Just been to the supermarket. Check out lady sneezed in to her hand and then scanned my shopping (not allergies, she clearly has a cold). Also wiped her nose on back of her hand and continues to touch the food.

Not sure what to do with the shopping. Will have to wipe it down with a disinfectant wipe. Seriously nasty. A toddler wouldn't get away with this .

Yuck

Ffs

Honestly want to just throw it away :-(

shiklah · 13/06/2018 19:46

This happened to me. I asked him not to touch my food, he apologised and used hand sanitiser.

DaisysStew · 13/06/2018 19:48

They’re going to refund your entire shop because of a sneeze? Without even looking into it first?

Which supermarket is it? I’m bloody skint and would happily let someone sneeze on my weekly shop if it meant getting it for free. Grin

Iceweasel · 13/06/2018 19:50

You could have been infected just by being near someone sneezing. It would only have bothered me for a minute. I assume you would wash fruit and vegetables anyway?

WonderTweek · 13/06/2018 19:51

Years ago my husband and I were in the local supermarket and the checkout person was an older lady and she started randomly bleeding from her arm. She got blood on the conveyor belt and potentially on some of our shopping too. She noticed it but didn’t say anything and just half assedly wiped it with blue roll and carried on. We asked if she was ok and she was so not bothered that we just paid and left. ShockWe did wipe everything when we got home though. Ew.

TheActualRealCinderella · 13/06/2018 19:51

Donate the food to a shelter or refuge ffs.

BrutusMcDogface · 13/06/2018 19:53

Oh dear god. Some of you sound so ridiculous that you must be joking! Op and melonscoffer. You're joking, aren't you?

Iceweasel · 13/06/2018 19:53

Take the non perishables to your nearest food bank drop off point.Throwing them out would be terribly wasteful.

Anasnake · 13/06/2018 19:55

Chucking food away ???? Ffs, give it to a food bank at least, ridiculous

NotUmbongoUnchained · 13/06/2018 19:55

I think I must be the only person in the world who would literally not give a shit about this. And I come from a country where people with colds wear face masks.

Anasnake · 13/06/2018 19:56

I would not give a shit either

Racecardriver · 13/06/2018 19:56

Why didn't you just leave? The level of 'Nope' there justifies just ditching your groceries and walking out without a word.

amyddss · 13/06/2018 19:57

You can easily give the food to people who need it. Sometimes I read these things and feel like I'm from fucking Jupiter.

showerfire · 13/06/2018 19:58

I phoned the store and they are going to refund me!

Without investigating? Just because you called?

What about the checkout lady? What is happening to her?

And please don't throw the food away. That's absolutely ridiculous, wasteful and bloody idiotic

MissusGeneHunt · 13/06/2018 19:58

Really?? ALL men don't wash their hands?!! My DP must be a girl then.... (runs off to double check with a v v confused look on my face). FFS.

ElMarineroBaila · 13/06/2018 19:58

So wasteful and precious. I suggest you wear a hazmat suit to go out if you're so scared of germs

britchick77 · 13/06/2018 19:59

A lot of disgusting things happen to our food all the way along the chain - if we knew half of it we wouldn't eat it!

It sounds like the yuck factor is responsible for a lot of your reaction rather than worrying about getting ill? (you can't catch a cold by eating the virus, only by the virus somehow getting into your nose).

Fair enough to call the store, as it's gross, but I don't think you'll get ill.

Crispyturtle · 13/06/2018 19:59

I am gobsmacked at both the OP & most of the comments, do people really get this wound up about a sneeze?! How do you exist in the world? Jeez there’s a lot of people who need to unclench.

Hideandgo · 13/06/2018 20:00

What Brutus said.

I hope nobody reading this gets infected with this level of hysteria.

I would have been a bit ‘oh for God’s sake’ about it but would have also been aware that the guy stacking the shelf may have had piss on his hands. But I prefer to just accept that it’s normal for the world to be germy.

RideOn · 13/06/2018 20:01

How can you tell it was a viral sneeze and not an allergic sneeze?
Genuine question.

GabsAlot · 13/06/2018 20:03

please dont throw away the food at least donate it

and melonscoffer grow up

SlothMama · 13/06/2018 20:05

That's vile, when I worked in food retail and had a cold I always kept tissues and hand santizer handy. I wouldn't dream of wiping my snot on my hand then onto someones food.

Lweji · 13/06/2018 20:05

Sometimes I read these things and feel like I'm from fucking Jupiter.

This.

You could, you know, wash your hands and food after and before handling it.

I assume you never go on public transport, OP. Or touch any surfaces outside your sanitised home.

Lweji · 13/06/2018 20:07

Yes I know male staff stacked the shelves but I can't control the shelf stackers. I can control my end result and choose female staff to scan the food.

You're controlling nothing. You're just kidding yourself.

MyAuntyBadger · 13/06/2018 20:08

I was in Morrisons years ago looking at their uncovered bread rolls, next to another customer. He did a massive sneeze all over them. I've never bought anything uncovered/unwrapped since.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/06/2018 20:10

melonscoffer just told my ds, who has worked in supermarkets for ten years, stacking, on tills, managing, what you said about male staff. His reply-fucking rude.(and the women can be as grim as you say men are)
I was being served at our local shop and the server had managed to cut her hand on the till. Blood smeared everywhere. I stopped the belt and said it needed cleaning. She half heartedly wiped it with blue roll. (It was chockablock, and I couldn't move to another till.) I suggested antibacterial spray and a plaster. She shrugged and said it was ok and I was being fussy. I called supervisor over and she was sent to first aid immediately(and hopefully for a bollocking) manager opened another till and called for deep clean.
