Why do people pretend, yes pretend, to hate the Daily Mail?

MummyMuppet2x2 · 14/06/2018 07:07

Just that really. I've seen tons threads where MNetters quote from it, or paraphrase a story from it, sometimes they're even kind enough to provide clickable links, whilst calling it the 'Daily Fail' Hmm

If they hate it so much why are they reading it and quoting from it? There's loads of other papers to choose from Smile

Instead of pretending to scoff and look down on it why can't they just admit they like it? Lurve it even Grin

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 14/06/2018 08:52

I don't loathe it. I read it and a lot of the other newspapers. The sneering on here is tedious especially given how many threads start with a Mail link and not all of them to criticise the link.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 14/06/2018 08:52

I love the way the lefties are getting het up about the DM but are really offended when the tables are turned. Typical and not unexpected.

Orangecake123 · 14/06/2018 08:59

It's my secret guilty pleasure.

It’s unreadable as they ipdateninthrough the day, you end up with the same info 4 times as it’s cobbled together. Can’t read it.

critiqueofeveryday · 14/06/2018 09:01

"I love the way the lefties are getting het up about the DM but are really offended when the tables are turned"

Are turned in what way? Can you point to a left wing media source that promulgates sexism, racism, homophobia in the same way? I doubt it. The only area where there is overlap is that of class prejudice, which has come screaming out of some left-wing media after the Brexit referendum. I agree that this is unacceptable, whether it's found in the Guardian or the DM.

PaintedHorizons · 14/06/2018 09:06

It's just virtue signalling. The biggest crimes amongst a lot of people on here are perceived racism, sexism, right-wing-ism, benefits bashing, and stupidity. The DM is many, (even all), of those things,. So it's a huge badge of pride to be saying that you hate it. It is a key credential - along with "reporting" someone that you know for a racist/sexual slur and telling everyone on MN about it so that they can all tell you how wonderful you are.

Frequency · 14/06/2018 09:08

I read it from time to time, when I'm bored but I view it as a source of fictional entertainment rather than news.

Luisa27 · 14/06/2018 09:10

I read lots of things I fundamentally disagree with - it’s good to read myriad opinions and to see things through different lenses.
Otherwise we’d all live in echo chambers where we only read the same opinion as our own.

mostdays · 14/06/2018 09:19

People are regularly told to get out of their bubble and access sources of information that come at issues from a different angle to the one they agree with. So it's a good idea for a Guardian reader to check out the DM/ Sun/ Times etc every so often. Benefits to someone pro trans giving gender critical forums the time of day once in a while. Benefits to antitheists paying attention to religious groups from time to time.

I don't read the DM regularly and I think it's an awful publication but once in a while I do have a look at it, to see what they're saying these days. I want to understand what people with different opinions from me think and why they think it. It's like the philosophy and religion threads on here- I am comfortably and wholly atheist but I sometimes like to read the thoughts of those who aren't. Living in a bubble.is far more comfortable but does nothing to improve my understanding of those outside it!

commonarewe · 14/06/2018 09:19

Loudly proclaiming your undying hatred of the "Daily Fail" to all and sundry is part of the daily life ritual of all virtue-signalling lefties.

Gotta keep that halo polished! Grin

Inkanta · 14/06/2018 09:23

Ha haa Smile - well said Mummy.

Halebeke425 · 14/06/2018 10:41

Just to clarify, it's not about wanting to be in an echo chamber and only read things/speak to people I agree with. Far from it! I can have interesting discussions and debates, learn things and be informed without funding odious and divisive tosh dressed up as 'news' which is frankly just insulting to my intelligence. So I stay away from it.

critiqueofeveryday · 14/06/2018 10:45

"Just to clarify, it's not about wanting to be in an echo chamber and only read things/speak to people I agree with"

This.

Part of my research is on facism, both historically and in the present (the alt-right and extremists). I spend a lot of my life trying to read and understand work by people with whom I disagree. I hate the Mail precisely because I am exposed to this material, not because I want to run away from it.

critiqueofeveryday · 14/06/2018 10:45

*fascism. Bloody autocorrect!

wowfudge · 14/06/2018 10:48

I read a cross-section of newspapers online. I hate the editorial line of the DM but I do like to keep up with what shit they are peddling in order to be informed.

Melliegrantfirstlady · 14/06/2018 10:50

I read it every day and like it. I’m not pretending at all

mummmy2017 · 14/06/2018 10:56

If you want a laugh read the express... everything gets blown up on that one.
Biggest ever.
Worse in decades.

derxa · 14/06/2018 11:20

It's just virtue signalling. Yup I read the DM website every day but I also read the Guardian in equal measure. Both ridiculously biased. I'm glad to live in a country where the press can publish different viewpoints.

Buggered · 14/06/2018 11:22

It’s unreadable as they ipdateninthrough the day, you end up with the same info 4 times as it’s cobbled together. Can’t read it.

Can you try that again? Your post is unreadable! Grin

Weezol · 14/06/2018 11:30

Like Luisa27 and others, I read four or five different news sites. I don't like some views on The Mail (immigration, sidebar) and The Times, but they are on it about Man Friday for example. however but then I don't like aspects of the Guardian either (Owen Jones and Bromentum). Reading across a spectrum is important to me in order to reach an informed, balanced conclusion.

I view it as a twist on the 'three sides' thing i.e. There are three sides to every story. His side, her side and somewhere in the middle is the truth.

SO true haha - I used to sit next to a Labour voter at work, who thought himself the pinnacle of socialism and liberalism. Daily jokes about the daily mail being awful. But every lunchtime - guess who was on the DM for an hour grin hahaha

Public Sector here and believe me we have many of those Grin

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 14/06/2018 12:49

@NewYearNewMe18 Has it.

And the DM is not "full of hate" this is so boring and tired.

It regularly calls out politicians on both the left and right for hypocrisy as well as celebs etc.

Having plurality of press is such an important democratic freedom - if you don't like it don't buy it but campaigns to try and shut it down are infuriating.
