To think the Mn’s new rules on what you’re allowed to say

Should be flagged to the whole site - is everyone aware of the new 3 strikes and you’re banned policy depending on which words/language you use? Article in The Guardian for more info. Just didn’t see much on it, especially in AIBU.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech?

Magpiesarehuge · 14/06/2018 11:50

I’m not necessarily criticising Mn, just wondered if everyone was aware of the new rules before mn starts taking action.

Looks like Nick Baker (end of article quote) thinks the new rules will prevent debate too.
I think MN will have to qualify if these new 3 strike rules apply generally, or just to these threads. Bit unfair if this only applies to this topic.

LeighaJ · 14/06/2018 11:55

I can't help but wonder if this is due to the pressure put on MN's advertisers by transgender activists. Hmm

Beamur · 14/06/2018 11:57

I think the risk of exclusion after 3 strikes will stifle not just debate, but conversation.

Owllady · 14/06/2018 12:00

In that article, there is a quote from someone from some LGBQT platform but no spokesperson from any women rights groups. Speaks volumes

NotACleverName · 14/06/2018 12:01

I wish people could properly comprehend what freedom of speech actually means. It means that the government can't arrest you for what you say; not that private entities have to host what they may, rightly or wrongly, class as bigoted comments.

This xkcd comic, whilst mentioning the 1st Amendment, never stops being relevant

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 14/06/2018 12:04

How does this stifle free speech?! A private platform has made the rules of its own engagement very clear AND has indicated that you can break those rules twice and still be given another chance. This simply isn't a free speech issue.

If what you want is the freedom to use hateful terms and face no consequences for it, don't try and frame it as a free speech issue.

SemperIdem · 14/06/2018 12:10

Well at least it is also being acknowledged that cis and Terf are offensive.

MissMoneyPlant · 14/06/2018 12:18

Well at least it is also being acknowledged that cis and Terf are offensive.

I'd rather people could post terms like cis and TERF if it means the other side of the debate are allowed to use terms like TIM (trans identifying male) and flag up the way autogynaephilia is, worryingly, being lumped in with people who have sex dysphoria.

Neolara · 14/06/2018 12:21

I think it should be possible to debate these issues without being insulting. In fact, I think that people are much more likely to be convinced by arguments when the person putting the argument forward doesn't sound overly aggressive. I've read a lot of the feminist threads and agree with lots of what is being said. However, some posters sometimes come across as very intolerant because of the language they use. I think this only serves to undermine the very important points they are making.

Metoodear · 14/06/2018 12:31

So we’re no longer to say what is factually correct anymore

Does it mention three strikes, cannot find it on the page, anyone have a link?

AmazingPostVoices · 14/06/2018 13:41

A “minority” of MN users feel strongly about women’s rights?

Hmm
ReginaldMolehusband · 14/06/2018 13:41

Here's the new guidance www.mumsnet.com/info/trans-rights-moderation-policy , couple of frothing threads in site stuff about this capitulation.

TrashPanda · 14/06/2018 13:43

www.mumsnet.com/info/trans-rights-moderation-policy Link here to the new moderation guidelines. Two long threads in Site Stuff and a couple of related ones in Feminism Chat.

Sorry xposted with Reg Blush

welshmist · 14/06/2018 13:54

ah so it applies to a particular area rather than the whole. Tell me do you get an e-mail if your post is deleted?

MinaPaws · 14/06/2018 14:14

I think it's a great shame that Nick Baker thinks MN has "for a long time been a horrible place for anyone who advocates for LGBTQ+ rights." That's just not true. The MN I've known and used for about a decade has always been an exceedingly supportive space regarding LGBTQ rights. What it doesn't and won't defend, and rightly so are two aspects of trans rights which are being embraced without sufficient discussion:

  1. Self-identifying 'women' who are males by birth, have penises and other physical traits such as strength and speed commensurate with the male body, barging into women's spaces and monopolising them or worse, abusing women inside them.
  2. The speed with which teens who identify as trans are given access to strong hormones and surgery without thorough and proper consultation and counselling. Given how volatile hormones and emotions are in teen years, there are justifiable discussions and opinions on whether less invasive transitions should be encouraged first. These are neither hatred nor bigotry, they are serious, necessary and humane concerns. There may be a few tempers rising during these debates but the threads I've read and sometimes contributed to have not fostered hate. They've raised concern. Not the same thing at all.
TrashPanda · 14/06/2018 14:20

@welshmist I've only lurked and I can't quite work out if it's just the feminism section or posts about trans or gender issues anywhere on the site, I might have missed something though. Someone from HQ said you would be informed of a deletion and they would have a conversation before suspension.
