To feel intimidated by expensive cars whilst driving?

A bit of a generalisation here but I often find BMW, Mercedes, Audi cars etc drive much faster than me...often tailgate me and overtake when I'm on Maxim speed limit.
I feel that a certain kind of go getting person has the money to buy such cars and this is a wflwcted in their driving. This makes no sense I know! I can't help feel intimidated when a beautiful BNW or Mercedes drives behind me. I gave a bimbly Honda jazz!/

While we are at it....it's never those bloody tail gaters who get caught speeding is it?!

only problem is, is the crafty camera wanker vans!

I think you will find it's the drivers that are the wankers Hmm

Would be interesting to see where it says in the Highway Code that all cars should travel at the speed limit.

MoonsAndJunes · 09/06/2018 09:35

If traffic comes ndotions allow.

I used to do a lot of motorway driving in a Micra and get tailgated or flashed at by these types. I think they see a slow car or woman driver and expect you to be in the way and feel justified to be aggressive (It was usually men).
When I upgraded to a flash car this behaviour reduced massively yet my driving hasn't changed. If anything I get let out more by other cars (probably because they think you won't dawdle being in a flash car).

When tailgaters appear I slow down or let them pass and become someone elses problem.
I was once on the tail end of a road rage incident where a man threatened to kill me because he wanted to overtake.

I don't play games on the road any more, I don't even use the horn - you just don't know who you are p!ssing off.

Welcomething no I definitely feel it's the vans

SymphonyofShadows · 09/06/2018 09:40

I've definitely noticed this. I have a very old but very much loved car that has low mileage and a beast of an engine. OH has a new and very expensive car. I get a far wider berth and fewer people trying to cut me up/overtake etc. in the new car, even though I have noticed that I drive it far more sedately as I don't really like it.

It doesn't. But neither did I say that it did.

I said using 'my mum is 70' and 'new newly qualified DD is 18' is not a reason to drive at 30mph in a 50mph zone. It is road conditions that dictate what speed you should travel (within the limit), not age. Driving too slowly, when unnecessary is an offence. It's called inconsiderate driving.

BMW, audi etc accelerate fairly quickly but they also have a lot of tech designed to prevent collisions and will break well. They may be tail gating out of a false sense of confidence. It may be helpful to ode tory the dick drivers. I wouldn't worry about really expensive cars because they are usually owned by older people who plod more than anything. But entry level BMWs and Audis are the worst. Minis included (little bastards). If you see something like that coming up behind you just move out of the way. Also be wary if taxi drivers and people driving aggressively in little cars. I was tailgated the other day by some crazy woman in one of those little plastic cars. I dive a huge BMW estate which accelerates fairly quickly, much quicker than her car at any rate. Anyway, she ended up going into the right hand lane at the traffic lights and then cutting into my lane in front of me. She was bloody lucky that I habitually holdback a little when accelerating. If u was the typical BMW driver bits of her car it'd have been all over the road.

VelvetSpoon · 09/06/2018 10:01

If you think you have a hard time in a Jazz, try driving a Daewoo Matiz.

I get tailgated a lot, as I have to stick rigidly to the speed limit due to our car being fitted with a telematics box (which keeps insurance for me and 19yo DS to £600. Which as we each have under 2 years driving experience is great). However I just ignore it and if they get too close, I either slow down, or briefly tap the brake. Both tend to make them back off.

The funniest thing is at traffic lights. My car is only a tiny old thing but it can accelerate up to 30 pretty quick (it just struggled beyond that) I often find other drivers - Men especially- assume they will beat me away from the lights and are surprised when that doesn't happen!

VelvetSpoon · 09/06/2018 10:06

The worst drivers round here are minicabs (usually Uber). And all the twats in massive SUVs, the more expensive the model the worse the driving. Discoverys, Q7s and Cayennes are about the worst.

chipiedog · 09/06/2018 10:06

I drove a BMW and yes most twatty drivers have them or Audi etc. I personally always drive under speed limit and leave a long gap in front of me. I've always driven normal cars until recently and I haven't changed my driving style .

chipiedog · 09/06/2018 10:06

Although I did notice the behaviour of other drivers towards me has changed since I am not driving a Peugeot convertible anymore and now I'm driving an x3

welcomething · 09/06/2018 10:07

BMW, audi etc accelerate fairly quickly but they also have a lot of tech designed to prevent collisions and will break well.

That's not really how it works. Acceleration is directly connected to engine size, not brand. Also some models will have all the tech, other models will be basic entry level. BRAKES are only as good as the maintenance, work pads on a BMW won't outperform decent pads on any other car.

Xenia · 09/06/2018 10:07

My old Saab is quite a big strong old beast so I don't get this too much but I never go over the speed limit and if people behind don't like that they will just have to put up with it!

Lethaldrizzle · 09/06/2018 10:09

There are lots of v impatient drivers on the road. Just leave more time for your journey and stop getting angry and driving aggressively.

MoonsAndJunes · 09/06/2018 10:10

welcomething :'It's called inconsiderate driving'

I' pretty sure that penalties for 'Driving without due care and attention' or 'without reasonable consideration for other road users' don't get issued to people driving below the speed limit unless they are causing a serious hazard.

DMCWelshCakes · 09/06/2018 10:13

I've driven many different cars over the years (owned & hired for business trips) & I've noticed a distinct difference in the way other drivers react to you depending on what youre driving.

In my anecdotal experience:
People are nice to Minis, Fiat 500s & Land Rover Defenders.
People are aggressive to Corsas, Jazzes & particularly Micras.
People view high end, high powered cars as a challenge & try to race you.

Wheretheresawill1 · 09/06/2018 10:16

Totally agree about the Audi drivers- they think they are sooo much more important

OrdinaryGirl · 09/06/2018 10:19

I thought it was just an accepted fact of life that if you were cut up or tailgated in a motorway it was pretty likely that it was going to be a white, male Audi / BMW / white van driver that had done it 🤷🏼‍♀️Confused
