To fucking despair that young men think like this? *Trigger warning*

I know it's the Dailyfail, but what the actual fuck?! Are we still living in a civilised society?! The comments are depressing as hell, with some even excusing it as 'just banter hahaha'

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5833725/Warwick-University-expels-three-students-sick-Facebook-group-chat.html

What is disturbing to me is that they are supposed to be somewhat educated people Sad

OP posts:
OohMavis · 12/06/2018 12:58

I don't think they do think like this, really.

Maybe that's me being optimistic, but if these 'lads' were ever confronted with a real life vagina they'd probably shit themselves.

It's good they were outed as being this fucking stupid. Bet their parents are proud Hmm

onepoundsfifity · 12/06/2018 13:02

YANBU. It is not harmless banter. It normalises sexual assault, degrading attitudes to woman and racism.
It makes sexual assault and racism more likely to occur.

I am glad someone reported them and the University got rid of them. That heartens me a little.

liz70 · 12/06/2018 13:05

Three little gobshites who were expelled from uni for scummy behaviour do not represent all young men.

FizzyGreenWater · 12/06/2018 13:05

Yep, I think that they think like this.

Just look at the comments.

They think like this because a part of them thinks it's ok to think like this. And there are plenty of shitbags all around us that would nod and condone it.

And you see the results of that everywhere. Toxic masulinity, everyday sexism, all coming from the same basic place as this: women are lesser. They're not really human. We're the people. They're the things.

NAMALT?

Actually I'm finding more QALOMIF

quite a lot of men in fact.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 12/06/2018 13:06

yes, because that totally happens in (their) real life
Sometimes it's fun to just go wild and rape 100 girls. Hmm

They are just idiots, they always existed and always will. Bragging nonsense to make themselves look cool in front of their mates. I wouldn't despair, most people are not like that. They sound like the terribly awkward, virgin, bullied-billy-no-mates and you would nearly feel sorry for them.

The sad thing about social media is that this can come and hunt them in a few years, when they have grown up. At least years ago you could forget your stupid years.

maxthemartian · 12/06/2018 13:07

Similar sort of "banter" by those rugby players that got away with gang rape, wasn't there?

OohMavis · 12/06/2018 13:11

The worst thing is, that these boys would have been educated in internet safety from a very young age, unlike the generation before them. They KNOW how nothing they type or post on the internet is truly private. And yet...

They'll only have themselves to blame when this shit follows them around, even when they're grown and most likely decent, kind men.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 12/06/2018 13:14

you say that, but despite the many MANY reminders on this forum, there's always a poster moaning that some story has been picked up by a newspaper. People don't learn!

I am not defending the idiots, btw, stupidity is not an excuse, but I don't think it's such a big deal: SOME young men are stupid, these sound like pathetic insecure idiots who have never even holdd hand with a girl, but they are not the majority.
They have been expelled, so it's not like their behaviour was judged acceptable for anyone either.

gillybeanz · 12/06/2018 13:20

I blame the parents tbh, I hope they are ashamed raising such awful people.
I hope this follows them throughout their lives, what a waste of oxygen.

brizzledrizzle · 12/06/2018 13:21

^ This. I'm glad they've been expelled from the university; they are old enough to know better - at least, you'd hope so.

UpstartCrow · 12/06/2018 13:25

Its not rare at all. Its very easy for cliques to form, responsible employers take steps to stop them forming inside the workplace.
Private groups are an insight into how people behave when they think there aren't any constraining rules.

It's not new or rare.
''A private Facebook group of former and serving Defence Force members has provided a disturbing insight into the sexist and racist culture that exists inside the ranks.''

SameTerfDifferentUserName · 12/06/2018 13:26

I honestly think the majority DON’T think like that. However it’s a much larger minority than anybody would like to think that do Sad

Looking on the bright side Warwick did expell and the general public on the comments section are largely appalled.

onepoundsfifty · 12/06/2018 13:30

To people minimising this behaviour by saying, 'they just wanted to fit in with their mates. It is not so bad'
You do realise that there are men who have sexually assaulted and raped girls to 'fit in with their mates?' That is exactly what a young man said to a girl from his school who was abducted and assaulted in a 'punishment' rape. She begged him to let her go. He said' I am with my boys now' and then sexually assaulted her.
We need to say that women and girls matter. Their humanity matters more then 'fitting with with your mates'. The person (likely male?) who reported the young men in the OP knew that. The young man who released the young girl above when he came back and saw what his mates were doing knew that (even though he had to go into police protection).
Do you think young men who commit assaults like these just go straight to the assaults? Don't you think they start out in conversations like those above, which go unchallenged, so that the behaviour they are describing starts to appear normal?
We should never minimise these conversations. They have real world implications for real women and girls.

TammySwansonTwo · 12/06/2018 13:32

It’s the kind of disgusting shit you see on sites like 4chan - trying to out shock each other. Do I think they really believe it? Most likely not. Do I still think it’s a problem? Absofuckinglutely.

I couldn't read it all as their messages made my skin crawl. But unfortunately from my experience this is more common than I ever expected. When I was teen my boyfriend and his friends spoke like this, when I found out I ditched him obviously. And it's true that most of them would shit themselves if they saw an actual vagina.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 12/06/2018 13:37

To people minimising this behaviour by saying, 'they just wanted to fit in with their mates. It is not so bad'

you don't understand the point, no one is accepting their behaviour, but pointing out that they are not the majority, they are only a couple of idiots among thousands of decent people. Also pointing out that there is a HUGE difference between posting that sort of nonsense and actually raping 100s of girls

deydododatdodontdeydo · 12/06/2018 13:39

"Look at the comments".

All the top rated comments are ones condemning this.
The lowest rated are the "harmless banter" ones.
Surprising from Mail readers, but the comments don't seem too bad.

user1486062886 · 12/06/2018 13:41

Why do people still read the mail paper or online when you know what you are going to get, it’s almosr like you want to be outraged

MeyYael · 12/06/2018 13:43

Some like this stuff. (Sexually)

Some think it's fun being "edgy" or whatever.

Idk... I feel like despairing is giving them what they want.

That doesn't mean one should ignore or condone it.

But knowing that these texts would lead to despair / fear etc is probably an element of what attracts certain people to this.

I sometimes wish they had at least the guts to say this stuff publically. So women would know who to stay clear off...

siwel123 · 12/06/2018 13:43

Young men don't think this.
Disgusting and vile sxumbags make and think these jokes. Not your average young man.

Slapbetcommissioner · 12/06/2018 13:44

For those saying they're a minority, read the comments and you'll see it's not a minority who think this way. Look through the news, social media etc and you'll see it's actually quite a lot of men (I'm beginning to feel like it's all of them).

Mousefunky · 12/06/2018 13:46

They’re most likely virgin losers. Strikes me as a racist, misogynistic and humourless version of The Inbetweeners.

siwel123 · 12/06/2018 13:46

Well it's not all of them Hmm.
Again there's 30 odd million men on this country. I don't think many of them think it's acceptable to say that at all.

pigmcpigface · 12/06/2018 13:47

I've worked in a university for 20 years. I do think things have changed a lot in that time. Some of this change is worrying. On several campuses, we now have a visible and increasingly confident lot of young people who have far-right allegiances. We also have more open racism/sexism than there used to be.

These students aren't the majority, but the problem is growing, not decreasing.
