Why do people pretend, yes pretend, to hate the Daily Mail?

MummyMuppet2x2 · 14/06/2018 07:07

Just that really. I've seen tons threads where MNetters quote from it, or paraphrase a story from it, sometimes they're even kind enough to provide clickable links, whilst calling it the 'Daily Fail' Hmm

If they hate it so much why are they reading it and quoting from it? There's loads of other papers to choose from Smile

Instead of pretending to scoff and look down on it why can't they just admit they like it? Lurve it even Grin

It will be interesting to see what effect Paul Dacre leaving will have on it.

givemesteel · 14/06/2018 07:36

I don't read the news in the daily mail, I pay for another app for that, but it does have a good app so if there's been a big event (eg the Oscar's or the royal wedding etc) there's loads of pictures to flick through. Not very high brow but I enjoy doing that sometimes.

It also has a good Health section, I have a particular health problem and have found out about treatments in it which haven't been reported in other newspapers. Not saying there isn't drivel on there too but there has been stuff that's useful.

It's also free which alot of newspapers aren't so it's accessible to the masses.

So I'm not there to read about immigrants, people on benefits or those who've had a boob job on the NHS. But then I don't call it the daily fail etc either.

NewYearNewMe18 · 14/06/2018 07:38

if you always read news from a single viewpoint you can very easily become as narrow minded as the Daily Mail editors.

^^ I agree with you - I read across a whole spectrum of media - the DM is easy to scroll through until you get to some of it's better cultural articles (yes it does have them) - but I find the Guardian just as irritating with its left wing bias. Even the Inde isn't middle of the road any more.

TimeToDash · 14/06/2018 07:40

I think lots of the inflammatory articles are so ridiculous they get repeated and discussed on Twitter, other Social Media and so on, even in some of the proper newspapers! My Mum reads it and just doesn't see the racism and bigotry Sad

LifeBeginsAtGin · 14/06/2018 07:44

Because the only paper they believe in is the Guardian to give them the leftwing true news Hmm

critiqueofeveryday · 14/06/2018 07:47

The Daily Mail is the most morally indefensible media outlet in the country right now, and has been for some time. It spreads hate, lies, misinformation and appears to be staffed by 17 year olds with the ethics and politics of Goebbels.

fawkesAgain2 · 14/06/2018 07:50

I assume it's by the Guardian-reading, sandle-eating, lentil-weaving morons who think they're incredibly open minded but call anyone who doesn't agree with them a fascist.

Halebeke425 · 14/06/2018 07:51

Well I for one don't read the daily mail, link to it or go on it's webpage at all, for any reason. Or the Sun for that matter. I'm not a hypocrite, I'm not interested in what they're selling so I stay away from it. Plenty of other places to read the news so no big deal.

TuTru · 14/06/2018 07:52

I actually do hate The Mail

Deathraystare · 14/06/2018 07:52

It is not my cup of tea politically or any other way actually. However, where i live , someone gets spares most days from the newsagent. They sometimes get 'i' as well (more my cuppa) , Metro and Standard as well (ok those two are free).

Now I do not particularly like Corbyn but I think it will physically and mentally scar the Mail bods not to mention him on a daily basis. They also must, absolutely must, make snide remarks about remainers, otherwise I think they might explode.

I also roll my eyes about their views on women. They cleverly get women hating women to 'write' the working women v Sahm pieces, "I am prettier than my friends/daughter/dog", "I like being treated like shit", "I want my daughter to end up an entitled princess with no thoughts of being educated etc etc".

At the end of the day, I cut out the recipe and that is it.

TuTru · 14/06/2018 07:54

And all the other tabloid scum

50shadesofgreyismylaundry · 14/06/2018 07:54

I don't pretend to hate it, I hate it because of the racism, misogyny, xenophobia and demonisation of the vulnerable. Dacre is a cunt and I'm glad he's going.

User12879923378 · 14/06/2018 07:54

Some of us try to read news from sources whose values we don't share, OP. Keeps us intellectually nimble.

ShweShwe · 14/06/2018 07:59

100% this.

I despise the Mail. I loathe what it stands for and what it does. In my opinion the kind of people who read and defend it are precisely what is wrong with this country at the moment - and more so since bloody Brexit. Sorry if you are one of those people and that offends you - but misogyny, jingoism, xenophobia and Little Britain-ism offend me.

WonderTweek · 14/06/2018 08:05

Nope, I actually do hate it and I quietly judge people who read it. Same with the Sun. They’re both utter filth and I’m genuinely surprised that they are allowed exist in this day and age.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/06/2018 08:06

I pretend to like halloumi, aubergine and my husband's hobby. I really do hate the DM. I preserve a special place in my own private hell for those who post in the comments section. (I follow dm reader on Twitter) if sometimes I start getting smug and believing the world isn't such a bad place and people are usually right-thinking and rational, a quick scan of that soon grounds me.(and I understand why people vote trump, support the edl and why women haven't achieved equality.

gamerwidow · 14/06/2018 08:11

No pretence from me I don’t buy it and I won’t click on links to it either. They are responsible for much of the hostile environment to immigrants and benefit claimants and they’ve created a toxic climate of fear and resentment.
I do ageee though you can’t claim to hate the Daily Mail and then proceed to post a link to it, that’s daft.

"I preserve a special place in my own private hell for those who post in the comments section."

There is something really, really wrong with a lot of those people. If you want a profound insight into human evil, the DM comments section provides it on a daily basis.

Remember when people thought the internet would be a democratic force for enlightenment and change? Seems like a very long time ago now.

Nikephorus · 14/06/2018 08:32

I like it because it's so bollocks, and because I like to get my little fix of gossip, and because their poor grammar and inability to report accurately amuses me, and because it's a wide range of 'news', and because it can vary in its political views, and because I don't have to remotely take it seriously. I don't pretend to hate it, nor do I actually hate it (there are very few things worthy of 'hate'), I just see it for what it is, a look into the wider world and all the different people. Why take it seriously?

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 14/06/2018 08:36

Because, as with 99% of things on MN, people say they're doing one thing to make themselves look better than they really are whilst actually doing the other.

First reply had it spot on - "Pretentious Dickwads"..... Grin

Andrewofgg · 14/06/2018 08:43

I don’t pretend. I loathe it. I only see what is quoted here and elsewhere on line and that is enough. I am told it has a good gardening column - other than that it has only one use and you can get a better product in several pastel shades on a cardboard roll at the supermarket.

Never done this myself but don't see why you assume there's any pretence about it when people do?

I've read Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto but it doesn't mean I agreed with the contents.

OkMaybeNot · 14/06/2018 08:49

I love it, it's fucking ridiculous.
