Do they end up manky if you live in a hard water area?

Oh god, just don't do it. Save yourself.

LadySpratt · 15/06/2018 05:44

I bought ours so DS can learn about boiling - plus it looks cool when the blue lights at the bottom are on. Every appliance we have has to have some form of descaler with each use (I always think of the Calgon ad), so we use a water filter jug (Brita), whose cartridges are recyclable.
If the kettle does get a build up of limescale because we haven’t changed the filter cartridge within good time (why does DH never realise?) then a quick session with a sachet of Oust does the trick.
We love the kettle, it’s our second one in 9 years.

Slapdasherie · 15/06/2018 05:52

You can use lemon to de-scale, I just toss half a used one in, probably every couple of months where I am.

Boil and leave it for a couple of hours then rinse thoroughly.

Makes it look pretty.

OrcinusOrca · 15/06/2018 06:18

My mum's is fine. She puts Brit's filtered water in it.

OutingMyDog · 15/06/2018 06:20

Great, now I have to check for slugs every time I use the kettle.

My mum used steradent for loads of stuff, net curtains, white china I'm fairly sure she stuck it down the loo too.

OP

I have a plastic kettle with a blue light that goes red when it boils.

Nooooooo! Tell me it’s not true! About the slug I mean. That’s vile. Off to check my kettle.

Ifailed · 15/06/2018 07:15

while you're checking your kettle for a slug, you may as well check the toaster for a mouse.

Sashkin · 15/06/2018 07:16

It will look bad unless you use filtered water. But we live in a hard water area so I use filtered water in the kettle anyway - sediment from the kettle in your tea is rough either way Envy

rogueone · 15/06/2018 07:17

I love mine as it also has lights too! Anyway descaler is all you need to keep it looking good.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 15/06/2018 07:30

Never using the toaster again.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 15/06/2018 08:28

We don't have a glass kettle but we do use a Britta jug (we have hard water here) with a cheaper tesco own brand filter. Our non-glass kettle never needs descaling and is clear on the inside so buy the kettle and always use filtered water and it should be fine.

PurpleChai · 15/06/2018 08:31

I’m glad I randomly deep cleaned our coffee machine last night before reading this thread Envy

MissCherryCakeyBun · 15/06/2018 08:34

I'm staring at my coffee mug in suspicion now.....why oh why did I read this thread

teaandtoast · 16/06/2018 01:45

As long as your coffee tastes all right...

MarthasGinYard · 16/06/2018 01:55

Yes de scale constantly

Don't do it

BedtimeTea · 16/06/2018 02:53

Our friends did, they had a clump of metal wool stuff in it that is supposed to help. It did look very nice when we stayed with them, dh wanted to get one. Our kettle refuses to die though. Friends glass kettle was accidently cracked and they did not replace with another glass one. Oh, they also use a Brita filter.

BedtimeTea · 16/06/2018 03:04

It looked like this. www.rkltools.co.uk/products/kettle-descaler-ball-pack-of-1

WittyJack · 16/06/2018 03:12

Yes because I saw one at a frend's and wanted it - but it was a disaster in London!

Next time I went for an LED colour changing one - it had that slightly funky not boring feel to it and looked much better. Lots of people commented on it!

WittyJack · 16/06/2018 03:15

I just googled to find you a link but most of them seem to be clear anyway, which would give you the same problem - mine wasn't, so you can find them without a big limescaley bit!

notsmartenough · 16/06/2018 03:32

I have a glass kettle that I bought after I found a slug in my coffee machine (I don't remember posting about it though!).
I like it, not had it long enough though to have to descale it.
I don't use the coffee machine any more and always cover my toaster just in case...

Bumblealong1 · 16/06/2018 03:49

We do and I don’t find descaling an issue.
My mother, who is now recovered from serious cancer, is convinced that you should use 100% glass kettles.. not ones with plastic bits. One of her cancer specialist doctors who is reknowed for her work agreed with her in one appointment I attended.
I haven’t looked into it enough but figured there was no harm in going plastic free..

Just throwing another factor in...

themightycrayon · 16/06/2018 03:57

I have a glass kettle and a stainless steel one (yes, I drink too much tea). I prefer the glass kettle, as even though we're in a hard water area, it descales pretty much immediately with lemon juice added to a bit of water brought to a boil. No wiping required. The stainless steel one is harder work. I still use the lemon juice and water, but I have to scrub it to get everything out.

hellokittymania · 16/06/2018 04:06

Hi, I'm just curious, but if you can't do you scale it, can you just put a white vinegar rents in it like you would with a normal cattle? I've never even heard of a glass kettle? And I never used to clean mine until I put my hand in it one day…. I'm visually impaired. It was disgusting.
