So what jobs or businesses make good money

Just want to do some really cool experiences, esp traveling more than one holiday in the sun a year

I know someone who is a journalist who specialises in travel. She is always on holiday for "work" purposes. I'm so envious looking at her Facebook feed. In the last couple of months she's been to Peru, Venice and Austria. Maybe start a travel blog and offer to review places for free holidays...

lanbro · 12/06/2018 18:56

I have 2 businesses. After A couple of years of the first we were able to only work as and when we chose and had loads of holidays, and paid off a chunk of the mortgage. In the first year of the second business and working my arse off but hopefully in another year or 2 we'll be again just pottering and enjoying the fruits of our labour

BoomBoomsCousin · 12/06/2018 19:05

We live in a capitalist economy and, for the most part, what makes you money is capital. To get capital to make significant amounts of money most people need to find a job that pays well and then not spend a good chunk of what they earn, investing it instead. Most small businesses that people set up fail. It isn't really, by itself, "the way forward" in regard to earnings.

The way to get rich is to spend significantly less than you earn and invest the difference. Over time it builds up. Sex work may seem appealing because it seems like good money without the need for qualification or experience. Of course, there are exceptions but very few sex workers end up rich. The money isn't really that great for most sex work, a lot of it is unsafe, there are a number of expenses involved and many women who do it end up abusing alcohol or other drugs.

But there are jobs you can do or businesses you can start that may give you some of what you want from being rich and idle (and I certainly see why rich and idle appeals!). It sounds like a lot of what you're interested in is travel, so kateandme's list might be worth looking at.

@Leopoldstotch this is a salary benchmarking survey for my industry. Senior role rates are upwards of, so for some roles the day rate you can charge will be higher

cogsagency.com/2017/03/2017-digital-salary-benchmark-london/

I earn more and work less freelancing than if I was in an equivalent perm role

TheVampiresLife · 12/06/2018 21:38

@bananafish did you have a degree in your area first?

bananafish81 · 13/06/2018 06:17

Nope. Arts degree.

bananafish81 · 13/06/2018 09:24

I started on £16k pa. when I was 22 - I can only make that in a month because of
A) 14 years of graft and experience in my field
B) focusing in an area where there's now a glut of demand and dearth of supply for senior folk with the right skillset and experience

Not a chance is what I do in any way more valuable than a nurse or carer - I would never claim that I got where I am just by working hard. It's supply and demand - it's not recognition that my contribution is more worthy than someone on NMW. Because it isn't. They work harder than I do and the world wouldn't stop turning if I didn't do my job - unlike nurses and care workers. My value to my industry isn't the same as my actual value to society.

Bowlofbabelfish · 13/06/2018 09:27

What’s your background and qualifications?

Singlenotsingle · 13/06/2018 09:32

High class sex worker

bananafish81 · 13/06/2018 09:34

Oxford history degree. No professional qualifications. Just experience and making career moves to do more of the kind of work I wanted to be doing.

Kittenfluff · 13/06/2018 09:37

Starting your own business - while there has to be a demand for your products / services, you do need to have some interest in what you’re selling or you will get bored and be unlikely to stick with it . When you are getting a healthy cash flow, save and start investing. It’s what I plan to do.

nickinic · 13/06/2018 09:48

@HolyShmoly

If i had a career change and became a stripper, I reckon I'd only get paid if I stopped dancing and put my clothes back on! ConfusedGrin

TheVampiresLife · 13/06/2018 10:02

Thanks bananafish that's interesting and helpful.

RunMummyRun68 · 13/06/2018 10:06

Jesus!!! Who buys the knickers..... prob some of the DH/DP of ours!

And we wash them? There's often a thread on here ' I've found some pants that definitely aren't mine'..... now we know!Grin

Nicknacky · 13/06/2018 10:08

How much does a pair of knickers sell for?

Hideandgo · 13/06/2018 10:38

Bananafish, we work in the same industry and I earn very well according to mumsnet, while working full time from home, freelance, with a Nanny. Thanks for that link. It shows me that some of my recent work is actually very very bankable. And what I clshould be charging and where I should be upskilling.

bananafish81 · 13/06/2018 13:50

@Hideandgo if the client / agency isn't gasping and immediately trying to negotiate your day rate down, you're going in too low!

Hideandgo · 13/06/2018 14:14

Banana, I think be been underestimating how much I know too! Might try to self study a bit more to get my confidence up and as security.

Hannabee123 · 13/06/2018 14:45

Can selling your pants pay the rent? Seriously? If so I'm grabbing my keys and going down the shop. Or do granny pants sell better Grin

HolyShmoly · 13/06/2018 17:14

Absolutely not the point but I love the little snippet of career mentoring that just went on between Banana and Hide.

LardLizard · 13/06/2018 19:01

I also love banana s posts too not often you actually hear people say this

OP posts:
Leopoldstotch · 13/06/2018 19:53

Thanks for the helpful information banana
I'm also Shock at the fact people pay for used underwear. You learn something new everyday

bananafish81 · 13/06/2018 19:58

Delighted if any of my ramblings are of any use! I'm really passionate about mentoring, and am involved in quite a few networks for women in digital, as I think it's so so important to nurture female talent. Women will very often undervalue the work we do - from both a self confidence and a commercial POV. Massive generalisation but it's too often the case that blokes will have an over inflated sense of their own skills and capabilities, and have the confidence to be more demanding when it comes to career progression and remuneration. I know I have definitely been victim of imposter syndrome, and have definitely under-charged for my work, out of a sense of nervousness about whether they would laugh me out of the room, borne out of a lack of self belief

Especially in a male dominated industry like tech and digital, I think mentoring and networking for female talent is so important. I've found it invaluable!

On a purely commercial front - there are quite a few salary benchmarking surveys published for the digital industry @Hideandgo - it sounds like you have very valuable skills and experience, and should be charging a day rate commensurate with this. Remember, blokes with less talent and know-how will happily charge more - so don't undersell yourself! Clients expect to negotiate on rates, so go in high and take it from there

SpoilsburyToastGirl · 13/06/2018 20:06

I make good money working for myself. I own a popular beauty clinic and have staff working for me too and I offer a specialist treatment that pays well.

It takes up more time than expected, having staff can be a ballache and the taxman takes his share but we have enough money to go on a few holidays every year, not think too much about what we spend and enjoy ourselves so I can't grumble.

Hideandgo · 13/06/2018 20:12

Bananafish, would love to chat in real life. I’m not shy of negotiating but I’ve had an excellent client for a number of years and have earned very (very) well from them while moving countries and having 4 babies back to back and keeping my job without more than a few weeks off each time. The work is extremely easy for me after what I did in my earlier career so zero stress and complete freedom working from home. I have also gained huge experience working for them across various digi projects but hadn’t realised how much until I read through the recruitment site you sent. I’d be well able to interview for lots of those roles they have available I realise.

So suddenly I see how valuable my skills are, after really only sliding sideways into this area because the conditions suited my growing family. Thanks for that!
