't mind
