To never lock my car doors?

violentendsdelight · 11/06/2018 17:44

My car has been broken into 3 times. All different places and it’s not a nice/flashy car at all.

I feel like just buying a steering wheel lock and then if people want to get into my car then they can just open the door and see there’s nothing in there to steal. At least I wouldn’t have to keep paying £70 for a new window each time.

Have you tried a camera pointing at your drive way

RoseanneBarred · 11/06/2018 17:45

I hear you op.

I wouldn't be brave enough though

LoniceraJaponica · 11/06/2018 17:47

Yes, because if it gets stolen the insurance company might not pay out.

How would they know?

It’s been broken into parked at different places. There was clear cctv of one incident and the police couldn’t care less.

Wouldn't the police be able to tell from the lack of visible signs of forced entry?

DuchyDuke · 11/06/2018 17:55

A locked car wouldn’t have as much damage to the door / windows.

MrsJacksonBrodieTheSecond · 11/06/2018 17:55

I never lock my car, it drives dh mad. There’s nothing in there and I think they’ll do less damage if they do try and break in.

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 11/06/2018 17:57

You need a clear CCTV camera inside your house pointing directly at your car (inside your house so the theirs can't rip it off the wall ) and you might be able to get some clear footage for the police of the scumbags who have done this...

Again it was broken into at multiple different locations. The police really don’t give a shit - I could say it was Mr X and here’s the footage ... the most the person would get is a caution.

My mum never used to lock her car. For years she had old cars and they were never broken into or stolen. I think it is luck in some ways. Doesn't sound like you have benefited from locking your car.

GrumpyOlderBloke · 11/06/2018 18:00

Perfectly sensible thing to do.
All my boys have Mazda MX-5 convertibles and never lock them. Scroats would simply slash the hood to steal any contents.

If parking in a dodgy area they also leave the glove compartment and centre console open to show there is nothing there.

They have however disconnected the lever that opens the boot lid from inside the car, so that it can only be opened from the outside with the key.
All 'valuables' including the radio fascia are locked away from sight in the boot. Nothing is left inside the cabin - not even a packet of tissues!

violentendsdelight · 11/06/2018 18:03

Never thought of leaving the glove compartment open too, thanks for that tip!

Where we are there is no crime, We hardly ever lock our cars or house.

The only time a car gets locked is if we leave a gun in there.

shockedballoon · 11/06/2018 18:09

My old car was a Fiat Panda and I left it unlocked on purpose. We didn't have a driveway and cars regularly got broken into on our street. Often I'd find the glove compartment open and signs if the car having been rifled through - but no broken window 😁

RubyLux · 11/06/2018 18:43

I never lock my car.

Theworldisfullofgs · 11/06/2018 18:45

My old was broken into once and I didn't realise until the police turned up.

toffee1000 · 11/06/2018 18:50

Thieves will nick anything though. We got a pair of glasses and a tin of travel sweets nicked once.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/06/2018 18:52

I always lock my car. Sadly, crime is rising where I live and the most reported crime is houses being broken into to steal car keys. None of the modern cars can be hot wired these days.

BigPinkBall · 11/06/2018 18:59

Someone I used to work with forgot to lock her car and when she went out in the morning there was a tramp sleeping in it, she said it stunk after that so she got rid of it!

NetballHoop · 11/06/2018 18:59

Not quite the same but my FIL left his car with the window part open and when he came back to it someone had shoved a half eaten kebab through onto the seats.

Some people are arses.

Firesuit · 11/06/2018 19:01

Sometimes in US TV fiction you will see someone who urgently needs a car simply try random car doors and find one unlocked with the keys inside. I used to think this was far-fetched, but more recently I've read there are towns in the USA where it is perfectly normal for people to leave their cars unlocked with their key in the ignition. Apparently this is considered safe, and doesn't even invalidate insurance. Shock

Firesuit · 11/06/2018 19:02

Not sure about the insurance part.

ilovewinterpansies · 11/06/2018 19:06

Don't lie to your insurance company. I'm not being pious - just highlighting that if they find out, they'll reject your claim and put you on a blacklist (fraud indicator).

I work in the industry - any dishonesty from claimants is treated very seriously, even if it's seemingly innocent and well meaning.

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 11/06/2018 19:19

Op I don't want to derail your thread, but if this is a regular occurrence and if the police won't do anything, why not get together with your neighbours and hire something like this for your area

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/nov/03/frinton-on-sea-cops-for-hire-compare-private-nhs

It might deter the crime and you would certainly feel a bit safer knowing someone was there
