Do they end up manky if you live in a hard water area?

Yes.
I hate mine. I loved it when I bought it and it was all lovely and shiny. And it still is everytime I descale it, but literally the first time I use it after descaling it it already starts looking horrid.

MayFayner · 14/06/2018 21:35

We had one for a while, about a year or so I think.

It did get grotty looking and our water isn’t even particularly hard.

teaandtoast · 14/06/2018 21:37

I do and it can look manky on occasion, but at least you'd notice a slug in it!

Singlebutmarried · 14/06/2018 21:39

Yep, it went manky really quick.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 14/06/2018 21:40

I've had mine about 2 years and it's still clean. Water in my area isn't overly hard though. I love mine.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 14/06/2018 21:43

at least you'd notice a slug in it!

Um... is this something which actually happens? I really, REALLY hope you’re just joking. Slug tea Envy (not envy).

gwenneh · 14/06/2018 21:44

We do and it gets very manky unless you use filtered water, like from a Brita pitcher.

Runzilla · 14/06/2018 21:47

We LOVE ours. Lights up blue, so you don't even need a light on in the kitchen at night. We have soft water though, so its stayed shiny and clear. It's our second one.

Kr250710 · 14/06/2018 21:50

Yes... it is fine straight after de-scaling but one or two normal uses and looks shite again :(

MissMiserable · 14/06/2018 21:53

I suspected as much. Thank you

Pollaidh · 14/06/2018 22:03

Yes, even in not-so-hard an area too.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 14/06/2018 22:09

We're on our second. This one has a built-in filter, it stays much nicer than the previous one. Also we keep this weird lump of wire wool called a scale catcher in it which really helps reduce the build up

Peterrabbitscarrots · 14/06/2018 22:16

Pop a denture cleaning tablet in it from time to time. Ooh I should sell this tip to Take a Break mag Grin

Feelingsad33 · 14/06/2018 22:17

Yes my mums always had bits in the bottom - not in a hard water area either. She doesn’t like it but it was a gift so she has to use it Smile

Feelingsad33 · 14/06/2018 22:17

*has

QueenOfMyWorld · 14/06/2018 22:19

I use descaler in mine every month or so and it's fine

category12 · 14/06/2018 22:19

I'm just wondering how a slug would happen to wander into a kettle.

Jfw82 · 14/06/2018 22:23

Yes but oust every 6-8 weeks and stays lovely

RandomWordsStuckTogether · 14/06/2018 22:27

Yes. It’s shit. I fucking hate it. I have to descale it every five minutes otherwise it looks horrible (but still tastes fine). I realllllllly want a Dualit architect kettle but DH refuses to let me chuck the glass one as long as it’s still working fine. I keep hoping it’ll get accidentally smashed somehow.

Would not buy again.

lljkk · 14/06/2018 22:28

we live in hard water area, i don't think it got that manky, but I was always afraid we were going to bash it. Base died in the end is why it was replaced.

RandomWordsStuckTogether · 14/06/2018 22:29

The base!! I’m going to sabotage the base!

CloudCaptain · 14/06/2018 22:30

Ours has algae in the bottom. We're in software area so no limescale.

Bluntness100 · 14/06/2018 22:31

Mine was fine but I needed to descale it every month or so. I did have a plumber round who commented we lived in an exceptionally hard water area. I wouldn't say it ever looked manky.

I broke the lid off it and replaced it with a non glass one, as I was pissed off and went cheaper, but I liked it.

FaFoutis · 14/06/2018 22:32

I have one, it's manky but I don't care. The blue light is nice plus the non-slug bonus.

teaandtoast · 14/06/2018 22:33

Someone on here found a slug in their coffee machine, iirc, some time after it had crawled in.
