Just put some bloody clothes on if you're cold....

Just that.

Air conditioning wars.

Office I work in is run by a south american, has two Italians, and a lot of British hot house flowers.

The temperature regularly gets up to 27/28 in here (its an all glass building) but within five minutes of turning the air con on, all we get is "its cold".

Me and one other person are working in light cotton trousers and light vests - nothing else. We literally cannot take any more clothes off and be decent. We have mini personal desk fans which help a little.

The problem doesn't end in winter though. Then they want to crank the heating up to 28 and we'd be quite happy with the window open -but we are willing to compromise at 22. But thats not warm enough apparently.

So we have to suffer feeling ill and tired just because they don't want to wear a cardigan in summer.

In the end the company issued a "rule" about the temperature setting haha

It's a disciplinary offence to change the temperature in our place!! Grin

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 12/06/2018 11:17

you shouldn't have to wear winter clothes in the office in the summer. The difference in temperature when you step outside and are home are so unhealthy, it's much better to get used to the warmth instead of going forever from cold to hot.

It's summer, it's hotter, even the kids have a winter and summer uniform. It's not like the UK ever has really hot days anyway!

CheeseyToast · 12/06/2018 11:17

Love it! Fired for adjusting the air con...

megletthesecond · 12/06/2018 11:18

Yabu.
Extra layers don't make any difference in a cold office if you're sitting still. And I count sitting still as only getting up every 15 mins or so, not enough exercise to keep the blood pumping. The air is still cold and it's hard to type with stiff hands.

same here! Grin Grin Grin
it might have been because I made a huge fuss about it haha

megletthesecond · 12/06/2018 11:19

Tbh we shouldn't really have air con in the UK. It's not really hot until it hits 30.

HeffalumpsnWoozles · 12/06/2018 11:22

YANBU! It is regularly 32c in our office as we work above a factory and its hell on earth. Unfortunately there is no maximum temp you can work in just a minimum.

MissCharleyP · 12/06/2018 11:24

Exactly meglet! No amount of extra clothing will make you feel warm if the air around you is cold. It’s ridiculous how cold some people think is an ‘acceptable’ temperature. As pp have said, when you’re sat still typing, it’s freezing! I used to arrange visits in the summer months so I could at least be warm!

Drchinnery · 12/06/2018 11:24

I worked in an office and it was always boiling, we used to open the window and had a temp complain to HR she was freezing as we opened a window and some sort of working regs meant the office must be 28oC. So they put the heating on full, I was pregnant at the time and used to go home soaked in sweat! Girls used to end up in vests. Because of one person. YANBU

RedPony1 · 12/06/2018 11:27

Personally I would always choose to be hot than cold

Well plenty of people are the opposite. Being hot makes me very very agitated and angry, i can't function.

The temperature should be pretty much the same as it is outside, so 20 degrees is way too cold if it's 25-26 in the street.

Sod that! I come inside to get AWAY from that kind of heat!!
20 degrees is warm.

20 c is too cold? No way!
depends on the outdoor temperature, but at 20 I wear a jumper and a scarf in the office, and a jacket outside
Are you being serious? A scarf?! I don't even wear a scarf at zero temps...
It's 20 degree's here today, driving to work people were in shorts and flip flops, looking out my window, everyone seems to be in shorts and vests.

It's not really hot until it hits 30
You missed the 'in your opinion' part. i struggle to function in my activities if it's over about 24. 16 is more than warm enough for me.

ItsalmostSummer · 12/06/2018 11:28

Yabu. I have worked in an office with one person dictating the temperature and she blew it cold all day in summer. (The cool air blew on some people and straight over her head). People in our office were sat in jumpers, coats, hat and sometimes gloves as it was so bloody cold. Honestly people who dictate this really annoy me. Sorry you are outvoted OP.

KarmaStar · 12/06/2018 11:35

There is no maximum heat temperature you can insist on,only minimum

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 12/06/2018 11:36

I had bad experience with someone insisting on working in a fridge, but with the air con blasting cold air. I made formal complaints and took a couple of weeks off sick every month with chest infection due to the cold air, on full pay, and repeated my formal complaints.

It didn't take that long to get back to a decent temperature Grin

DarlingNikita · 12/06/2018 11:36

What are your colleagues wearing? If they're already layered up then it's harder to argue to turn the heating down, but if they're sitting about with bare arms etc then YANBU and they should put on another layer.

I can't abide overly warm rooms. Makes me feel like an invalid.

maxthemartian · 12/06/2018 11:39

I hate it when people say oh you can just put on more layers if you're cold.
That may warm you up. It doesn't help me. If I'm sitting still and the air temperature is low (and I suffer at anything below around 20) then layers don't help.

I've never turned up anywhere skimpily dressed and then moaned. I always dress warmly.

I don't have Raynauds, I'm not underweight, my thyroid is fine, the gp was completely uninterested in my wonky thermostat.

TheMythicalChicken · 12/06/2018 11:39

I really feel the cold. And I hate the attitude that you can just put on more clothes. That doesn't help your hands, or your face. I can remember trying to type with stiff hands from the cold and with blue lips, because the other people in the office had the attitude that you should 'just put a jumper on'. Grrr.

RedPony1 · 12/06/2018 11:43

But what do you expect people to do if they are sweating in minimal clothing, in temps you find chilly?

ParisUSM · 12/06/2018 11:44

I always used to be too cold in work, now that menopause has hit I am too hot and it is definitely far far worse to be too hot than to be too cold. I had to threaten to go to the union in order to get some heaters switched off, and I'm a lone worker!

LeighaJ · 12/06/2018 11:49

YANBU. This is not a majority rules situation, just put more clothes on if you're cold, SIMPLE.

My husband has to deal with the same in his office, he has to wear long sleeved professional shirts which get ruined fast because of all the whiney "I'm too cold." women he works with. Just put some GD clothes on. Angry

oblada · 12/06/2018 11:49

YABU because air con is the devil. Evil shit, makes my sinuses and my head ache. I can't stand it. Unless it's boiling/windows do not open there is no need for it. Use a desk fan. Open the window.
Even when we go to India I avoid using the air con if I can. It can't be that bad, come on.

Uyulala · 12/06/2018 11:50

It's not like the UK ever has really hot days anyway!

Speak for yourself. 20 degrees and above is too hot for me. It also depends on the type of heat though - Britain often gets muggy and oppressive heat, whereas dry heat is often more tolerable.

I sweat and get very very irritable in hot weather. I can't concentrate at all.

Uyulala · 12/06/2018 11:51

Opening the window only makes a difference if there's a breeze outside. If it's the same temp and no breeze, it's gonna make next to naff all difference. Agree on fans though.

Uyulala · 12/06/2018 11:52

It can't be that bad, come on.

Hmm I assure you it can. But, you know, just because I personally don't have any issues with Aircon, I'll say "Aircon can't be that bad, come on" Grin

ParisUSM · 12/06/2018 11:55

It can't be that bad, come on.

I thought that too before hot flushes hit! It's a different kind of heat, like being in a furnace.

MissCharleyP · 12/06/2018 11:56

Uyulala my dad is the same but I do wonder at the OP who said they never wear a coat? I don’t disbelieve them and obviously it’s up to them but that isn’t usual in a UK winter. This country is cold more than it’s hot and on the days when it does nudge above 20 or whatever, I don’t want to be sat in the equivalent of a fridge. It’s never a problem in other countries; we went to Vegas in October and while they cool indoor areas, you don’t get that freezing chill that people think is necessary here.
